Weekly Message: Why is There So much Evil in the World?

One of the questions I hear from people regularly is why is there evil in the world or why does God allow evil to exist? Does God cause evil? If God is a good God, why does he allow bad things to happen? How does God’s sovereignty and human will relate to each other? Evil certainly does exist in our world. Human history is full of evil people doing bad things. We also see bad things occurring that are not necessarily caused by people. Hurricanes, earthquakes, tornados and disease cause human pain and suffering and are not caused by people, they are referred to as acts of nature. Does God cause all of this to happen? These are big questions that could take pages to discuss fully, but I’ll try to address them briefly this week.
God is holy and righteous and is not the source of evil, but he does allow it due to the evil choices made by people. Adam and Eve disobeyed God in the garden of Eden and brought upon themselves and all of creation a curse from God. Here is the curse as recorded in Genesis 3. To the woman he said, “I will surely multiply your pain in childbearing; in pain you shall bring forth children. Your desire shall be contrary to your husband, but he shall rule over you.” And to Adam he said, “Because you have listened to the voice of your wife and have eaten of the tree of which I commanded you, You shall not eat of it, cursed is the ground because of you; in pain you shall eat of it all the days of your life; thorns and thistles it shall bring forth for you; and you shall eat the plants of the field. By the sweat of your face you shall eat bread, till you return to the ground, for out of it you were taken; for you are dust, and to dust you shall return.” God’s curse was not only to man and woman, it was also to the rest of creation.
The “acts of nature” we witness in the world, are a direct result of this curse. With the curse also came death which had never existed up to this point. We are told by Paul that the creation groans for the day that all will be made right. “For the creation waits with eager longing for the revealing of the sons of God. For the creation was subjected to futility, not willingly, but because of him who subjected it, in hope that the creation itself will be set free from its bondage to corruption and obtain the freedom of the glory of the children of God.” Romans 8:19-22.
The bible is full of commentary about the self-centeredness and sinfulness of man. Jesus spoke of this directly when he said “For from within, out of the heart of man, come evil thoughts, sexual immorality, theft, murder, adultery, coveting, wickedness, deceit, sensuality, envy, slander, pride, foolishness. All these evil things come from within, and they defile a person.” Mark 7:21-23. Paul goes on to say that no one seeks God. “The Lord looks down from heaven on the children of man, to see if there are any who understand, who seek after God. They have all turned aside; together they have become corrupt; there is none who does good, not even one.” Psalm 14:2-3.
God gave humans the ability to make choices both good and bad. Given the evil nature of humans, it is no wonder that we experience evil in this world. With all this discussion of evil and bad things that happen in the world, it is easy to become discouraged. But God’s plan will be accomplished despite the bad choices of people here on earth. God in his sovereignty has the capacity to work through the wicked choices of his creatures to bring about his sovereign will. The bible is full of stories where despite the wickedness of man, God accomplishes his purposes. God has made a way for those who believe to be forgiven, and to spend eternity with him. “But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God, who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God.” “For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope.” Jeremiah 29:11.
We are made right with God when we believe that Jesus sacrificed His life to pay the penalty for our sin. “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because they have not believed in the name of God’s one and only Son.” Join us for the faith discussion group at 9am or 4:15pm if you would like to learn more.

Mensaje ¿Por qué hay tanta maldad en el mundo?

