Weekly Message: Peace vs Anxiety
September 29, 2026

Have you ever been in a disagreement with someone where you find a way to settle that dispute? How did it feel when that issue was ultimately resolved? Do you experience that feeling and state of mind with everything in your life? If you could experience that peace all the time, would that be important to you? Over the last few weeks, we have been looking at the gifts that come from the Spirit of God. God tells us in Ezekiel 36:26–27 “I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; and I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh.” As we learned last week, those who believe in Jesus have been given “the fruit of the Spirit (which) is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law” Galatians 5:22-23. This week we will take a closer look at the gift of peace and how it can completely change the life we live.

What things do you think or worry about a lot? Our life can be full of issues and problems that can lead to anxiety and a state of mind where we can always feel distressed. A recent survey looked at the things that most people worry about in the United States. At the top of the list was dying or becoming seriously sick with a chronic illness, having enough money and outliving your savings. There is no doubt that we experience a lot of challenges in life. Do we need to live in a rollercoaster of feelings based on our circumstances or is there another way of living? Now I am not saying that having a chronic or terminal illness is something that shouldn’t bother us, but I am saying that there is a better way to go through life than worrying about everything. The peace that comes from God is a better way.

To understand this peace better, the best place to start is with our current relationship with God. As much as we may want to have peace with God, it is impossible in an unforgiven state. As much as we may try to do the right thing all of the time, it is not possible. With the freedom we have to make our own decisions, we inevitably make bad choices. These bad choices alienate or separate us from God. Knowing this, God sent Jesus to pay the price, so that by believing in Him, we can be forgiven. Once we are forgiven, we can receive the peace that only comes from God. The Apostle Paul wrote about this peace in several of the letters that he wrote. In Romans 5:1, Paul wrote “Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.”

First, peace with God means that we have an ongoing relationship with Him and our connection to God is no longer broken. Have you ever had a falling out with a family member or friend that hung over your head for months, and then finally had the conversation that cleared the air? That relief is a small picture of what Jesus did for us. Before we put our trust in Him, our hearts were naturally separated from God. But when Paul says we have been “justified by faith,” he means God has completely removed that barrier and made things right between us. It is not a feeling that comes and goes depending on whether we had a good day or made a mistake. It is an everyday confidence knowing that God is on our side, that He loves us, and that our relationship with Him is safe and secure forever.

Second, having peace with God means we have confidence that God is looking out for us. Paul wrote “Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and pleading with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension, will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus” Philippians 4:6-7. God doesn’t promise us that hard times won’t happen, but He does promise to not let us be overwhelmed by them. When we trust that God has our best interests in His hands, we can stop worrying about the outcomes and stop trying to carry the load by ourselves. God’s peace steps in like a shield around our thoughts, helping us to stay calm even when our circumstances feel out of control.

Finally, what would your life look like if that same peace guided how you treat other people? When we know that our life is secure in God’s hands we don’t have to go through life angry, worried and easily upset. We don’t have to win every argument or prove that we are right in every situation. God give us a heart that is patient, kind and ready to listen. When we experience God’s peace, we are then able to stop riding an emotional rollercoaster and be in a position to share grace and understanding with those around us.

Mensaje seminal: Paz frente a ansiedad
