Weekly Message: Be Prepared

Last week we started to look more closely at the time period that leads us up to Easter known as Lent. This period of time is a good opportunity for us to evaluate our life against the teachings of Jesus and decide where we should consider making some changes.  Jesus used parables, stories about His biblical truths as a way to help others understand his teachings.  Parables take familiar, easy to understand experiences and use them to illustrate deeper spiritual truths.  Today’s message is called “Be Prepared.”  Some of you may recognize that phrase from Scouting.  The Boy Scout Motto was used to help scouts realize that we are responsible to be prepared for the things in life that will come our way.  Today we will take a closer look at Jesus’ teachings of the wise and foolish virgins that needed to be ready.

“Then the kingdom of heaven will be like ten virgins who took their lamps and went to meet the bridegroom.  Five of them were foolish, and five were wise.  For when the foolish took their lamps, they took no oil with them, but the wise took flasks of oil with their lamps.  As the bridegroom was delayed, they all became drowsy and slept.  But at midnight there was a cry, ‘Here is the bridegroom! Come out to meet him.’ Then all those virgins rose and trimmed their lamps.  And the foolish said to the wise, ‘Give us some of your oil, for our lamps are going out.’ But the wise answered, saying, ‘Since there will not be enough for us and for you, go rather to the dealers and buy for yourselves.’  And while they were going to buy, the bridegroom came, and those who were ready went in with him to the marriage feast, and the door was shut.  Afterward the other virgins came also, saying, ‘Lord, lord, open to us.’  But he answered, ‘Truly, I say to you, I do not know you.’  Watch therefore, for you know neither the day nor the hour.” Matthew 25:1-13.

On the surface, the story tells of a wedding procession and a bridegroom that is coming for the wedding event.  The deeper meaning behind the story is foretelling of the significant event of Jesus’ return.  In this story, there are two groups of people, those who believe and have prepared and those that have not.  The five wise virgins represent those individuals who believe, have prepared, and are ready for the groom’s return.  Not only do they have faith in the bride groom (Jesus), but they also prepared by filling their lives with good works. The unprepared virgins on the other hand represent those that did not prepare.  When the bridegroom arrives unexpectedly, the unprepared virgins realize their lack of oil and scramble to obtain some.  While they are away the bridegroom returns and by the time the virgins are prepared, the bridegroom has left.  The difficult message to the unprepared virgins is that they can’t rely on others to be prepared. They did not prepare and will not be with the bridegroom (God).

This parable emphasizes that we are to live our lives dedicated to faith & good works.  We do not know the day or the hour of Jesus’ return, but His call to us for faith and service is consistent.  Each day we have the opportunity to make good choices, to live a life that is pleasing to God.  So what does faith and service look like?  Jesus gave us great insight into this question when he was asked “what are God’s most important commandments?”  He responded ^“And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’ The second is this: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no other commandment greater than these.” Mark 12:30-31.  So how can we live a life that is marked by these qualities?

Loving God means knowing his law and doing the best we can to live by it. As we learn more about God through reading his word, the bible, we are then prepared to ask Him to help us live a life that is pleasing to Him.  With the help of the Holy Spirit, we can work towards eliminating sin from our life and focus our efforts towards loving and serving others.  Just as the prepared virgins focused their efforts on serving the bridegroom, we can serve others by sharing the good news of Jesus, helping others that are in need, and establishing our priorities based on what is important to God.  My prayer for each of you is that when you meet the Lord you will hear from His lips “well done, good & faithful servant.” Matthew 25:23.

​ La semana pasada comenzamos a mirar más de cerca el período que nos lleva a la Pascua conocido como Cuaresma. Este período de tiempo es una buena oportunidad para que evalúemos nuestra vida frente a las enseñanzas de Jesús y decidamos dónde debemos considerar hacer algunos cambios. Jesús usó parábolas, historias sobre sus verdades bíblicas, como una manera de ayudar a otros a comprender sus enseñanzas. Las parábolas toman experiencias familiares y fáciles de entender y las utilizan para ilustrar verdades espirituales más profundas. El mensaje de hoy se llama “Estén preparados”. Algunos de ustedes tal vez reconozcan esa frase del Movimiento Scout. El lema de Boy Scout se utilizó para ayudar a los exploradores a darse cuenta de que somos responsables de estar preparados para las cosas que se nos presentarán en la vida. Hoy echaremos un vistazo más de cerca a las enseñanzas de Jesús sobre las vírgenes prudentes y las insensatas que necesitaban estar preparadas.

