Weekly Message: Not Everyone

Jesus was an amazing teacher. He took the time to live and work with His followers so they could learn not only from His words, but also from His actions.  Some of Jesus’ words were hard to hear and seemed to conflict with what the Jewish leaders taught and believed.  One of Jesus’ more difficult teachings concerned those people who would not be welcomed into heaven by God. “On that day many will say to me, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and cast out demons in your name, and do many mighty works in your name?’  And then will I declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from me, you workers of lawlessness.” Matthew 7:22-23. So why would someone who prophesy, cast out demons and do mighty works in the name of Jesus, not be welcomed into heaven? Are these works not reflective of someone who believes in Jesus?  Why would Jesus say that they were workers of lawlessness?

Before Jesus said these words, He was sharing a warning about false prophets.  These individuals may say that they are Christians, and display many signs that they are believers, but not truly belong to God.  Some reasons could be that they were seeking to be righteous on their own through their service or they were seeking the favor of men rather than the favor of God.  They may have thought that they were saved by their works rather than being saved through their faith.  So how do we know if we are true believers, and how do we determine if those around us are true followers of Christ?  Of the many things that Jesus taught on, our love for God and one another should be at the top of our list.  “A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another.  By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.” John 13:34-35. So, what does Christian love look like?  First, it is rooted in the cross.  “By this we know love, that he laid down his life for us, and we ought to lay down our lives for the brothers.” 1 John 3:16.  Christ sacrificed His life so that we could be forgiven.  We are justified, accepted. loved and forgiven by God because of Jesus.  Christian love is shaped by the Holy Spirit, and it overcomes fear, greed and selfishness by directing our hearts and minds to the truth of God’s commands and promises. “Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. 1 Corinthians 13:4-7.

The bible tells us that the world is full of false Christians.  Scripture tells us that the way that we know that someone is a Christian is by the condition of their heart.  “For I will take you from among the nations, gather you out of all countries, and bring you into your own land.  Then I will sprinkle clean water on you, and you shall be clean; I will cleanse you from all your filthiness and from all your idols.  I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; I will take the heart of stone out of your flesh and give you a heart of flesh. I will put My Spirit within you and cause you to walk in My statutes, and you will keep My judgments and do them. Then you shall dwell in the land that I gave to your fathers; you shall be My people, and I will be your God.” Ezekiel 36:24-28.  When we become a believer in Jesus, God gives us a new heart, one that has His designs on it.  We are transformed from the inside out into a new person whose heart is dedicated to loving and serving God.

Our new life should demonstrate the gifts of God’s love…love, peace, gentleness and goodness, faith, meekness and self-control. The evidence of a transformed heart is love.  If we are a believer in Jesus, we should desire to bring glory to God rather than ourselves.  Jesus was glorified on the cross when he brought redemption to all who would believe in Him, and the sacrifice He made so that believers could be forgiven.  Loving others can be difficult but God has given us the ability to do it with the help of the Holy Spirit.

So how is human love different then the love that comes from God? As people we say we “love” many things like a new car, a sport or a fun activity.  God’s love is far deeper than something we like or a superficial emotion.  God’s love is a commitment that seeks what is best for us.  Human love can be temporary, or based in self-interest, where the love of God is unshakable and forever. We get a sense of the depth of His love for us by reading the words of Paul.  “Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth.  Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never ends. 1 Corinthians 13:4-8.  May we who believe in Jesus love others with the kind of love that passes all understanding.

Jesús fue un maestro increíble. Se tomó el tiempo para vivir y trabajar con Sus seguidores para que pudieran aprender no sólo de Sus palabras, sino también de Sus acciones. Algunas de las palabras de Jesús fueron difíciles de escuchar y parecían entrar en conflicto con lo que los líderes judíos enseñaban y creían. Una de las enseñanzas más difíciles de Jesús se refería a aquellas personas que Dios no recibiría en el cielo. “Aquel día muchos me dirán: ‘Señor, Señor, ¿no profetizamos en tu nombre, y en tu nombre expulsamos demonios, y en tu nombre hicimos muchos milagros?’ Nunca os conocí; apartaos de mí, hacedores de maldad”. Mateo 7:22-23. Entonces, ¿por qué alguien que profetiza, expulsa demonios y hace milagros en el nombre de Jesús no sería bienvenido en el cielo? ¿Estas obras no reflejan a alguien que cree en Jesús? ¿Por qué diría Jesús que eran hacedores de maldad?

