Weekly Message: Impressive Design?

Yesterday a good part of the United States was able to view a full or partial eclipse of the sun.  This occurs when the moon passes directly in front of the sun and blocks out some or all the light.  The last time this was viewed in the U.S. was in 2017, but this eclipse will last almost twice as long due to the position of the earth, moon and sun. We won’t have another opportunity to view this type of eclipse for more than 20 years.  The eclipse is an amazing event.  For it to occur, the moon must be a New Moon, a period of time when the moon is located between the earth and the sun and the alignment of sun to moon to earth has to be exact.

We have been able to predict eclipses since 700 BC although we have been much more exact in predicting where and when in the last 200 years.  Studying eclipses and the motions of the earth, sun, moon, and planets has shown us just how well designed our universe is. The earth is 93 million miles away from the sun, and the moon is just 225 thousand miles away.  For a total eclipse to occur, the moon must be at just the right distance from the earth and sun for it to block out the sunlight.  It is amazing to me that the movement of the stars, planets and moons fit into precise mathematical models that can be analyzed and understood.  As the eclipse took place yesterday, thousands of people traveled to watch the event.  As the sun began to disappear and the time came for the full eclipse, people shouted and cheered as they were able to see the exact alignment of the moon and sun, and it became possible to see the other planets in our solar system.  Given how precise these models are, why do some of us attribute them to random acts of an unorganized universe that was created at random?

The bible tells us that the glory of God is all around us.  Whether it is the beauty of a coral reef or the enormity of the mountains, the work that God did creating and sustaining the universe and everything in it proclaims his glory. “The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands.  Day after day they pour forth speech; night after night they reveal knowledge.  They have no speech, they use no words; no sound is heard from them. Yet their voice goes out into all the earth, their words to the ends of the world.” Psalm 19:1-4. The Apostle Paul tells us that God’s unseen qualities are clearly seen in creation.  “For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse” Romans 1:20.

So what evidence do we have that God exists?  How can two people look at the same evidence and draw different conclusions?  What conclusion have you drawn and if you don’t believe in God, what evidence would convince you that He exists?  Let’s ask a few questions that might help us better understand how our universe was created. We know from scientific research that our universe had a beginning.  How did it begin?  It came into being from nothing. Although many at one time believed that the universe has always existed, the Big Bang theory is now generally accepted by most as how our universe began. Accepting that there was a beginning to our universe also lends credibility to the fact that something outside of our universe had to create it.  Not only was the universe created, but it was also built with an incredible design that we call the laws of nature.  If any one of these laws or principles were not in place, life would not be possible on the earth.

Not only is our universe and planet complex, so is the human body itself.  We are created from an incredibly complex design that is directed by our DNA to form life perfectly designed to live on this planet.  DNA is the instruction manual that guides the development of cells that are created to make up the various parts of our body.  Despite our differences, 99.9% of DNA is the same in every person and that small .1% accounts for our differences from person to person. 

When we look at the complex nature of our universe, solar system, planet, and living things on earth, we see an incredibly dynamic design.  One that fits together perfectly.  One that could only have been created by God.

Ayer buena parte de Estados Unidos pudo contemplar un eclipse total o parcial de sol. Esto ocurre cuando la luna pasa directamente frente al sol y bloquea parte o toda la luz. La última vez que se vio esto en los EE. UU. fue en 2017, pero este eclipse durará casi el doble debido a la posición de la Tierra, la Luna y el Sol. No tendremos otra oportunidad de ver este tipo de eclipse hasta dentro de 20 años. El eclipse es un evento asombroso. Para que esto ocurra, la luna debe ser Luna Nueva, un período de tiempo en el que la luna se encuentra entre la tierra y el sol y la alineación del sol con la luna y la tierra tiene que ser exacta.

Hemos podido predecir eclipses desde el año 700 a.C. aunque hemos sido mucho más exactos a la hora de predecir dónde y cuándo en los últimos 200 años. El estudio de los eclipses y los movimientos de la Tierra, el Sol, la Luna y los planetas nos ha demostrado lo bien diseñado que está nuestro universo. La Tierra está a 93 millones de millas del Sol y la Luna está a sólo 225 mil millas de distancia. Para que ocurra un eclipse total, la Luna debe estar a la distancia justa de la Tierra y el Sol para bloquear la luz del sol. Me sorprende que el movimiento de las estrellas, los planetas y las lunas encajen en modelos matemáticos precisos que puedan analizarse y comprenderse. Mientras el eclipse tuvo lugar ayer, miles de personas viajaron para presenciar el evento. Cuando el sol comenzó a desaparecer y llegó el momento del eclipse total, la gente gritó y vitoreó al poder ver la alineación exacta de la luna y el sol, y fue posible ver los otros planetas de nuestro sistema solar. Dado lo precisos que son estos modelos, ¿por qué algunos de nosotros los atribuimos a actos aleatorios de un universo desorganizado que fue creado al azar?

La Biblia nos dice que la gloria de Dios está a nuestro alrededor. Ya sea la belleza de un arrecife de coral o la enormidad de las montañas, la obra que Dios hizo al crear y sostener el universo y todo lo que hay en él proclama su gloria. “Los cielos declaran la gloria de Dios; los cielos proclaman la obra de sus manos. Día tras día derraman palabras; noche tras noche revelan conocimiento. No hablan, no usan palabras; no se escucha ningún sonido de ellos. Sin embargo, su voz llega por toda la tierra, sus palabras hasta los confines del mundo”. Salmo 19:1-4. El apóstol Pablo nos dice que las cualidades invisibles de Dios se ven claramente en la creación. “Porque sus atributos invisibles, es decir, su poder eterno y su naturaleza divina, se han percibido claramente, desde la creación del mundo, en las cosas que han sido hechas. Así que no tienen excusa” Romanos 1:20.

Entonces, ¿qué evidencia tenemos de que Dios existe? ¿Cómo pueden dos personas observar la misma evidencia y sacar conclusiones diferentes? ¿A qué conclusión has llegado y si no crees en Dios, qué evidencia te convencería de que Él existe? Hagamos algunas preguntas que podrían ayudarnos a comprender mejor cómo se creó nuestro universo. Sabemos por investigaciones científicas que nuestro universo tuvo un comienzo. ¿Como comenzo? Nació de la nada. Aunque muchos en algún momento creyeron que el universo siempre ha existido, ahora la mayoría acepta generalmente la teoría del Big Bang como la forma en que comenzó nuestro universo. Aceptar que nuestro universo tuvo un comienzo también da credibilidad al hecho de que algo fuera de nuestro universo tuvo que crearlo. No sólo se creó el universo, sino que también se construyó con un diseño increíble que llamamos leyes de la naturaleza. Si alguna de estas leyes o principios no estuviera vigente, la vida no sería posible en la Tierra.

No sólo nuestro universo y nuestro planeta son complejos, también lo es el propio cuerpo humano. Fuimos creados a partir de un diseño increíblemente complejo que es dirigido por nuestro ADN para formar vida perfectamente diseñada para vivir en este planeta. El ADN es el manual de instrucciones que guía el desarrollo de las células que se crean para formar las distintas partes de nuestro cuerpo. A pesar de nuestras diferencias, el 99,9% del ADN es el mismo en todas las personas y ese pequeño 0,1% explica nuestras diferencias de persona a persona.

Cuando observamos la naturaleza compleja de nuestro universo, sistema solar, planeta y seres vivos en la Tierra, vemos un diseño increíblemente dinámico. Uno que encaja perfectamente. Uno que sólo podría haber sido creado por Dios.
