Weekly Message: Joseph & Mary – Faithful Servants

Have you ever been a parent?  There are many things you need to be good at to be an effective and supportive parent.  Good parenting starts with showing love by caring for and spending time with your child. Parents need to be patient, have empathy, be good encouragers as well as good listeners to effectively raise their children.  What did parenting look like back when Jesus was born?  The Jewish world was under rule of the Romans who appointed King Herod to oversee the Jewish territory. Herod the Great was largely disliked by the Jewish people as he was paranoid and known for brutal acts towards those he saw that challenged him.  Parenting in this environment was extremely difficult.  Beyond protecting and providing food for their children, good Jewish parents were expected to teach youth the scriptures (Old Testament Bible) and educate them about God’s laws concerning sin, forgiveness and obedience.

 

Joseph and Mary were given the awesome responsibility of being the earthly parents of Jesus. We know from the genealogy that is shared in the bible both in the book of Matthew and the book of Luke that Jesus is a descendent of King David. Both Mary and Joseph were descendants of King David and fulfilled the promise that God made to David. “When your days are complete and you lie down with your fathers, I will raise up your descendant after you, who will come forth from you, and I will establish his kingdom. He shall build a house for My name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever.” 2 Samuel 7:12-13. This prophesy was given to David 1,000 years before Jesus was born.

 

“In the sixth month of Elizabeth’s pregnancy, God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a town in Galilee, to a virgin pledged to be married to a man named Joseph, a descendant of David. The virgin’s name was Mary. The angel went to her and said, “Greetings, you who are highly favored! The Lord is with you.  Mary was greatly troubled at his words and wondered what kind of greeting this might be. But the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary; you have found favor with God. You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you are to call him Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over Jacob’s descendants forever; his kingdom will never end.” Luke 1:26-38.  “Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: Behold, the virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and she will name Him Immanuel.” Isaiah 7:14.

 

Why would God choose Mary to be Jesus’ mother?  Although we don’t know Mary, we can tell from the writings about her that she was humble, but at the same time courageous.  The angel spoke to her and said “Do not be afraid, Mary; for you have found favor with God.” Luke 1:30. Can you imagine what it must have been like to be the mother of Jesus? To know that you carried and cared for the creator of the universe?  We know that Mary was humble and willingly accepted the invitation to be the mother of Jesus. Despite the shame she received from many, Mary would care for and protect Jesus during His early life.  Mary was not wealthy, did not live in any kind of luxury, and ultimately gave birth to Jesus in a stable. 

 

When Joseph learned that Mary was pregnant, he offered to divorce her quietly, until an angel of the Lord appeared to him.  Joseph ultimately took Mary to be his wife and raised Jesus as if He was his own son.  When King Herod heard from the wise men about the birth of Jesus, Herod ordered that all male children in Bethlehem under that age of two should be killed.  Joseph being warned by an angel, took Mary and Jesus to Egypt to keep them safe, while Herod had thousands of babies killed.  Joseph went on to care for Jesus as if He was his own son, teaching Jesus to be a carpenter and educating Him on the Jewish faith. 

 

So, what can we learn from Joseph & Mary from these events?  Both Mary and Joseph were humble, from working class families under the rule of the Romans.  They were not wealthy, have extensive material possessions, or live a life of luxury.  They were faithful, believed in God, and were willing to do what He requested.  Their life was not easy.  God knows and understands that life can be hard as He experienced it firsthand through the life of Jesus. God chooses people who are faithful.  All He asks is from us to believe, do our best, and He will cover the rest. ¿Alguna vez has sido padre? Hay muchas cosas en las que debes ser bueno para ser un padre eficaz y comprensivo. La buena crianza comienza con mostrar amor cuidando y pasando tiempo con tu hijo. Los padres deben ser pacientes, tener empatía, ser buenos animadores y buenos oyentes para criar a sus hijos de manera eficaz. ¿Cómo era la crianza de los hijos cuando nació Jesús? El mundo judío estaba bajo el dominio de los romanos, quienes designaron al rey Herodes para supervisar el territorio judío. Herodes el Grande era muy detestado por el pueblo judío, ya que era paranoico y conocido por sus actos brutales contra aquellos que lo desafiaban. La crianza de los hijos en este entorno era extremadamente difícil. Además de proteger y proporcionar alimento a sus hijos, se esperaba que los buenos padres judíos enseñaran a los jóvenes las Escrituras (la Biblia del Antiguo Testamento) y los educaran acerca de las leyes de Dios sobre el pecado, el perdón y la obediencia.

