Weekly Message: What was Important to Jesus?

I hope you had some time to celebrate Easter with family & friends.  As we appreciate what God has done for us by forgiving our sins, Easter is also a good time for us to show our gratefulness by remembering and working to carry out some of the most important teachings that came from Jesus.

Jesus was a masterful teacher.  He knew the importance of solid doctrine (teaching) but was also extremely effective at setting and showing a good example.  Sometimes actions speak louder than words and beyond sacrificing his life so that we could be forgiven, Jesus gave us many examples to help us understand His teaching.  Jesus committed no sin, and was willing to live life as a human, so that His death would become payment for our sin.   ^“In this the love of God was made manifest among us, that God sent his only Son into the world, so that we might live through him.  In this is love, not that we have loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the propitiation (payment) for our sins. 1 John 4:9-10.  People mattered to Jesus.  The bible is full of stories that show that Jesus would work to the point of exhaustion teaching and healing those that were around him.  Jesus taught us that other people matter.  Of everything Jesus taught, He highlighted loving God and others as the most important thing we can do.  “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment.  And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself.  On these two commandments depend all the Law and the Prophets.” Matthew 22:37-40.

Jesus taught us that His followers put the needs of others before themselves.  Jesus gave us a great example of this when he washed the feet of His disciples.  “Now that I (Jesus), your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet.  I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you.  Very truly I tell you, no servant is greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him.  Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them.” John 13:14-16.  It’s not always easy to put the needs of others ahead of ourselves.  One of the many examples that Christ set for us was his attitude.  He put the needs of others ahead of His own.  I think this begins with us trying to picture ourselves in the same situation as others we encounter.  Our ability to do this leads to us having the capacity to be compassionate. Consider the needs of those around you. Try to put yourself in their situation and treat them as you would like to be treated.

Jesus told us that we are to forgive one another.  Not just once but many times. “Jesus said to him, “I do not say to you seven times, but seventy-seven times.” Matthew 18:22. Forgiveness is difficult.  I can’t imagine it being any more difficult than when Jesus asked God to forgive His executioners when He was hung on the cross.  Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.” Luke 23:34.   Sometimes our ability to forgive requires strength that can only come from God.  Loving others requires us to forgive just as God has forgiven us.

Finally, the primary reason Jesus came to earth and sacrificed His life was to help everyone understand that God has a plan for how we should live and offers forgiveness to us when we don’t get it right.  But that doesn’t mean we don’t have to try.  First, we need to understand the instructions He has given us in the Bible.  But sometimes the right choice is not obvious, and we need to pray for God’s help to make a good decision.  We live in a world that continues to prioritize many things ahead of our service to God.  Sometimes if we listen to others rather than the Bible, we can be led down a dark path that puts ourselves first and others at the end of the line.  Being a Christian is more than just going to church on Sunday, it is about applying the teachings of Jesus everywhere we go, and sharing the Good News of the Gospel with those that don’t know.  Here are a few activities you can incorporate into your routine that can help guide you to make better choices. 1) Spend a few minutes in prayer every day, 2) Make a commitment to read a small section of the bible each day, 3) Attend weekly services with other believers, 4) Pray for knowledge & wisdom, 5) Be generous, 6) Be thankful for God’s blessings.

¿ Espero que hayas tenido algo de tiempo para celebrar la Pascua con familiares y amigos. Mientras apreciamos lo que Dios ha hecho por nosotros al perdonar nuestros pecados, la Pascua también es un buen momento para mostrar nuestro agradecimiento recordando y trabajando para llevar a cabo algunas de las enseñanzas más importantes que vinieron de Jesús.