“Entonces el reino de los cielos será como diez vírgenes que tomando sus lámparas y fueron al encuentro del esposo. Cinco de ellos eran tontos, y cinco eran sabios. Porque cuando las insensatas tomaron sus lámparas, no llevaron aceite consigo, pero las prudentes llevaron alforjas de aceite con sus lámparas. Como el novio se demoraba, todas tuvieron sueño y se durmieron. Pero a medianoche se oyó un grito: ‘¡Aquí está el novio! Salid a recibirlo. Entonces todas aquellas vírgenes se levantaron y arreglaron sus lámparas. Y las insensatas dijeron a las prudentes: “Dadnos un poco de vuestro aceite, porque nuestras lámparas se apagan.” Pero las prudentes respondieron, diciendo: “Ya que no habrá suficiente para nosotras y para vosotras, id más bien a los comerciantes y Comprad vosotros.» Y mientras iban a comprar, vino el novio, y las que estaban preparadas entraron con él a la fiesta de bodas, y se cerró la puerta. Después vinieron también las otras vírgenes, diciendo: “Señor, señor, ábrenos.” Pero él respondió: “En verdad os digo que no os conozco.” Velad, pues, porque no sabéis ni el día ni la hora. .” Mateo 25:1-13.

En la superficie, la historia habla de una procesión nupcial y de un novio que viene para el evento nupcial. El significado más profundo detrás de la historia es la predicción del importante acontecimiento del regreso de Jesús. En esta historia hay dos grupos de personas, los que creen y se han preparado y los que no. Las cinco vírgenes prudentes representan a aquellas personas que creen, se han preparado y están listas para el regreso del novio. No sólo tienen fe en el novio (Jesús), sino que también se prepararon llenando sus vidas de buenas obras. Las vírgenes no preparadas, por otro lado, representan aquellas que no se prepararon. Cuando el novio llega inesperadamente, las vírgenes desprevenidas se dan cuenta de la falta de aceite y se apresuran a conseguirlo. Mientras están fuera, el novio regresa y cuando las vírgenes están preparadas, el novio ya se ha ido. El mensaje difícil para las vírgenes que no están preparadas es que no pueden confiar en que otros estén preparados. No se prepararon ni estarán con el novio (Dios).

Esta parábola enfatiza que debemos vivir nuestras vidas dedicadas a la fe y las buenas obras. No sabemos el día ni la hora del regreso de Jesús, pero su llamado a la fe y al servicio es constante. Cada día tenemos la oportunidad de tomar buenas decisiones, de vivir una vida que agrade a Dios. Entonces, ¿cómo son la fe y el servicio? Jesús nos dio una gran comprensión de esta pregunta cuando le preguntaron “¿cuáles son los mandamientos más importantes de Dios?” Él respondió: “Y amarás al Señor tu Dios con todo tu corazón y con toda tu alma y con toda tu mente y con todas tus fuerzas”. El segundo es este: “Amarás a tu prójimo como a ti mismo”. otro mandamiento mayor que estos”. Marcos 12:30-31. Entonces, ¿cómo podemos vivir una vida marcada por estas cualidades?

Amar a Dios significa conocer su ley y hacer lo mejor que podamos para vivir según ella. A medida que aprendemos más acerca de Dios mediante la lectura de su palabra, la Biblia, estamos preparados para pedirle que nos ayude a vivir una vida que le agrade. Con la ayuda del Espíritu Santo, podemos trabajar para eliminar el pecado de nuestra vida y centrar nuestros esfuerzos en amar y servir a los demás. Así como las vírgenes preparadas centraron sus esfuerzos en servir al novio, nosotros podemos servir a los demás compartiendo las buenas nuevas de Jesús, ayudando a los necesitados y estableciendo nuestras prioridades basadas en lo que es importante para Dios. Mi oración por cada uno de ustedes es que cuando se encuentren con el Señor escuchen de Sus labios “bien hecho, buen siervo y fiel”. Mateo 25:23.
