Weekly Message: The Gift of God’s Word

Did you know that there are more than 450 different versions of the bible in the English language? The entire Bible has been translated into more than 700 languages, and parts of it have been translated into over 3,000 languages. Some languages have only one translation of the Bible, while others have many. The Old Testament bible was originally written in Hebrew while the New Testament was written in Greek and Aramaic. While some versions paraphrase the content, many convey the meaning and intent of the original text, prioritizing readability and clarity in English. My favorite versions are the English Standard version and the New American Standard version. If you have a mobile phone or tablet, you can download the YouVersion bible app and download many of the versions that are available.
So why should we believe in the bible? Many archaeological discoveries align with biblical accounts, including ancient cities, rulers, and events. Despite being written by numerous authors from diverse backgrounds over many centuries, the Bible maintains a remarkably unified and consistent message, which believers see as evidence of divine (authored by God) inspiration. Non-Christian writers of the time, such as Josephus, Tacitus, and Pliny the Younger, mention Jesus and early Christians, supporting the historical accuracy of the biblical narrative. Finally, some of the most impactful evidence is the personal change and transformation that takes place in people’s lives as a result of engaging with the Bible’s teachings.
So what should we expect if we spend time reading God’s word? I believe that there are 4 major reasons we should read the bible. First, the bible is God’s message of love, salvation, and purpose for His people. Without reading it, we miss much of how God desires to communicate with us personally and intimately. The Bible isn’t just a book; it’s God speaking directly to His children. Second, the bible should guide our decisions. We live in a “Me” focused world where money and power are most important. Every day we have choices to make; ethical, moral, or personal. Knowing the bible will allow us to align our choices with God’s values and His will. Third the bible will help us to live lives that are honorable to God. “For the word of God is living and active and sharper than any two-edged sword, and piercing as far as the division of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart.” Hebrews 4:12. Finally, knowing God’s word will fuel our faith and help us to serve and share the good news of the gospel with others.
So what steps can we take to make the time needed to read and study God’s word? With anything new in our life, we need to identify practical steps just like anything else we decide to take on. First ,we need to decide what version of the bible to read. The easiest way to do that is to go to the website biblegateway.com. There are 63 different translations of the bible to choose from. Here are two different versions of the same verse: “Don’t change yourselves to be like the people of this world, but let God change you inside with a new way of thinking. Then you will be able to understand and accept what God wants for you. You will be able to know what is good and pleasing to him and what is perfect.” Romans 12:2 (ERV) “And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect.” Romans 12:2 (NASB) Choose a version that is easy for you to read and understand.
Next set aside a time to read the bible. Start small, even five or ten minutes a day is impactful, and you can increase the time as you get more comfortable reading what God has to say. Sometimes a reading plan can help you by structuring what verses to read and when. The YouVersion bible app has hundreds of reading plans and studies you can choose from. Some of my favorites were developed by John Piper. Before each time you read, pray and ask God to open your heart and help you understand what He has to say. Finally, take a few minutes to ponder what you read and ask yourself the following questions: 1) What is the author trying to say and what does it reveal about God’s character, nature and actions? 2) How do these verses apply to me? Does it inspire me, convict me to make changes, or expose areas of sin or weakness in my life? 3) What actions or changes is God calling me to make in my life? Are there principles or truths I can hold on to? 4) Are there things I need to pray about and ask God for wisdom so I can better understand what God wants me to know or do? I am confident that if we spend time in God’s word, He will meet us there and help us to know all He has for us.

¿Sabías que existen más de 450 versiones diferentes de la Biblia en inglés? La Biblia completa se ha traducido a más de 700 idiomas, y partes de ella a más de 3000. Algunos idiomas solo tienen una traducción, mientras que otros tienen muchas. El Antiguo Testamento se escribió originalmente en hebreo, mientras que el Nuevo Testamento se escribió en griego y arameo. Si bien algunas versiones parafrasean el contenido, muchas transmiten el significado y la intención del texto original, priorizando la legibilidad y la claridad en inglés. Vivimos en un mundo centrado en el “yo”, donde el dinero y el poder son lo más importante. Cada día tomamos decisiones: éticas, morales o personales. Conocer la Biblia nos permitirá alinear nuestras decisiones con los valores de Dios y su voluntad. En tercer lugar, la Biblia nos ayudará a vivir vidas que honren a Dios. «Porque la palabra de Dios es viva y eficaz, y más cortante que toda espada de dos filos; y penetra hasta partir el alma y el espíritu, las coyunturas y los tuétanos, y discierne los pensamientos y las intenciones del corazón» (Hebreos 4:12). Finalmente, conocer la palabra de Dios alimentará nuestra fe y nos ayudará a servir y compartir las buenas nuevas del evangelio con los demás.
Entonces, ¿qué pasos podemos dar para dedicar el tiempo necesario a leer y estudiar la palabra de Dios? Ante cualquier novedad en nuestra vida, necesitamos identificar pasos prácticos, al igual que con cualquier otra cosa que decidamos emprender. Primero, debemos decidir qué versión de la Biblia leer. Estoy seguro de que si dedicamos tiempo a la palabra de Dios, Él nos encontrará allí y nos ayudará a comprender todo lo que tiene para nosotros.
