Weekly Message: Learning from the Disciples

I have spent many years in business and one of the activities I have benefited from is looking at successful leaders and implementing some of their strategies.  Good leaders are successful at communicating ideas, leveraging the best of people, and aligning their teams to deliver on a product or service.  Good leaders and high-quality teams have been critical in some of the major advancements in the human race. Even a great idea requires the skills and talents of many for it to move from a thought to a well implemented solution.  From placing the first man on the moon to the incredible advances in medicine we have today, most of our significant accomplishments required people working together to make it happen.

After a night of praying on a mountain, Jesus called His followers together and chose 12 to serve as disciples.  You can find them listed in Matthew 10:2-4. I think it is clear from reading the bible that many of these men didn’t fully understand what being a disciple of Jesus was all about.  The Israelites had been under Roman captivity for hundreds of years before Jesus was born.  The Romans assessed heavy taxes, disrespected, and subjected the Jewish people to harsh treatment.  Though the Romans were in ultimate control of the society, they did not interfere much with religious matters.  Through the miracles that Jesus performed, there were many who began to believe that Jesus could be the promised Messiah. But they failed to interpret the prophesies in the bible correctly and expected Him to overthrow the government.  Rather than creating an earthly ruling kingdom today and set things right politically, Jesus came to sacrifice His life for the sins of all who would believe in Him.

The initial reaction of the disciples to the death of Jesus was fear and great concern.  The only disciple that was present at the cross was the Apostle John.  There is no doubt that something miraculous happened after Jesus was crucified.  The initial reactions of the disciples show us that even though they had been told that Jesus would be crucified, that event scrambled the followers into hiding.  They were deeply grief stricken and couldn’t match up the events that transpired with what they thought would happen.  But despite their initial confusion and fear, each of the disciples was transformed into advocates for the faith.  First, they were able to interact with and talk to Jesus after He was raised from the dead. Jesus spent 40 days talking to and interacting with his followers and they ultimately came to understand that Jesus had to die and be raised from the dead, so that all who believe would be forgiven.  Second, the disciples were filled with the Holy Spirit.  “And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever, even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and will be in you.” John 14:16-17.

The disciples all went on to commit their lives to preaching the good news of the gospel, and demonstrated amazing courage and faith facing all those that opposed who Jesus was and what he taught.  King Herod was so opposed to this new religion, that he commanded that apostle James be put to death.  The Apostle Andrew was killed on an x-shaped cross in Greece after evangelizing the local council’s wife.  The Apostle Phillip was an evangelist and dedicated his life to preaching in Asia-Minor and was killed by crucifixion.  Despite some conflicting accounts, the Apostle Nathaniel was likely crucified for his faithful preaching of the gospel. The Apostle Thomas was a missionary in Syria and was also killed for preaching about Jesus.  Simon was killed at an older age through crucifixion.  The apostle Thaddeus was a great missionary who evangelized different parts of the Roman empire and was also put to death for his beliefs.  Matthew the tax collector was killed in Ethiopia by a sword.  The Apostle James was a preacher in the parts of Egypt and was crucified there.  Peter was killed in Rome by the Roman leader Nero and requested that he be crucified upside down so as not to be killed in the same way as Jesus.  The Apostle John was the last of Jesus Apostles, authored the book of Revelations and ultimately died of old age. 

These men that were so fearful of the Romans, went on to preach about Jesus in bold ways, most of them sacrificing their lives so that many would know about the good news of Jesus.  So why would these men be willing to sacrifice their lives?  It was because they met with, lived with, and walked with the resurrected Jesus.

He pasado muchos años en el negocio y una de las actividades de las que me he beneficiado es observar a líderes exitosos e implementar algunas de sus estrategias. Los buenos líderes tienen éxito en comunicar ideas, aprovechar lo mejor de las personas y alinear a sus equipos para entregar un producto o servicio. Buenos líderes y equipos de alta calidad han sido fundamentales en algunos de los principales avances de la raza humana. Incluso una gran idea requiere las habilidades y talentos de muchos para pasar de una idea a una solución bien implementada. Desde colocar al primer hombre en la luna hasta los increíbles avances en medicina que tenemos hoy, la mayoría de nuestros logros importantes requirieron que las personas trabajaran juntas para hacerlo realidad.

