Weekly Message: Renewing our Minds

Our country and our community have sure had some challenges over the past few years. We have just been through a presidential election, inflation has made everything we buy more expensive, and living here in the Keys is becoming more difficult as the cost of living makes it hard for us to provide for our families. From the loss of loved ones to the difficulties finding enough work, it continues to be challenging for all of us. Trials and challenges are not new to God’s people. Generations before us have been through difficult times from the Jews and their exile and captivity in Egypt to the first Christian church talked about in the book of Acts, God’s people have not had it easy. But despite their circumstances, they have left us a legacy of faithfulness. How is that possible? How can we rise above the challenging circumstances that surround us to live a life of faithfulness and positive impact?
The Apostle Paul was one of the most influential leaders of the early church and the author of most of the letters that make up the New Testament Bible. Before his conversion, Paul was one of the biggest persecutors of Christians but after Jesus appeared to him, Paul became one of the most prolific missionaries bringing the good news of Christ throughout the Roman empire. It is in these letters he wrote to the New Testament churches, that we find some of the keys to living a life that is faithful. Paul writes “For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit. For to set the mind on the flesh is death, but to set the mind on the Spirit is life and peace. For the mind that is set on the flesh is hostile to God, for it does not submit to God’s law; indeed, it cannot. Those who are in the flesh cannot please God.” Romans 8:5-8. Paul tells us here that if we keep our minds focused on the things of this world then we will not be able to follow God’s commands. Paul continues “Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.” Romans 12:2.
Renewing our mind and keeping our perspective fixed on the kingdom of God seems like an impossible task especially during difficult times, but Paul also tells us that once we turn from our sin and place our faith in Jesus, we are filled with the Holy Spirit who amongst many other things, enables us to understand and obey the commands of God. “In him you also, when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and believed in him, were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit, who is the guarantee of our inheritance until we acquire possession of it, to the praise of his glory.” Ephesians 1:13-14.
So, what are these things of the flesh and the things of the Spirit that Paul is talking about? I believe that things of “the flesh” refers to self-centeredness, focusing on one’s own desires without thinking of others, the denial of the existence of God and as such the unwillingness to obey his commands. Paul speaks about things of the Spirit, in his letter to the Colossians when he says, “Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth.” Colossians 3:2. Setting our mind to think about God, his Kingdom, his expectations and what he has done for us, and our eternal home in heaven are ways that we focus on things that are above. Reading the bible and prayer are also good ways to keep our mind focused on the things of God. Paul also tells us that as the Holy Spirit enables us to focus on the things of God, it also produces in us these amazing qualities “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.” Galatians 5:22-23.
Throughout history, I believe that the people of God have been able to remain faithful despite the hard things they have had to endure by the power of the Holy Spirit, and by keeping the proper perspective, focusing on the things that are above, rather than on the circumstances of their current situation. I pray that God will reveal himself to you, that you may be filled with the Holy Spirit, and you may be found faithful during these challenging times.

Nuestro país y nuestra comunidad han enfrentado desafíos en los últimos años. Acabamos de pasar por unas elecciones presidenciales, la inflación ha encarecido todo lo que compramos y vivir aquí en los Cayos se está volviendo más difícil, ya que el costo de vida nos dificulta mantener a nuestras familias. Desde la pérdida de seres queridos hasta las dificultades para encontrar trabajo suficiente, sigue siendo un desafío para todos. Las pruebas y los desafíos no son nuevos para el pueblo de Dios. Generaciones anteriores a nosotros han pasado por momentos difíciles, desde los judíos y su exilio y cautiverio en Egipto hasta la primera iglesia cristiana de la que se habla en el libro de los Hechos. El pueblo de Dios no lo ha tenido fácil. Pero a pesar de sus circunstancias, nos han dejado un legado de fidelidad. ¿Cómo es posible? ¿Cómo podemos superar las difíciles circunstancias que nos rodean para vivir una vida de fidelidad y un impacto positivo?
El apóstol Pablo fue uno de los líderes más influyentes de la iglesia primitiva y autor de la mayoría de las cartas que componen el Nuevo Testamento. Antes de su conversión, Pablo fue uno de los mayores perseguidores de los cristianos, pero después de que Jesús se le apareció, se convirtió en uno de los misioneros más prolíficos que llevaron la buena nueva de Cristo por todo el Imperio Romano. Es en estas cartas que escribió a las iglesias del Nuevo Testamento donde encontramos algunas de las claves para vivir una vida fiel. Pablo escribe: «Porque los que viven conforme a la carne piensan en las cosas de la carne, pero los que viven conforme al Espíritu piensan en las cosas del Espíritu. Porque pensar en la carne es muerte, pero pensar en el Espíritu es vida y paz. Porque la mente puesta en la carne es enemiga de Dios, porque no se sujeta a la ley de Dios; de hecho, no puede. Los que viven según la carne no pueden agradar a Dios». Romanos 8:5-8. Pablo nos dice aquí que si mantenemos nuestra mente enfocada en las cosas de este mundo, no podremos seguir los mandamientos de Dios. Pablo continúa: «No os conforméis a este mundo, sino transformaos mediante la renovación de vuestra mente, para que comprobéis cuál es la voluntad de Dios: buena, agradable y perfecta» (Romanos 12:2).
Renovar nuestra mente y mantener nuestra perspectiva fija en el reino de Dios parece una tarea imposible, especialmente en tiempos difíciles, pero Pablo también nos dice que una vez que nos apartamos del pecado y ponemos nuestra fe en Jesús, somos llenos del Espíritu Santo, quien, entre muchas otras cosas, nos capacita para comprender y obedecer los mandamientos de Dios. «En él también vosotros, habiendo oído la palabra de verdad, el evangelio de vuestra salvación, y creído en él, fuisteis sellados con el Espíritu Santo prometido, que es las arras de nuestra herencia hasta la posesión adquirida, para alabanza de su gloria» (Efesios 1:13-14).
Entonces, ¿qué son estas cosas de la carne y las cosas del Espíritu a las que se refiere Pablo? Creo que las cosas de la carne se refieren al egocentrismo, a centrarse en los propios deseos sin pensar en los demás, a la negación de la existencia de Dios y, por lo tanto, a la falta de voluntad para obedecer sus mandamientos. Pablo habla de las cosas del Espíritu en su carta a los Colosenses cuando dice: «Concentren su atención en las cosas de arriba, no en las de la tierra» (Colosenses 3:2). Pensar en Dios, su Reino, sus expectativas y lo que ha hecho por nosotros, y en nuestro hogar eterno en el cielo, son maneras de enfocarnos en las cosas de arriba. Leer la Biblia y orar también son buenas maneras de mantener nuestra mente enfocada en las cosas de Dios. Pablo también nos dice que, a medida que el Espíritu Santo nos capacita para enfocarnos en las cosas de Dios, también produce en nosotros estas maravillosas cualidades: «Pero el fruto del Espíritu es amor, gozo, paz, paciencia, benignidad, bondad, fidelidad, mansedumbre y dominio propio; contra tales cosas no hay ley». Gálatas 5:22-23.
A lo largo de la historia, creo que el pueblo de Dios ha logrado mantenerse fiel a pesar de las dificultades que ha tenido que soportar gracias al poder del Espíritu Santo y manteniendo la perspectiva adecuada, enfocándose en las cosas de arriba, en lugar de en las circunstancias de su situación actual. Ruego que Dios se revele a ustedes, para que sean llenos del Espíritu Santo y se les encuentre fieles durante estos tiempos difíciles.
