Weekly Message: The Armor of God

Is it hard to believe in something you can’t see, feel and touch? Generally, I think the answer is yes, it is. We use our senses to help us understand the world we live in and if we can’t see it, it is easy to believe that it is not there. We do however, believe in things we can’t see. We can’t see the wind but can observe its effects on the waves and plan our days on the water around the direction and speed of the wind. We can’t see the UV rays of the sun, but we know to wear sunscreen so that we don’t get burned by them. We can’t see, feel, or touch the cellular radio waves that allow our mobile phones to communicate with the cell towers, yet we believe that they exist because we can call, text and chat with our friends. The spiritual world is a lot like these things that exist, but can’t be seen, or touched. For those of us that believe in God, we know that they are there.
The Apostle Paul was the author of much of the New Testament Bible. Before he came to believe in Jesus, he was one of the officials that put Christians to death. His “spiritual” experience was dramatic! While on his way to Damascus, a voice from heaven called to him and said “Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting me?” Paul went on to establish churches throughout the Mediterranean and author some of the most insightful teaching of the bible. In one of his letters to the church at Ephesus he wrote “For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. Therefore, take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm.” Ephesians 6:12-13. What are these spiritual forces that Paul is talking about?
For those of us with faith in God, we believe that there is a spiritual battle going on between good and evil. This spiritual battle is not visible to us, but it can affect us, and we see evidence of it in our world today. The Apostle Paul refers to this battle and encourages us to put on the full armor of God. When the letter to the Ephesians was written, armor was critical to the warrior of the day. Without it, a soldier would not last long in battle when the arrows were flying, swords were swinging, and rocks were hurling. Paul goes on to say that we should put on the full armor of God so that we can be protected from the spiritual battle that is raging all around us. So, what are the components of this armor that will protect us?
Paul starts with “Stand therefore, having fastened on the belt of truth.” The belt in those days was a critical piece of armor. It protected the soldier’s very vulnerable mid-section from a fatal blow. Deception is the enemy’s most potent attack in the lies that he tells us about life and ourselves. These lies tell us that that materialism, money, power, pleasure and the things I want are the most important things in life or they tell us that we are worthless, sinful and not worthy of forgiveness and that God is not real. Knowing the truth that is revealed in God’s word enables us to discern the truth from a lie, live life by that truth and neutralize the lies of the enemy.
Paul then tells us to “put on the breastplate of righteousness.” The breastplate protected the heart and lungs of the warrior. A severe injury to this part of the body would be fatal. The understanding that our righteousness only comes from the Lord protects our heart from becoming puffed up with pride. It is only through the sacrifice that Jesus made on the cross that I am righteous, not anything that I have done. If the enemy can convince us that we can earn our righteousness or that we will never be righteous, then we live as though our salvation is up to us and we will miss the free gift of grace that comes from God.
Shoes were a very important part of the soldier’s armor. Many times, the enemy would scatter barbed spikes or sharp stones to slow the soldier down. “As shoes for your feet, having put on the readiness given by the gospel of peace.” God has given us the good news of the Gospel to share with others reminding us that it is by grace that we have been forgiven.

Mensaje seminal: La armadura de Dios

¿Es difícil creer en algo que no se puede ver, sentir ni tocar? En general, creo que sí. Usamos nuestros sentidos para comprender el mundo en el que vivimos, y si no podemos verlo, es fácil creer que no existe. Sin embargo, creemos en cosas que no podemos ver. No podemos ver el viento, pero sí observar sus efectos en las olas y planificar nuestros días en el agua en función de su dirección y velocidad. No podemos ver los rayos UV del sol, pero sabemos que debemos usar protector solar para no quemarnos. No podemos ver, sentir ni tocar las ondas de radio que permiten que nuestros teléfonos móviles se comuniquen con las torres de telefonía móvil, pero creemos que existen porque podemos llamar, enviar mensajes de texto y chatear con nuestros amigos. El mundo espiritual se parece mucho a estas cosas que existen, pero no se pueden ver ni tocar. Quienes creemos en Dios sabemos que existen.
El apóstol Pablo fue el autor de gran parte del Nuevo Testamento. Antes de creer en Jesús, fue uno de los funcionarios que condenaban a muerte a los cristianos. ¡Su experiencia espiritual fue dramática! De camino a Damasco, una voz del cielo lo llamó y le dijo: «Saulo, Saulo, ¿por qué me persigues?». Pablo estableció iglesias por todo el Mediterráneo y escribió algunas de las enseñanzas más profundas de la Biblia. En una de sus cartas a la iglesia de Éfeso, escribió: «Porque no tenemos lucha contra sangre y carne, sino contra principados, contra potestades, contra los poderes cósmicos de las tinieblas presentes, contra huestes espirituales de maldad en las regiones celestes. Por tanto, tomen toda la armadura de Dios, para que puedan resistir en el día malo, y habiendo acabado todo, mantenerse firmes». Efesios 6:12-13. ¿A qué fuerzas espirituales se refiere Pablo?
Quienes tenemos fe en Dios creemos que se libra una batalla espiritual entre el bien y el mal. Esta batalla espiritual no es visible para nosotros, pero puede afectarnos, y vemos evidencia de ella en nuestro mundo actual. El apóstol Pablo se refiere a esta batalla y nos anima a revestirnos de toda la armadura de Dios. Cuando se escribió la carta a los Efesios, la armadura era fundamental para el guerrero de la época. Sin ella, un soldado no duraría mucho en la batalla, cuando las flechas volaban, las espadas se blandían y las rocas se lanzaban. Pablo continúa diciendo que debemos revestirnos de toda la armadura de Dios para estar protegidos de la batalla espiritual que se desata a nuestro alrededor. Entonces, ¿cuáles son los componentes de esta armadura que nos protegerá?
Pablo comienza diciendo: «Estad firmes, ceñidos con el cinturón de la verdad». En aquellos días, el cinturón era una pieza fundamental de la armadura. Protegía la vulnerable cintura del soldado de un golpe fatal. El engaño es el ataque más poderoso del enemigo mediante las mentiras que nos dice sobre la vida y sobre nosotros mismos. Estas mentiras nos dicen que el materialismo, el dinero, el poder, el placer y las cosas que deseamos son lo más importante en la vida, o nos dicen que somos inútiles, pecadores e indignos de perdón, y que Dios no es real. Conocer la verdad revelada en la palabra de Dios nos permite discernir la verdad de la mentira, vivir según esa verdad y neutralizar las mentiras del enemigo.
Pablo nos dice entonces que nos vistamos con la coraza de justicia. La coraza protegía el corazón y los pulmones del guerrero. Una lesión grave en esta parte del cuerpo sería fatal. Comprender que nuestra justicia solo proviene del Señor protege nuestro corazón de enorgullecerse. Solo a través del sacrificio que Jesús hizo en la cruz soy justo, no por nada que yo haya hecho. Si el enemigo nos convence de que podemos ganar nuestra justicia o de que nunca seremos justos, vivimos como si nuestra salvación dependiera de nosotros y perdemos el don gratuito de la gracia que viene de Dios.
El calzado era una parte muy importante de la armadura del soldado. Muchas veces, el enemigo esparcía púas o piedras afiladas para frenarlo. «Calzad vuestros pies, revestidos del apresto del evangelio de la paz».
Dios nos ha dado la buena nueva del Evangelio para compartirla con otros, recordándonos que es por gracia que hemos sido perdonados.
