Weekly Message: The Promises of God

Life can be hard at times. It is easy to get discouraged when we face struggles, challenges, health issues, lose a job or worse yet lose someone who is close to us. It is in these times that I find great comfort in reminding myself of God’s promises. The Bible, God’s Word, is full of promises to his followers. The stories of the Old Testament chronical the lives of people just like you and me, and over and over again describe the faithfulness of our God.
Peace can be an elusive state of mind and being. Many people I talk with, especially here in the Keys came here to find peace. In the midst of challenging circumstances, it is nearly impossible on our own to feel at peace. Yet God not only promises us peace, but an all-encompassing peace that passes all human understanding. “Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4:6-7. We can be confident that no matter how challenging life can be, we are promised God’s peace if we ask and keep our hearts and minds focused on him.
It is easy to feel alone and discouraged when life is difficult. The bible tells us that our God loves us and will never leave us and never forsake us. “It is the Lord who goes before you. He will be with you; he will not leave you or forsake you. Do not fear or be dismayed.” Deuteronomy 31:8. “No man shall be able to stand before you all the days of your life. Just as I was with Moses, so I will be with you. I will not leave you or forsake you.” Joshua 1:5. Both of these verses come from the bible story of God leading the Jewish people out of Egypt and into the promised land. Many times during their journey, the hardships and trials made the Jewish people want to give up. But their leaders reminded them that God goes before them and will never leave them, and we should not give up because with God, all things are possible. So, when you feel alone and discouraged, be reminded that you are never alone, God is with you.
God also promises us his help and protection. “Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” Isaiah 41:10. “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear though the earth gives way, though the mountains be moved into the heart of the sea” Psalm 46:1-2. Sometimes the situations we face seem insurmountable. God does not promise us a life without trials, but he does promise that he will help us. When I am reminded that God will help me and strengthen me, whatever I am facing doesn’t seem so impossible.
God also promises us his provision. My favorite bible verse about his provision is found in Matthew chapter 6.
“Therefore do not be anxious, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For the Gentiles seek after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them all. But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.” Matthew 6:31-33. We are promised that God will provide for our needs provided that we seek first His Kingdom and His righteousness. “And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4:19.
Finally, God promises us his forgiveness. Too often we find that poor decisions lead to difficult consequences that sometimes leave us feeling alone and guilty. “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” Romans 3:23. But God knows that we are human and made a way for us to be completely forgiven for anything and everything we have done or not done as we should. “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” 1 John 1:9. Jesus paid the price by giving his life, and taking on the penalty of our sin. May these promises of God come to mind the next time you are feeling down. We serve an all-powerful God who is faithful to keep every promise he has made!

La vida puede ser difícil a veces. Es fácil desanimarse cuando enfrentamos dificultades, desafíos, problemas de salud, perdemos un trabajo o, peor aún, perdemos a un ser querido. Es en estos momentos que encuentro gran consuelo al recordar las promesas de Dios. La Biblia, la Palabra de Dios, está llena de promesas para sus seguidores. Las historias del Antiguo Testamento narran la vida de personas como tú y como yo, y describen una y otra vez la fidelidad de nuestro Dios.
La paz puede ser un estado mental y del ser difícil de alcanzar. Muchas personas con las que hablo, especialmente aquí en los Cayos, vinieron aquí para encontrar paz. En medio de circunstancias difíciles, es casi imposible sentir paz por nuestra cuenta. Sin embargo, Dios no solo nos promete paz, sino una paz que lo abarca todo, que sobrepasa todo entendimiento humano. No se inquieten por nada; más bien, en toda ocasión, mediante oración y ruego, con acción de gracias, presenten sus peticiones a Dios. Y la paz de Dios, que sobrepasa todo entendimiento, guardará sus corazones y sus pensamientos en Cristo Jesús. Filipenses 4:6-7. Podemos estar seguros de que, sin importar cuán desafiante sea la vida, Dios nos promete la paz si la pedimos y mantenemos nuestros corazones y mentes enfocados en él.
Es fácil sentirse solo y desanimado cuando la vida es difícil. La Biblia nos dice que nuestro Dios nos ama y nunca nos dejará ni nos abandonará. «El Señor va delante de ti. Él estará contigo; no te dejará ni te abandonará. No temas ni desmayes.» Deuteronomio 31:8. «Nadie podrá hacerte frente en todos los días de tu vida. Así como estuve con Moisés, estaré contigo. No te dejaré ni te abandonaré.» Josué 1:5. Ambos versículos provienen de la historia bíblica de cómo Dios guió al pueblo judío fuera de Egipto hacia la tierra prometida. Muchas veces durante su viaje, las dificultades y las pruebas hicieron que el pueblo judío quisiera rendirse. Pero sus líderes les recordaron que Dios va delante de ellos y nunca los abandonará, y que no debemos rendirnos porque con Dios, todo es posible. Así que, cuando te sientas solo y desanimado, recuerda que nunca estás solo, Dios está contigo.
Dios también nos promete su ayuda y protección. «No temas, porque yo estoy contigo; no desmayes, porque yo soy tu Dios; te fortaleceré, te ayudaré, te sostendré con la diestra de mi justicia» (Isaías 41:10). «Dios es nuestro amparo y fortaleza, nuestro pronto auxilio en los momentos de angustia. Por tanto, no temeremos aunque la tierra se desmorone, ni aunque los montes se trasladen al corazón del mar» (Salmo 46:1-2). A veces, las situaciones que enfrentamos parecen insuperables. Dios no nos promete una vida sin pruebas, pero sí promete que nos ayudará. Cuando recuerdo que Dios me ayudará y me fortalecerá, cualquier cosa que esté enfrentando no parece tan imposible.
Dios también nos promete su provisión. Mi versículo bíblico favorito sobre su provisión se encuentra en Mateo capítulo 6:
“Por tanto, no se preocupen, diciendo: ‘¿Qué comeremos?’ o ‘¿Qué beberemos?’ o ‘¿Con qué nos vestiremos?’ Porque los gentiles buscan todas estas cosas, y su Padre celestial sabe que tienen necesidad de todas ellas. Mas busquen primeramente el reino de Dios y su justicia, y todas estas cosas les serán añadidas.” Mateo 6:31-33. Se nos promete que Dios proveerá para nuestras necesidades, siempre que busquemos primero su reino y su justicia. “Y mi Dios, pues, suplirá todo lo que les falte conforme a sus riquezas en gloria en Cristo Jesús.” Filipenses 4:19.
Finalmente, Dios nos promete su perdón. Con demasiada frecuencia descubrimos que las malas decisiones traen consecuencias difíciles que a veces nos hacen sentir solos y culpables. «Por cuanto todos pecaron y están destituidos de la gloria de Dios» (Romanos 3:23). Pero Dios sabe que somos humanos y nos ha dado el camino para que recibamos el perdón completo por todo lo que hayamos hecho o no, según nuestro deber. «Si confesamos nuestros pecados, él es fiel y justo para perdonarnos nuestros pecados y limpiarnos de toda maldad» (1 Juan 1:9). Jesús pagó el precio al dar su vida y asumir la pena de nuestro pecado. Que estas promesas de Dios te vengan a la mente la próxima vez que te sientas deprimido. ¡Servimos a un Dios todopoderoso que es fiel en cumplir cada promesa que ha hecho!