 

José y María recibieron la enorme responsabilidad de ser los padres terrenales de Jesús. Sabemos por la genealogía que se comparte en la Biblia, tanto en el libro de Mateo como en el de Lucas, que Jesús es descendiente del rey David. Tanto María como José eran descendientes del rey David y cumplieron la promesa que Dios le hizo a David: “Cuando tus días se cumplan y te acuestes con tus padres, levantaré después de ti a un descendiente tuyo, que saldrá de ti, y afirmaré su reino. Él edificará casa a mi nombre, y yo afirmaré el trono de su reino para siempre”. 2 Samuel 7:12-13. Esta profecía le fue dada a David 1000 años antes de que Jesús naciera.

 

“Al sexto mes del embarazo de Isabel, Dios envió al ángel Gabriel a Nazaret, un pueblo de Galilea, a una virgen comprometida para casarse con un hombre llamado José, descendiente de David. El nombre de la virgen era María. El ángel se acercó a ella y le dijo: “¡Salve, muy favorecida! El Señor está contigo. María se turbó mucho al oír estas palabras y se preguntaba qué clase de saludo sería ese. Pero el ángel le dijo: «María, no temas; has hallado gracia delante de Dios. Concebirás y darás a luz un hijo, y le pondrás por nombre Jesús. Él será grande y será llamado Hijo del Altísimo. El Señor Dios le dará el trono de David su padre, y reinará sobre la descendencia de Jacob para siempre; su reino no tendrá fin». Lucas 1:26-38. «Por tanto, el Señor mismo os dará una señal: He aquí que la virgen concebirá y dará a luz un hijo, y le pondrá por nombre Emanuel». Isaías 7:14.

 

¿Por qué Dios eligió a María para ser la madre de Jesús? Aunque no conocemos a María, podemos decir por los escritos sobre ella que era humilde, pero al mismo tiempo valiente. El ángel le habló y le dijo: «María, no temas; porque has hallado gracia delante de Dios». Lucas 1:30. ¿Te imaginas cómo debe haber sido ser la madre de Jesús? ¿Saber que llevabas en tu vientre al Creador del universo y lo cuidabas? Sabemos que María fue humilde y aceptó voluntariamente la invitación de ser la madre de Jesús. A pesar de la vergüenza que recibió de muchos, María cuidaría y protegería a Jesús durante su vida temprana. María no era rica, no vivía en ningún tipo de lujo y finalmente dio a luz a Jesús en un establo.

 

Cuando José se enteró de que María estaba embarazada, ofreció divorciarse de ella en secreto, hasta que un ángel del Señor se le apareció. José finalmente tomó a María como su esposa y crió a Jesús como si fuera su propio hijo. Cuando el rey Herodes escuchó de los magos sobre el nacimiento de Jesús, Herodes ordenó que todos los niños varones de Belén menores de dos años fueran asesinados. José, advertido por un ángel, llevó a María y a Jesús a Egipto para mantenerlos a salvo, mientras que Herodes hizo matar a miles de bebés. José continuó cuidando a Jesús como si fuera su propio hijo, enseñándole a ser carpintero y educándolo en la fe judía.

 

Entonces, ¿qué podemos aprender de José y María a partir de estos eventos? Tanto María como José eran humildes, de familias de clase trabajadora bajo el gobierno de los romanos. No eran ricos, no tenían grandes posesiones materiales ni vivían una vida de lujo. Eran fieles, creían en Dios y estaban dispuestos a hacer lo que Él les pedía. Su vida no fue fácil. Dios sabe y entiende que la vida puede ser difícil, como lo experimentó de primera mano a través de la vida de Jesús. Dios elige a las personas que son fieles.
