Weekly Message: Righteousness

Over the past several weeks we have been discussing character traits that please God. This week we will turn our focus to the quality of righteousness which is mentioned more than 300 times in both the old and new testaments. Dictionary.com defines with word righteousness to mean: acting in accord with divine or moral law : free from guilt or sin. I am sure we are all familiar with the term self-righteous. Being self-righteous means a reliance upon self for determining what is right and wrong. But righteousness in the bible is God’s determination of what is right or wrong. We live in a world today that is consistently moving away from God’s definition and is re-writing what is good or moral. The bible warns us against this tendency to define our own right and wrongs when it says, “There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way to death.” Proverbs 14:12. In today’s message we will look at what the bible has to say about righteousness and why it is important for us to pursue God’s standards.

The Sermon on the Mount was given by Jesus early in his ministry and is one of the longest sermons recorded in the bible. There were likely several thousand in attendance and the purpose of his message was to tell his disciples what it meant to follow him. Jesus taught about salvation, prayer, justice, helping the poor, and the character attributes that are valued by God. In this sermon, Jesus said “For I tell you, unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.” Matthew 5:20. Here Jesus is telling us that our righteousness is linked to whether or not we will be welcomed into heaven. The scribes and the Pharisees were the most religious people of the time. They spent their time studying and adhering to Jewish law. Exceeding their righteousness was a very high bar. So high in fact, it is not something we can do on our own.

I talk with a lot of people that say they believe that if the good you do out balances the bad, then you will go to heaven. A survey conducted in 2020 of self-identified Christians indicated that 52% believed that only good deeds were necessary to be accepted by God and enter heaven. In that same survey, only 56% said that they avoid sinning because they know that it offends God. These views are dramatically different than what we are told in the bible. So does our righteousness matter? Why do more and more Christians believe that it is only good works that matter, or that sin won’t affect whether we will be accepted by God? The only conclusion I can come to is that there are many that don’t know what the bible says.

The Apostle Paul writing to the Roman church explains in vivid detail our condition before God. “None is righteous, no, not one; no one understands; no one seeks for God. All have turned aside; together they have become worthless; no one does good, not even one.” Romans 3:10-12. Why would Paul say that no one does good? It is because the standard is so high. God is perfect and holy, and we are not. Compared to God’s righteousness, even our best efforts fall well short. We cannot do enough good things because the standard is perfection and as humans, we are imperfect and make mistakes. This may seem very depressing and lead us to the conclusion that we are doomed and will never enter heaven. But God knows we can’t meet His standard. That is why he sent Jesus. “He (God) made Him (Jesus) who knew no sin to be sin in our behalf, so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.” 2 Corinthians 5:21.

“Because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart, one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved. For the Scripture says, “Everyone who believes in him will not be put to shame.” For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek; for the same Lord is Lord of all, bestowing his riches on all who call on him. For “everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.” Romans 10:9-13. When we believe in Jesus, his righteousness is given to us! Our entrance into heaven is secured when we place our faith in Jesus. It is not about good deeds; it is about faith. As followers of Christ, we are given the Holy Spirit to help us live a God honoring life (pursuing righteousness & doing good deeds).  For there is no distinction: for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,  and are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, whom God put forward as a propitiation by his blood, to be received by faith.” Romans 3:22. I encourage you to spend some time in the bible this week and decide for yourself what you believe.

Durante las últimas semanas hemos estado discutiendo los rasgos de carácter que agradan a Dios. Esta semana nos centraremos en la cualidad de la justicia que se menciona más de 300 veces tanto en el Antiguo como en el Nuevo Testamento. Dictionary.com define con la palabra justicia el significado de actuar de acuerdo con la ley divina o moral: libre de culpa o pecado. Estoy seguro de que todos estamos familiarizados con el término moralista. Ser moralista significa confiar en uno mismo para determinar lo que está bien y lo que está mal. Pero la justicia en la Biblia es la determinación de Dios de lo que está bien o mal. Vivimos en un mundo actual que constantemente se aleja de la definición de Dios y reescribe lo que es bueno o moral. La Biblia nos advierte contra esta tendencia a definir nuestros propios buenos y malos cuando dice: “Hay un camino que al hombre le parece derecho, pero su fin es camino de muerte”. Proverbios 14:12. En el mensaje de hoy veremos lo que la Biblia tiene que decir acerca de la justicia y por qué es importante para nosotros seguir las normas de Dios.

