Weekly Message: Who is this Jesus?

Ever notice how sometimes we miss the real reason for various events or celebrations?  Many times, we celebrate these events by getting together with friends and family, enjoy our time together, but miss the reason for the event.  Easter celebrations are usually celebrated by an egg hunt, jellybeans, and possibly some good food but more and more, these celebrations miss the whole reason for the event.  It’s not that having a good meal and spending time with family & friends is a bad thing, but sometimes we can totally miss the reason for the celebration. With Easter just a few days away, let’s remember together the greatest gift that God has ever given us.  The opportunity to be forgiven and spend eternity with the King of Kings.

Sometimes our local environment can shape our view of what is happening in the rest of the world.  Despite the fact that Christianity is shrinking in the United States, it is actually growing when we look at the world overall.  It is growing faster than the world’s overall population growth, with some of the most dramatic growth occurring in Asia and Africa.  What have we forgotten in our country that most of the world is captivated by? 

There are very few people now who would deny that Jesus was a real person who lived 2,000 years ago.  One of the first mentions of Jesus and his followers other than the bible was written by Flavius Josephus, a non-Christian who wrote about the history of Judaism.  He wrote “There was about this time Jesus, a wise man, if it be lawful to call him a man, for he was a doer of wonderful works—a teacher of such men as receive the truth with pleasure. He drew over to him both many of the Jews, and many of the Gentiles. He was Christ; and when Pilate, at the suggestion of the principal men amongst us, had condemned him to the cross, those that loved him at the first did not forsake him, for he appeared to them alive again the third day, as the divine prophets had foretold these and ten thousand other wonderful things concerning him; and the tribe of Christians, so named from him, are not extinct at this day.” There are many other historians that have written about Jesus, so I think most believe, including those who are not Christians, that Jesus was a real person. So, what did Jesus say and do that have so many believing that He is the Son of God?

I believe it starts with an understanding of Easter. If Jesus had been a good teacher and had died when he was crucified, Christianity would be more like many other religions in the world today. A leader established a profound way of speaking and teaching that attracted many followers.  The difference with Christianity is that Jesus was raised from the dead.  I think one of the best accounts of this concerned the Disciple Thomas.  “Now Thomas, one of the twelve, called the Twin, was not with them when Jesus came.  So the other disciples told him, “We have seen the Lord.” But he said to them, “Unless I see in his hands the mark of the nails, and place my finger into the mark of the nails, and place my hand into his side, I will never believe.”  Eight days later, his disciples were inside again, and Thomas was with them. Although the doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you.” Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here, and see my hands; and put out your hand, and place it in my side. Do not disbelieve, but believe.” Thomas answered him, “My Lord and my God!”  Jesus said to him, “Have you believed because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.” John 20:24-29.

Jesus spent 40 days on earth after the crucifixion and was seen by more than 500 people.  Jesus’ disciples were transformed from being fearful and hiding from authorities to dynamic followers who endured great persecution and ultimately gave up their lives sharing the story of Jesus.  So why should we believe in this good news? First, we have the written accounts in the bible. Second, we have sufficient proof that Jesus’ disciples committed their lives to sharing the good news of the gospel.  Who would give up their life for a lie?  Third, we have non-religious historians who have validated that Jesus lived, was a dynamic teacher and was crucified by the Romans.  Jesus’ resurrection from the dead explains the incredible growth in Christianity so soon after Jesus’ death especially when Jesus was considered a religious heretic by the Jewish leaders and a political traitor by the Romans. What more proof do we need to seriously consider that Jesus is the Son of God and to research and understand His teachings? I believe if we all were to take this next step in researching who Jesus is, that many would come to place their faith in Him. It is by our faith in Jesus that our sins are forgiven and that we may spend eternity in heaven with God. ¿Alguna vez has notado cómo a veces pasamos por alto el verdadero motivo de diversos eventos o celebraciones? Muchas veces celebramos estos eventos reuniéndonos con amigos y familiares, disfrutamos de nuestro tiempo juntos, pero perdemos el motivo del evento. Las celebraciones de Pascua generalmente se celebran con una búsqueda de huevos, gominolas y posiblemente algo de buena comida, pero cada vez más, estas celebraciones pierden el motivo del evento. No es que disfrutar de una buena comida y pasar tiempo con familiares y amigos sea algo malo, pero a veces podemos perder por completo el motivo de la celebración. A solo unos días de Pascua, recordemos juntos el regalo más grande que Dios nos ha dado jamás. La oportunidad de ser perdonado y pasar la eternidad con el Rey de Reyes.