Una de las preguntas que escucho con frecuencia es: ¿por qué existe el mal en el mundo o por qué Dios permite que exista? ¿Acaso Dios causa el mal? Si Dios es bueno, ¿por qué permite que ocurran cosas malas? ¿Cómo se relacionan la soberanía de Dios y la voluntad humana? El mal ciertamente existe en nuestro mundo. La historia de la humanidad está llena de personas malvadas que hacen cosas malas. También vemos que ocurren cosas malas que no necesariamente son causadas por las personas. Huracanes, terremotos, tornados y enfermedades causan dolor y sufrimiento humano y no son causados por las personas; se les conoce como fenómenos naturales. ¿Acaso Dios causa todo esto? Estas son preguntas importantes que podrían tomar páginas para analizarlas a fondo, pero intentaré abordarlas brevemente esta semana.
Dios es santo y justo y no es la fuente del mal, pero lo permite debido a las malas decisiones de las personas.
Adán y Eva desobedecieron a Dios en el jardín del Edén y atrajeron sobre sí mismos y sobre toda la creación una maldición divina. Aquí está la maldición registrada en Génesis 3. A la mujer le dijo: «Multiplicaré considerablemente tus dolores en el parto; con dolor darás a luz los hijos. Tu deseo será contrario al de tu marido, pero él se enseñoreará de ti». Y a Adán le dijo: «Por cuanto has escuchado la voz de tu mujer y has comido del árbol del cual te mandé: «No comerás de él», maldita será la tierra por tu culpa; con dolor comerás de ella todos los días de tu vida; espinos y cardos te producirá, y comerás plantas del campo. Con el sudor de tu rostro comerás el pan hasta que vuelvas a la tierra, porque de ella fuiste tomado; pues polvo eres, y al polvo volverás». La maldición de Dios no solo afectó al hombre y a la mujer, sino también al resto de la creación. Los actos de la naturaleza que presenciamos en el mundo son resultado directo de esta maldición. Con la maldición también vino la muerte, que hasta entonces no había existido. Pablo nos dice que la creación gime ansiosamente por el día en que todo será arreglado. “Porque la creación aguarda con anhelo ardiente la manifestación de los hijos de Dios. Porque la creación fue sujetada a vanidad, no por su propia voluntad, sino por causa de aquel que la sujetó, con la esperanza de que la creación misma será liberada de la esclavitud de la corrupción y alcanzará la libertad de la gloria de los hijos de Dios.” Romanos 8:19-22.
La Biblia está llena de comentarios sobre el egocentrismo y la pecaminosidad del hombre. Jesús habló de esto directamente cuando dijo: “Porque de dentro, del corazón del hombre, salen los malos pensamientos, la inmoralidad sexual, el robo, el homicidio, el adulterio, la codicia, la maldad, el engaño, la sensualidad, la envidia, la calumnia, la soberbia, la necedad. Todas estas maldades salen de dentro y contaminan al hombre.” Marcos 7:21-23. Pablo continúa diciendo que nadie busca a Dios. “El Señor mira desde los cielos a los hijos de los hombres, para ver si hay alguien que entienda, que busque a Dios. Todos se han desviado, a una se han corrompido; no hay quien haga lo bueno, ni siquiera uno.” Salmo 14:2-3.
Dios dio a los humanos la capacidad de tomar decisiones buenas y malas. Dada la naturaleza malvada de los humanos, no es de extrañar que experimentemos el mal en este mundo.
Con toda esta discusión sobre el mal y las cosas malas que suceden en el mundo, es fácil desanimarse. Pero el plan de Dios se cumplirá a pesar de las malas decisiones de las personas aquí en la tierra. Dios, en su soberanía, tiene la capacidad de obrar a través de las malas decisiones de sus criaturas para hacer realidad su voluntad soberana. La Biblia está llena de historias donde, a pesar de la maldad del hombre, Dios cumple sus propósitos. Dios ha abierto un camino para que quienes creen sean perdonados y pasen la eternidad con él. Pero a todos los que le recibieron, a los que creen en su nombre, les dio potestad de ser hechos hijos de Dios; los cuales no nacieron de sangre, ni de voluntad de carne, ni de voluntad de varón, sino de Dios. Porque yo sé los planes que tengo para vosotros —declara el Señor—, planes de bienestar y no de mal, para daros un futuro y una esperanza. Jeremías 29:11.
Somos justificados ante Dios cuando creemos que Jesús sacrificó su vida para pagar la pena por nuestro pecado. Porque de tal manera amó Dios al mundo, que ha dado a su Hijo unigénito, para que todo aquel que en él cree, no se pierda, mas tenga vida eterna. Porque Dios no envió a su Hijo al mundo para condenar al mundo, sino para salvar al mundo por medio de él. El que en él cree, no es condenado; pero el que no cree, ya está condenado, porque no ha creído en el nombre del Hijo unigénito de Dios.