El Sermón del Monte fue pronunciado por Jesús al comienzo de su ministerio y es uno de los sermones más largos registrados en la Biblia. Probablemente asistieron varios miles y el propósito de su mensaje era decirles a sus discípulos lo que significaba seguirlo. Jesús enseñó sobre la salvación, la oración, la justicia, la ayuda a los pobres y los atributos de carácter que Dios valora. En este sermón, Jesús dijo: “Porque os digo que a menos que vuestra justicia sea mayor que la de los escribas y fariseos, no entraréis en el reino de los cielos”. Mateo 5:20. Aquí Jesús nos dice que nuestra justicia está relacionada con si seremos bienvenidos o no al cielo. Los escribas y fariseos eran el pueblo más religioso de la época. Pasaron su tiempo estudiando y adhiriéndose a la ley judía. Superar su rectitud era un listón muy alto. De hecho, es tan alto que no es algo que podamos hacer por nuestra cuenta.

Hablo con mucha gente que dice creer que si el bien que haces compensa el mal, entonces irás al cielo. Una encuesta realizada en 2020 entre cristianos autoidentificados indicó que el 52% creía que solo eran necesarias buenas obras para ser aceptado por Dios y entrar al cielo. En esa misma encuesta, sólo el 56% dijo que evita pecar porque sabe que ofende a Dios. Estos puntos de vista son dramáticamente diferentes de lo que nos dice la Biblia. Entonces, ¿importa nuestra justicia? ¿Por qué cada vez más cristianos creen que lo único que importa son las buenas obras, o que el pecado no afectará si seremos aceptados por Dios? La única conclusión a la que puedo llegar es que hay muchos que no saben lo que dice la biblia.

El apóstol Pablo, escribiendo a la iglesia romana, explica con vívidos detalles nuestra condición ante Dios. “Ninguno es justo, ni aun uno; nadie entiende; nadie busca a Dios. Todos se han desviado; juntos se han vuelto inútiles; nadie hace el bien, ni siquiera uno”. Romanos 3:10-12. ¿Por qué diría Pablo que nadie hace el bien? Es porque el estándar es muy alto. Dios es perfecto y santo, y nosotros no. Comparados con la justicia de Dios, incluso nuestros mejores esfuerzos se quedan cortos. No podemos hacer suficientes cosas buenas porque el estándar es la perfección y, como seres humanos, somos imperfectos y cometemos errores. Esto puede parecer muy deprimente y llevarnos a la conclusión de que estamos condenados y nunca entraremos al cielo. Pero Dios sabe que no podemos cumplir con Su estándar. Por eso envió a Jesús. “Él (Dios) al que no conoció pecado, por nosotros lo hizo pecado, para que nosotros fuésemos hechos justicia de Dios en él”. 2 Corintios 5:21.

“Porque si confiesas con tu boca que Jesús es el Señor y crees en tu corazón que Dios lo resucitó de entre los muertos, serás salvo. Porque con el corazón se cree y se justifica, y con la boca se confiesa y se salva. Porque dice la Escritura: Todo el que crea en él, no será avergonzado. Porque no hay distinción entre judío y griego; porque el mismo Señor es Señor de todos, otorgando sus riquezas a todos los que lo invocan. Porque “todo aquel que invoque el nombre del Señor será salvo”. Romanos 10:9-13. Cuando creemos en Jesús, ¡su justicia nos es dada! Nuestra entrada al cielo está asegurada cuando ponemos nuestra fe en Jesús. No se trata de buenas obras; se trata de fe. Como seguidores de Cristo, recibimos el Espíritu Santo para ayudarnos a vivir una vida que honre a Dios (buscando la justicia y haciendo buenas obras). Porque no hay distinción: por cuanto todos pecaron y están destituidos de la gloria de Dios, y son justificados gratuitamente por su gracia, mediante la redención que es en Cristo Jesús, a quien Dios presentó como propiciación con su sangre, para ser recibido por la fe”. Romanos 3:22. Te animo a que dediques algo de tiempo a la Biblia esta semana y decidas por ti mismo lo que crees.
