Weekly Message: A Still Small Voice

We live in a world that is full of things that can occupy our time.  We also live in a season where people and organizations work tirelessly to shape our opinions and influence our behavior. Whether it is the videos we watch or stream, the music we listen to, or the social media apps on our phones, the techniques of influencing decisions are melded into the core of how our society operates today.  We are bombarded by so much information, some of which is false, it can make good decision making very difficult.  How can we make good choices when there are so many things that are influencing our decisions?

There are many different places we can go for help when we are faced with both big and small decisions. Most of us have parents, friends and mentors that can be a good resource when we are faced with hard decisions.  Sometimes it is easier to see the truth when we are not fully tied up in the decision ourselves, that’s why people we trust can be good choices when seeking out advice.  I have personally found that the more life experience someone has the better perspective they have and as such, they give better counsel.  As good as advice can be from family, colleagues and friends, the best counsel I have ever experienced comes from God. So why does the creator of the universe want to help us with the challenging decisions we face in life?  Why does a parent care for their children and want to help them make good decisions?  It is because He loves us, and we love them.

One of the great challenges we all face in life is that we are given the free will to make choices, both good and bad.  From what we eat for breakfast, to what schools we attend and what jobs we ultimately do, our world is filled with choices.  When we read the Old and New Testament bible, we learn of people whose worlds were dramatically changed by the decisions they made, some with direction from God and others who chose to go it on their own.  What kinds of decisions does God care about and how do we position ourselves to hear his voice?  Have you ever heard the phrase “a still small voice?”  In today’s culture, I think many times this voice is supposed to be our inner person, telling us what to do.  But this phrase is from the Old Testament bible. It comes from the book of 1Kings and was spoken to Elijah.  When we think about God, I don’t think we generally associate him as having a still small voice.  I think we expect a much bigger response like the parting of the Red Sea or Jesus commanding the seas to be calmed.  So why would God tell Elijah that he would speak to him in a still small voice?  It was because that was the voice that Elijah was able to hear.

There are times when the work of God is bold and dynamic like the parting of the Red Sea. But much of God’s work starts with smaller decisions that happen in the hearts and minds of people.  So how do we receive direction from God? First, we need to remember that we can’t pick and choose when we seek God for his wisdom.  For some, they live life by their own means and only turn to God when something difficult arises or tragedy strikes.  Our ability to hear from God is connected to our relationship with Him, which is now possible because of the work of Jesus.  “Jesus said to him, I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” John 14:6. So when we come to God in the way He has provided, we can “ask God, who gives (wisdom) generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him.” James 1:5.

We also need to make decisions that are in accordance with God’s word, the bible.  There is much of His will for our lives that is described in detail, and we need to take the time know what it says.  If God has given us direction through His word in the bible, then He will not change His mind today.  Sometimes this can be very difficult to accept. We may want something so much, that we convince ourselves that God will grant an exception.  Unfortunately, we are just deceiving ourselves. When what we need to decide is not included in the bible, then we need to seek God’s direction through prayer.  Jesus has given us the ability to directly approach God, and seek His wisdom.   “Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. Philippeans 4:6. Just like Elijah, if we ask God and wait to hear from Him, God will respond and answer our prayer.  “Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is —his good, pleasing, and perfect will.” Romans 12:2.

Vivimos en un mundo lleno de cosas que pueden ocupar nuestro tiempo. También vivimos en una época en la que las personas y las organizaciones trabajan incansablemente para moldear nuestras opiniones e influir en nuestro comportamiento. Ya sean los videos que miramos o transmitimos, la música que escuchamos o las aplicaciones de redes sociales en nuestros teléfonos, las técnicas para influir en las decisiones están integradas en el núcleo de cómo opera nuestra sociedad hoy. Estamos bombardeados con tanta información, parte de la cual es falsa, que puede dificultar mucho la toma de buenas decisiones. ¿Cómo podemos tomar buenas decisiones cuando hay tantas cosas que influyen en nuestras decisiones?

