Weekly Message: 2024 – A Year of Important Choices

As we talked about last week, the start of a new year is a great time to step back and evaluate where we are in life and set some goals for how we might want to live differently in the future.  From last week’s message we discovered that very few of our New Year’s resolutions are achieved and by now, many have given up on the changes they sought just a week ago.  Last week I suggested that one of the reasons may be how we decide on the changes we want to make.  It’s not that losing weight, getting in shape, or eating better are bad goals, but many times these items are focused only on ourselves with little thought to how we can impact other people.

I am routinely amazed at some of the incredible things that humans can accomplish.  From the invention of various medicines that cure disease and sustain life, to the spaceships that leave our atmosphere and explore the universe around us, God has given us an incredible ability to learn and discover things that can improve life.  Sadly, many times this amazing ability to create and invent is directed towards self-interest, rather than those things that make life better for many.  We are just at the beginning of a process in the United States to select a new president and congressional leaders of our country. What would it look like if we elected leaders that followed the principles that Jesus taught us?  Many times, the election process can be about soundbites and 30 second commercials but what if we followed the teachings of Jesus as we elect new leaders this fall?  What character traits and skills should we value the most?  As we enter the new election season, let’s see if we can follow Jesus by understanding his perspective on the leadership attributes that are most important for the future leaders we will elect.

Jesus was an advocate and great example for us to follow.  Jesus’ love for others, especially those that were persecuted or oppressed set a stark contrast to how the Romans treated each other and the Jewish people that were under their rule.  Jesus was once asked by the Jewish religious leaders what was the most important commandment from the Jewish bible.  Jesus responded “And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength. The second is this: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no other commandment greater than these.”  So how can we tell if someone loves God?  Although there is not an easy test for this, some examples may be: they value things that are important to God, they make decisions in accordance with our laws, they value people, and they show reverence to God by worship and prayer. Loving others requires that we value all people and look for opportunities to serve in addition to being served.  Individuals putting others needs ahead of their own can many times show us whether they truly believe in the commands of Jesus. 

Jesus was compelled to serve, even those individuals that were his disciples.  Jesus gave us an incredible example of this attitude to serve when he washed the feet of his followers.  An individual’s feet were exposed and dirty in the days of Jesus.  Despite his role as Lord, Jesus washed the feet of the disciples that were following him.   “You call me Teacher and Lord, and you are right, for so I am.  If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet.  For I have given you an example, that you also should do just as I have done to you.  Truly, truly, I say to you, a servant is not greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him.” John 13:13-16.  In Jewish society, washing feet was typically a task reserved for the lowest servants.  Jesus wasn’t just demonstrating an act of humility; he was setting a standard for how his followers should treat each other. Jesus called them to hold the same attitude of service and love in their interactions with one another.  What leaders have shown us that they are willing to serve even if it requires them to take on tasks that are typically performed by others under their authority? What is the right balance between confidence and humility in our leaders?

Jesus also taught us that justice matters.  Jesus spoke out against injustice and oppression and called for fairness and equality for all people. Jesus defended the rights of the poor, the sick, and the oppressed many times reaching out to serve those people.  Jesus was not an advocate for laziness and was a strong proponent for developing the skills God has given us.  Jesus advocated for us to serve, and he set that example for us by giving of himself and his life so that we could be forgiven.  What leaders are showing us that they will give what is needed to serve our country?

So how can we make this election cycle different from the last one?  We can take an objective approach by identifying individuals that demonstrate Christ like leadership characteristics and helping others to make decisions on those, rather than the 30 second sound bite. Mensaje Semanal: Navidad: Un nuevo comienzo

Como hablamos la semana pasada, el comienzo de un nuevo año es un buen momento para dar un paso atrás y evaluar dónde nos encontramos en la vida y establecer algunas metas sobre cómo querríamos vivir de manera diferente en el futuro. Del mensaje de la semana pasada descubrimos que muy pocos de nuestros propósitos de Año Nuevo se logran y, a estas alturas, muchos han renunciado a los cambios que buscaban hace apenas una semana. La semana pasada sugerí que una de las razones puede ser cómo decidimos los cambios que queremos hacer. No es que perder peso, ponerse en forma o comer mejor sean malos objetivos, pero muchas veces estos elementos se centran sólo en nosotros mismos sin pensar en cómo podemos impactar a otras personas.