A veces nuestro entorno local puede moldear nuestra visión de lo que sucede en el resto del mundo. A pesar de que el cristianismo está disminuyendo en los Estados Unidos, en realidad está creciendo cuando miramos al mundo en general. Está creciendo más rápido que el crecimiento demográfico general del mundo, y algunos de los crecimientos más espectaculares se producen en Asia y África. ¿Qué hemos olvidado en nuestro país que cautiva a la mayor parte del mundo?

Hay muy pocas personas ahora que negarían que Jesús fue una persona real que vivió hace 2.000 años. Una de las primeras menciones de Jesús y sus seguidores además de la Biblia fue escrita por Flavio Josefo, un no cristiano que escribió sobre la historia del judaísmo. Escribió: “Había por aquel tiempo Jesús, un hombre sabio, si es lícito llamarlo hombre, porque era hacedor de obras maravillosas, maestro de aquellos que reciben la verdad con agrado. Él era Cristo; y cuando Pilato, por sugerencia de los principales entre nosotros, lo condenó a la cruz, los que lo amaron al principio no lo abandonaron, porque se les apareció vivo nuevamente al tercer día, como lo habían predicho los divinos profetas. estas y diez mil otras cosas maravillosas acerca de él; y la tribu de cristianos, así llamada por él, no se ha extinguido hasta el día de hoy”. Hay muchos otros historiadores que han escrito sobre Jesús, así que creo que la mayoría cree, incluidos los que no son cristianos, que Jesús fue una persona real. Entonces, ¿qué dijo y hizo Jesús para que tantos crean que Él es el Hijo de Dios?

Creo que comienza con una comprensión de la Pascua. Si Jesús hubiera sido un buen maestro y hubiera muerto cuando fue crucificado, el cristianismo se parecería más a muchas otras religiones del mundo actual. Un líder estableció una manera profunda de hablar y enseñar que atrajo a muchos seguidores. La diferencia con el cristianismo es que Jesús resucitó de entre los muertos. Creo que uno de los mejores relatos de esto se refiere al discípulo Tomás. “Y Tomás, uno de los doce, llamado el Mellizo, no estaba con ellos cuando vino Jesús. Entonces los otros discípulos le dijeron: “Hemos visto al Señor”. Pero él les dijo: Si no veo en sus manos la marca de los clavos, y no meto mi dedo en el lugar de los clavos, y no meto mi mano en su costado, no creeré. Ocho días después, sus discípulos estaban nuevamente dentro, y Tomás estaba con ellos. Aunque las puertas estaban cerradas, Jesús se acercó y se puso en medio de ellos y les dijo: “La paz esté con vosotros”. Luego dijo a Tomás: “Pon aquí tu dedo y mira mis manos; y extiende tu mano, y métela en mi costado. No dejéis de creer, sino creed”. Tomás le respondió: “¡Señor mío y Dios mío!” Jesús le dijo: “¿Has creído porque me has visto? Bienaventurados los que no han visto y han creído”. Juan 20:24-29.

Jesús pasó 40 días en la tierra después de la crucifixión y fue visto por más de 500 personas. Los discípulos de Jesús pasaron de ser temerosos y esconderse de las autoridades a seguidores dinámicos que soportaron una gran persecución y finalmente entregaron sus vidas compartiendo la historia de Jesús. Entonces, ¿por qué deberíamos creer en estas buenas noticias? Primero, tenemos los relatos escritos en la Biblia. En segundo lugar, tenemos pruebas suficientes de que los discípulos de Jesús comprometieron sus vidas a compartir las buenas nuevas del evangelio. ¿Quién daría su vida por una mentira? En tercer lugar, tenemos historiadores no religiosos que han validado que Jesús vivió, fue un maestro dinámico y fue crucificado por los romanos. La resurrección de Jesús de entre los muertos explica el increíble crecimiento del cristianismo tan pronto después de la muerte de Jesús, especialmente cuando Jesús era considerado un hereje religioso por los líderes judíos y un traidor político por los romanos. ¿Qué más pruebas necesitamos para considerar seriamente que Jesús es el Hijo de Dios e investigar y comprender sus enseñanzas? Creo que si todos diéramos el siguiente paso para investigar quién es Jesús, muchos llegarían a poner su fe en Él.
