Weekly Message: Influence – Who are we listening to?

We live in a world where there are many people speaking into our lives each day. Whether it is our family or close friends, we are constantly bombarded with opinions, advice, and messages. Some are helpful, some are harmful, and many are simply distractions. The influence of the world often tells us to seek pleasure, power, and possessions. It tells us that our worth is found in what we have or what we do. Even our own motivations may try to convince us that we should follow desires for money, power and influence. If we give in to these influences, we are led away from the truth and the fulfilling life that God has called us to live. “Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world. By this you know the Spirit of God: every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God; and every spirit that does not confess Jesus is not from God; this is the spirit of the antichrist, of which you have heard that it is coming, and now it is already in the world.” 1 John 4:1-3.
Our attitudes are constantly being shaped by a variety of sources, some consciously and others almost invisibly. Our immediate circle of family, friends, and close colleagues often have a profound impact on our beliefs, behaviors, and even our sense of self. Their opinions and experiences carry significant weight. Experts and authorities and people we believe are knowledgeable may be giving us medical advice, financial or investments advise, or sharing a specific scientific findings or knowledge. The news we consume, the entertainment we enjoy, and the broader culture we’re exposed to all play a role in shaping our perspectives and values. This includes social media, which has become a powerful force in influencing trends and opinions. Our own past experiences, our personal history, the lessons we’ve learned, and the memories we hold dear also heavily influence how we interpret new information and who we’re willing to listen to. Our values and beliefs are more likely to be influenced by messages and messengers that align with our existing worldview. This can sometimes create echo chambers where we primarily hear perspectives that reinforce what we already believe. This is particularly true in social media as it drowns out voices that may conflict with what we believe. With all of this counter messaging, how do we discern what God’s will may be for my life and not get carried away by everyone else’s ideas?
I think it is important to look at why we may be listening to all these outside sources. Many times, who we listen to is based on who we trust. We’re more likely to be influenced by people we trust and believe have our best interests at heart. We tend to give more weight to the opinions of those we see as competent and knowledgeable. We might be more influenced by people who share similar experiences or perspectives as our own. The way someone presents their message can also significantly impact how receptive we are to it as we are influenced by charisma and communication style. God has given us some great advice on who we should be listening to. “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him,
And He will make your paths straight.” Proverbs 3:5-6. This verse tells us that we should not lean on your own understanding, even though many times we often think we know what’s best. God tells us to submit to him by surrendering our will to His, and it acknowledges that he will make our paths straight. A straight path means what to do, where to go, who listen to and how to get there.
So how do we do that? The bible tells us “But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all generously and without reproach, and it will be given to him.” James 1:5. We can take all of our cares to God through prayer. We can pray individually, or we can pray together with friends or family. The bible has amazing wisdom that can help us in almost any situation rather than relying only on the thoughts of others. Finally, we can seek the wisdom of good Godly counsel when we are wrestling with a situation where we need help. If we seek help from the right sources, God will ensure that we have the best answer. “Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and pleading with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension, will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4:6-7.

Vivimos en un mundo donde muchas personas nos hablan a diario. Ya sean familiares o amigos cercanos, nos bombardean constantemente con opiniones, consejos y mensajes. Algunos son útiles, otros dañinos y muchos son simplemente distracciones. La influencia del mundo a menudo nos impulsa a buscar el placer, el poder y las posesiones. Nos dice que nuestro valor reside en lo que tenemos o en lo que hacemos. Incluso nuestras propias motivaciones pueden intentar convencernos de que debemos seguir los deseos de dinero, poder e influencia. Si cedemos a estas influencias, nos alejamos de la verdad y de la vida plena que Dios nos ha llamado a vivir. Amados, no crean a todo espíritu, sino prueben los espíritus para ver si son de Dios, porque muchos falsos profetas han salido al mundo. En esto conocen el Espíritu de Dios: todo espíritu que confiesa que Jesucristo ha venido en carne, es de Dios; y todo espíritu que no confiesa a Jesús, no es de Dios; este es el espíritu del anticristo, del cual han oído que viene, y que ahora ya está en el mundo. 1 Juan 4:1-3.