Habitualmente me sorprenden algunas de las cosas increíbles que los humanos pueden lograr. Desde la invención de diversas medicinas que curan enfermedades y sustentan la vida, hasta las naves espaciales que abandonan nuestra atmósfera y exploran el universo que nos rodea, Dios nos ha dado una capacidad increíble para aprender y descubrir cosas que pueden mejorar la vida. Lamentablemente, muchas veces esta asombrosa capacidad de crear e inventar está dirigida al interés propio, más que a aquellas cosas que mejoran la vida de muchos. Estamos apenas en el comienzo de un proceso en Estados Unidos para seleccionar un nuevo presidente y líderes del Congreso de nuestro país. ¿Cómo sería si eligiéramos líderes que siguieran los principios que Jesús nos enseñó? Muchas veces, el proceso electoral puede consistir en fragmentos de sonido y comerciales de 30 segundos, pero ¿qué pasaría si siguiéramos las enseñanzas de Jesús al elegir nuevos líderes este otoño? ¿Qué rasgos de carácter y habilidades deberíamos valorar más? Al entrar en la nueva temporada electoral, veamos si podemos seguir a Jesús entendiendo su perspectiva sobre los atributos de liderazgo que son más importantes para los futuros líderes que elegiremos.

Jesús fue un defensor y un gran ejemplo a seguir. El amor de Jesús por los demás, especialmente por los perseguidos u oprimidos, contrastaba marcadamente con la forma en que los romanos se trataban entre sí y con el pueblo judío que estaba bajo su dominio. Una vez los líderes religiosos judíos le preguntaron a Jesús cuál era el mandamiento más importante de la Biblia judía. Jesús respondió: “Y amarás al Señor tu Dios con todo tu corazón, y con toda tu alma, y con toda tu mente, y con todas tus fuerzas. El segundo es este: “Amarás a tu prójimo como a ti mismo”. No hay otro mandamiento mayor que estos”. Entonces, ¿cómo podemos saber si alguien ama a Dios? Aunque no hay una prueba fácil para esto, algunos ejemplos pueden ser: valoran las cosas que son importantes para Dios, toman decisiones de acuerdo con nuestras leyes, valoran a las personas y muestran reverencia a Dios mediante la adoración y la oración. Amar a los demás requiere que valoremos a todas las personas y busquemos oportunidades para servir además de ser servidos. Las personas que anteponen las necesidades de los demás a las propias muchas veces pueden mostrarnos si realmente creen en los mandamientos de Jesús.

Jesús se vio obligado a servir, incluso a aquellos que eran sus discípulos. Jesús nos dio un ejemplo increíble de esta actitud de servicio cuando lavó los pies de sus seguidores. Los pies de una persona estaban expuestos y sucios en los días de Jesús. A pesar de su papel de Señor, Jesús lavó los pies de los discípulos que lo seguían. “Me llamáis Maestro y Señor, y tenéis razón, porque así lo soy. Así que, si yo, vuestro Señor y Maestro, os he lavado los pies, vosotros también debéis lavaros los pies unos a otros. Porque os he dado ejemplo, para que también vosotros hagáis lo mismo que yo os he hecho. De cierto, de cierto os digo, que el siervo no es mayor que su señor, ni el mensajero es mayor que el que lo envió”. Juan 13:13-16. En la sociedad judía, lavar los pies era típicamente una tarea reservada a los sirvientes más bajos. Jesús no estaba simplemente demostrando un acto de humildad; estaba estableciendo un estándar sobre cómo sus seguidores deberían tratarse unos a otros. Jesús los llamó a mantener la misma actitud de servicio y amor en sus interacciones unos con otros. ¿Qué líderes nos han demostrado que están dispuestos a servir incluso si eso les exige asumir tareas que normalmente realizan otros bajo su autoridad? ¿Cuál es el equilibrio adecuado entre confianza y humildad en nuestros líderes?

Jesús también nos enseñó que la justicia importa. Jesús habló contra la injusticia y la opresión y pidió justicia e igualdad para todas las personas. Jesús defendió los derechos de los pobres, los enfermos y los oprimidos muchas veces extendiéndose para servir a esas personas. Jesús no fue un defensor de la pereza y fue un firme defensor del desarrollo de las habilidades que Dios nos ha dado. Jesús abogó por que sirviéramos y nos dio ese ejemplo al entregarse a sí mismo y a su vida para que pudiéramos ser perdonados. ¿Qué líderes nos están mostrando que darán lo que se necesita para servir a nuestro país?

Entonces, ¿cómo podemos hacer que este ciclo electoral sea diferente del anterior? Podemos adoptar un enfoque objetivo identificando personas que demuestren características de liderazgo cristianas y ayudando a otros a tomar decisiones sobre ellas, en lugar de los 30 segundos de sonido.