Después de una noche de oración en una montaña, Jesús reunió a sus seguidores y eligió a 12 para que sirvieran como discípulos. Puede encontrarlos enumerados en Mateo 10:2-4. Creo que al leer la Biblia queda claro que muchos de estos hombres no entendían completamente de qué se trataba ser un discípulo de Jesús. Los israelitas habían estado bajo cautiverio romano durante cientos de años antes de que naciera Jesús. Los romanos impusieron fuertes impuestos, faltaron el respeto y sometieron al pueblo judío a un trato severo. Aunque los romanos tenían el control final de la sociedad, no interfirieron mucho en los asuntos religiosos. A través de los milagros que Jesús realizó, fueron muchos los que comenzaron a creer que Jesús podría ser el Mesías prometido. Pero no interpretaron correctamente las profecías de la Biblia y esperaban que Él derrocara al gobierno. En lugar de crear un reino terrenal gobernante hoy y arreglar las cosas políticamente, Jesús vino a sacrificar Su vida por los pecados de todos los que creen en Él.

La reacción inicial de los discípulos ante la muerte de Jesús fue de miedo y gran preocupación. El único discípulo que estuvo presente en la cruz fue el apóstol Juan. No hay duda de que algo milagroso sucedió después de que Jesús fue crucificado. Las reacciones iniciales de los discípulos nos muestran que a pesar de que les habían dicho que Jesús sería crucificado, ese evento hizo que los seguidores se escondieran. Estaban profundamente afligidos y no podían relacionar los acontecimientos que sucedieron con lo que pensaban que sucedería. Pero a pesar de su confusión y miedo iniciales, cada uno de los discípulos se transformó en defensores de la fe. Primero, pudieron interactuar y hablar con Jesús después de que resucitó de entre los muertos. Jesús pasó 40 días hablando e interactuando con sus seguidores y finalmente llegaron a comprender que Jesús tenía que morir y resucitar de entre los muertos, para que todos los que creyeran fueran perdonados. Segundo, los discípulos fueron llenos del Espíritu Santo. “Y yo pediré al Padre, y él os dará otro Consolador, para que esté con vosotros para siempre, el Espíritu de verdad, a quien el mundo no puede recibir, porque no lo ve ni lo conoce. Vosotros lo conocéis, porque él habita con vosotros y estará en vosotros”. Juan 14:16-17.

Todos los discípulos continuaron comprometiendo sus vidas a predicar las buenas nuevas del evangelio y demostraron un valor y una fe asombrosos frente a todos aquellos que se oponían a quién era Jesús y lo que enseñaba. El rey Herodes se oponía tanto a esta nueva religión que ordenó que se diera muerte al apóstol Santiago. El apóstol Andrés fue asesinado en una cruz en forma de X en Grecia después de evangelizar a la esposa del consejo local. El apóstol Felipe fue evangelista y dedicó su vida a predicar en Asia Menor y fue asesinado por crucifixión. A pesar de algunos relatos contradictorios, el apóstol Natanael probablemente fue crucificado por su fiel predicación del evangelio. El apóstol Tomás fue misionero en Siria y también fue asesinado por predicar sobre Jesús. Simón fue asesinado a una edad avanzada mediante la crucifixión. El apóstol Tadeo fue un gran misionero que evangelizó diferentes partes del imperio romano y también fue ejecutado por sus creencias. Mateo, el recaudador de impuestos, fue asesinado a espada en Etiopía. El apóstol Santiago fue predicador en algunas partes de Egipto y fue crucificado allí. Pedro fue asesinado en Roma por el líder romano Nerón y pidió que lo crucificaran cabeza abajo para no ser asesinado de la misma manera que Jesús. El apóstol Juan fue el último de los apóstoles de Jesús, escribió el libro del Apocalipsis y finalmente murió de vejez.

Estos hombres que tenían tanto miedo de los romanos continuaron predicando acerca de Jesús de manera audaz, la mayoría de ellos sacrificando sus vidas para que muchos conocieran las buenas nuevas de Jesús. Entonces, ¿por qué estarían estos hombres dispuestos a sacrificar sus vidas?