Nuestras actitudes se ven constantemente moldeadas por diversas fuentes, algunas conscientemente y otras casi invisiblemente. Nuestro círculo inmediato de familiares, amigos y colegas cercanos a menudo tiene un profundo impacto en nuestras creencias, comportamientos e incluso en nuestra autoestima. Sus opiniones y experiencias tienen un peso significativo. Expertos, autoridades y personas que consideramos conocedoras pueden brindarnos consejos médicos, financieros o de inversión, o compartir hallazgos o conocimientos científicos específicos. Las noticias que consumimos, el entretenimiento que disfrutamos y la cultura en general a la que estamos expuestos influyen en la formación de nuestras perspectivas y valores. Esto incluye las redes sociales, que se han convertido en una poderosa fuerza para influir en tendencias y opiniones. Nuestras propias experiencias pasadas, nuestra historia personal, las lecciones que hemos aprendido y los recuerdos que atesoramos también influyen considerablemente en cómo interpretamos la nueva información y a quién estamos dispuestos a escuchar. Nuestros valores y creencias son más propensos a ser influenciados por mensajes y mensajeros que se alinean con nuestra visión del mundo. Esto a veces puede crear cámaras de eco donde escuchamos principalmente perspectivas que refuerzan lo que ya creemos. Esto es particularmente cierto en las redes sociales, ya que acallan las voces que pueden entrar en conflicto con nuestras creencias. Con todos estos mensajes contrarios, ¿cómo discernimos cuál puede ser la voluntad de Dios para mi vida y no nos dejamos llevar por las ideas de los demás?
Creo que es importante analizar por qué escuchamos a todas estas fuentes externas. Muchas veces, a quién escuchamos se basa en en quién confiamos. Es más probable que nos dejemos influenciar por personas en quienes confiamos y que creemos que velan por nuestros intereses. Tendemos a dar más importancia a las opiniones de quienes consideramos competentes y conocedores. Podríamos ser más influenciados por personas que comparten experiencias o perspectivas similares a las nuestras. La forma en que alguien presenta su mensaje también puede influir significativamente en nuestra receptividad, ya que nos influyen el carisma y el estilo de comunicación. Dios nos ha dado un gran consejo sobre a quién deberíamos escuchar. «Confía en el Señor con todo tu corazón, y no te apoyes en tu propia prudencia. Reconócelo en todos tus caminos, y él enderezará tus veredas» (Proverbios 3:5-6). Este versículo nos dice que no debemos confiar en nuestra propia prudencia, aunque a menudo creamos saber qué es lo mejor. Dios nos dice que nos sometamos a él, sometiendo nuestra voluntad a la suya, y reconoce que él enderezará nuestros caminos. Un camino recto significa qué hacer, adónde ir, a quién escuchar y cómo llegar allí.
¿Cómo lo hacemos? La Biblia nos dice: «Pero si alguno de ustedes tiene falta de sabiduría, pídala a Dios, quien da a todos abundantemente y sin reproche, y le será dada» (Santiago 1:5). Podemos llevar todas nuestras preocupaciones a Dios mediante la oración. Podemos orar individualmente o con amigos o familiares. La Biblia contiene una sabiduría asombrosa que puede ayudarnos en casi cualquier situación, en lugar de depender solo de las opiniones de los demás. Finalmente, podemos buscar la sabiduría del buen consejo de Dios cuando lidiamos con una situación que necesitemos. Si buscamos ayuda de las fuentes correctas, Dios se asegurará de que tengamos la mejor respuesta. «No se inquieten por nada; más bien, en toda ocasión, mediante oración y ruego con acción de gracias, presenten sus peticiones a Dios. Y la paz de Dios, que sobrepasa todo entendimiento, guardará sus corazones y sus pensamientos en Cristo Jesús». Filipenses 4:6-7.