Jesús fue un maestro magistral. Conocía la importancia de una doctrina sólida (enseñanza), pero también era extremadamente eficaz a la hora de dar y mostrar un buen ejemplo. A veces las acciones hablan más que las palabras y más allá de sacrificar su vida para que podamos ser perdonados, Jesús nos dio muchos ejemplos para ayudarnos a comprender sus enseñanzas. Jesús no cometió ningún pecado y estuvo dispuesto a vivir la vida como ser humano, para que Su muerte fuera el pago por nuestro pecado. “En esto se manifestó el amor de Dios entre nosotros, en que Dios envió a su Hijo único al mundo, para que vivamos por él. En esto está el amor, no en que hayamos amado a Dios sino en que él nos amó y envió a su Hijo como propiciación (pago) por nuestros pecados. 1 Juan 4:9-10. La gente le importaba a Jesús. La Biblia está llena de historias que muestran que Jesús trabajaría hasta el agotamiento enseñando y sanando a quienes estaban a su alrededor. Jesús nos enseñó que otras personas importan. De todo lo que Jesús enseñó, destacó amar a Dios y a los demás como lo más importante que podemos hacer. “Amarás al Señor tu Dios con todo tu corazón y con toda tu alma y con toda tu mente. Este es el gran y primer mandamiento. Y el segundo es parecido: Amarás a tu prójimo como a ti mismo. De estos dos mandamientos dependen toda la Ley y los Profetas”. Mateo 22:37-40.

Jesús nos enseñó que sus seguidores anteponen las necesidades de los demás a las de ellos mismos. Jesús nos dio un gran ejemplo de esto cuando lavó los pies de sus discípulos. “Ahora que yo (Jesús), vuestro Señor y Maestro, os he lavado los pies, vosotros también debéis lavaros los pies unos a otros. Os he dado ejemplo para que hagáis lo mismo que yo he hecho por vosotros. En verdad os digo que ningún siervo es mayor que su señor, ni un mensajero es mayor que el que lo envió. Ahora que sabes estas cosas, serás bendecido si las haces”. Juan 13:14-16. No siempre es fácil anteponer las necesidades de los demás a las nuestras. Uno de los muchos ejemplos que Cristo nos dio fue su actitud. Puso las necesidades de los demás por delante de las suyas. Creo que esto comienza cuando intentamos imaginarnos a nosotros mismos en la misma situación que otros con los que nos encontramos. Nuestra capacidad para hacer esto nos lleva a tener la capacidad de ser compasivos. Considere las necesidades de quienes lo rodean. Intenta ponerte en su situación y trátalos como te gustaría que te trataran a ti.

Jesús nos dijo que debemos perdonarnos unos a otros. No sólo una vez sino muchas veces. “Jesús le dijo: “No te digo siete veces, sino setenta y siete veces”. Mateo 18:22. El perdón es difícil. No puedo imaginar que sea más difícil que cuando Jesús le pidió a Dios que perdonara a sus verdugos cuando lo colgaron en la cruz. Jesús dijo: “Padre, perdónalos porque no saben lo que hacen”. Lucas 23:34. A veces nuestra capacidad de perdonar requiere una fuerza que sólo puede venir de Dios. Amar a los demás requiere que perdonemos tal como Dios nos ha perdonado.

Finalmente, la razón principal por la que Jesús vino a la tierra y sacrificó su vida fue para ayudar a todos a comprender que Dios tiene un plan sobre cómo debemos vivir y nos ofrece perdón cuando no lo hacemos bien. Pero eso no significa que no tengamos que intentarlo. Primero, debemos entender las instrucciones que Él nos ha dado en la Biblia. Pero a veces la elección correcta no es obvia y necesitamos orar pidiendo la ayuda de Dios para tomar una buena decisión. Vivimos en un mundo que continúa priorizando muchas cosas por delante de nuestro servicio a Dios. A veces, si escuchamos a los demás en lugar de la Biblia, podemos ser conducidos por un camino oscuro que nos pone a nosotros mismos en primer lugar y a los demás al final de la línea. Ser cristiano es más que simplemente ir a la iglesia el domingo, se trata de aplicar las enseñanzas de Jesús dondequiera que vayamos y compartir las Buenas Nuevas del Evangelio con aquellos que no lo saben. Aquí hay algunas actividades que puede incorporar a su rutina y que pueden ayudarlo a tomar mejores decisiones. 1) Pase unos minutos en oración todos los días, 2) Comprométase a leer una pequeña sección de la Biblia cada día, 3) Atienda a los servicios semanales con otros creyentes, 4) Ore por conocimiento y sabiduría, 5) Sea generoso, 6 ) Sea agradecido por las bendiciones de Dios.