Antes de que Jesús dijera estas palabras, estaba compartiendo una advertencia sobre los falsos profetas. Estos individuos pueden decir que son cristianos y mostrar muchas señales de que son creyentes, pero no pertenecen verdaderamente a Dios. Algunas razones podrían ser que buscaban ser justos por sí mismos a través de su servicio o que buscaban el favor de los hombres en lugar del favor de Dios. Es posible que hayan pensado que fueron salvos por sus obras en lugar de ser salvos por su fe. Entonces, ¿cómo sabemos si somos verdaderos creyentes y cómo determinamos si quienes nos rodean son verdaderos seguidores de Cristo? De las muchas cosas que Jesús enseñó, nuestro amor por Dios y por los demás debería estar en la parte superior de nuestra lista. “Un mandamiento nuevo os doy: que os améis unos a otros: como yo os he amado, también os améis unos a otros. En esto conocerán todos que sois mis discípulos, si os amáis unos a otros”. Juan 13:34-35. Entonces, ¿cómo es el amor cristiano? Primero, tiene sus raíces en la cruz. “En esto conocemos el amor, en que él dio su vida por nosotros, y nosotros debemos dar la nuestra por los hermanos”. 1 Juan 3:16. Cristo sacrificó su vida para que pudiéramos ser perdonados. Estamos justificados, aceptados. amado y perdonado por Dios gracias a Jesús. El amor cristiano está moldeado por el Espíritu Santo y supera el miedo, la codicia y el egoísmo al dirigir nuestros corazones y mentes a la verdad de los mandamientos y promesas de Dios. “El amor es paciente y amable; el amor no tiene envidia ni se jacta; no es arrogante ni grosero. No insiste en su propio camino; no está irritable ni resentido; no se alegra de la maldad, sino que se alegra de la verdad. El amor todo lo soporta, todo lo cree, todo lo espera, todo lo soporta. 1 Corintios 13:4-7.

La biblia nos dice que el mundo está lleno de falsos cristianos. Las Escrituras nos dicen que la forma en que sabemos que alguien es cristiano es por la condición de su corazón. “Porque os tomaré de entre las naciones, os reuniré de todos los países y os traeré a vuestra propia tierra. Entonces os rociaré con agua limpia y seréis limpios; Yo os limpiaré de todas vuestras inmundicias y de todos vuestros ídolos. Os daré un corazón nuevo y pondré un espíritu nuevo dentro de vosotros; Quitaré de vuestra carne el corazón de piedra y os daré un corazón de carne. Pondré mi Espíritu dentro de vosotros y haré que andéis en mis estatutos, y guardaréis mis juicios y los cumpliréis. Entonces habitaréis en la tierra que di a vuestros padres; vosotros seréis mi pueblo y yo seré vuestro Dios”. Ezequiel 36:24-28. Cuando nos convertimos en creyentes en Jesús, Dios nos da un corazón nuevo, uno que tiene Sus designios. Somos transformados de adentro hacia afuera en una nueva persona cuyo corazón está dedicado a amar y servir a Dios.

Nuestra nueva vida debe demostrar los dones del amor de Dios… amor, paz, gentileza y bondad, fe, mansedumbre y dominio propio. La evidencia de un corazón transformado es el amor. Si somos creyentes en Jesús, debemos desear darle gloria a Dios en lugar de a nosotros mismos. Jesús fue glorificado en la cruz cuando trajo la redención a todos los que creyeran en Él, y el sacrificio que hizo para que los creyentes pudieran ser perdonados. Amar a los demás puede ser difícil pero Dios nos ha dado la capacidad de hacerlo con la ayuda del Espíritu Santo.

Entonces, ¿en qué se diferencia el amor humano del amor que viene de Dios? Como personas decimos que “amamos” muchas cosas como un auto nuevo, un deporte o una actividad divertida. El amor de Dios es mucho más profundo que algo que nos gusta o una emoción superficial. El amor de Dios es un compromiso que busca lo mejor para nosotros. El amor humano puede ser temporal o basado en el interés propio, donde el amor de Dios es inquebrantable y para siempre. Tenemos una idea de la profundidad de su amor por nosotros al leer las palabras de Pablo. “El amor es paciente y amable; el amor no tiene envidia ni se jacta; no es arrogante ni grosero. No insiste en su propio camino; no está irritable ni resentido; no se alegra de la maldad, sino que se alegra de la verdad. El amor todo lo soporta, todo lo cree, todo lo espera, todo lo soporta. El amor nunca termina.” 1 Corintios 13:4-8. Que nosotros, los que creemos en Jesús, amemos a los demás con la clase de amor que sobrepasa todo entendimiento.