Hay muchos lugares diferentes a los que podemos acudir en busca de ayuda cuando nos enfrentamos a decisiones grandes y pequeñas. La mayoría de nosotros tenemos padres, amigos y mentores que pueden ser un buen recurso cuando nos enfrentamos a decisiones difíciles. A veces es más fácil ver la verdad cuando no estamos completamente involucrados en la decisión, es por eso que las personas en las que confiamos pueden ser buenas opciones cuando buscamos consejo. Personalmente, he descubierto que cuanta más experiencia de vida tenga alguien, mejor perspectiva tendrá y, como tal, dará mejores consejos. Por muy buenos que puedan ser los consejos de familiares, colegas y amigos, el mejor consejo que he recibido proviene de Dios. Entonces, ¿por qué el creador del universo quiere ayudarnos con las decisiones desafiantes que enfrentamos en la vida? ¿Por qué un padre se preocupa por sus hijos y quiere ayudarlos a tomar buenas decisiones? Es porque Él nos ama y nosotros los amamos.

Uno de los grandes desafíos que todos enfrentamos en la vida es que se nos da el libre albedrío para tomar decisiones, tanto buenas como malas. Desde lo que desayunamos hasta las escuelas a las que asistimos y los trabajos que finalmente hacemos, nuestro mundo está lleno de opciones. Cuando leemos la Biblia del Antiguo y Nuevo Testamento, aprendemos de personas cuyos mundos cambiaron dramáticamente por las decisiones que tomaron, algunos con la dirección de Dios y otros que eligieron hacerlo por su cuenta. ¿Qué tipo de decisiones le importan a Dios y cómo nos posicionamos para escuchar su voz? ¿Alguna vez has escuchado la frase “una voz apacible y apacible”? En la cultura actual, creo que muchas veces se supone que esta voz es nuestra persona interior y nos dice qué hacer. Pero esta frase es de la biblia del Antiguo Testamento. Proviene del libro de 1 Reyes y se lo habló a Elías. Cuando pensamos en Dios, no creo que generalmente lo asociemos con una voz apacible y delicada. Creo que esperamos una respuesta mucho mayor, como la división del Mar Rojo o la orden de Jesús de calmar los mares. Entonces, ¿por qué Dios le diría a Elías que le hablaría en voz baja y apacible? Fue porque esa era la voz que Elías pudo escuchar.

Hay momentos en que la obra de Dios es audaz y dinámica como la división del Mar Rojo. Pero gran parte de la obra de Dios comienza con decisiones más pequeñas que suceden en los corazones y las mentes de las personas. Entonces, ¿cómo recibimos dirección de Dios? Primero, debemos recordar que no podemos escoger cuando buscamos a Dios por su sabiduría. Para algunos, viven la vida por sus propios medios y sólo recurren a Dios cuando surge algo difícil o les ocurre una tragedia. Nuestra capacidad de escuchar a Dios está conectada con nuestra relación con Él, que ahora es posible gracias a la obra de Jesús. “Jesús le dijo: Yo soy el camino, la verdad y la vida. Nadie viene al Padre sino por mí”. Juan 14:6. Entonces, cuando acudimos a Dios en la forma que Él nos ha provisto, podemos “pedir a Dios, que da (sabiduría) generosamente a todos, sin reproche, y le será dada”. Santiago 1:5.

También necesitamos tomar decisiones que estén de acuerdo con la palabra de Dios, la Biblia. Hay gran parte de Su voluntad para nuestras vidas que se describe en detalle y debemos tomarnos el tiempo para saber lo que dice. Si Dios nos ha dado dirección a través de Su palabra en la Biblia, entonces no cambiará de opinión hoy. A veces esto puede resultar muy difícil de aceptar. Es posible que deseemos tanto algo que nos convenzamos de que Dios nos concederá una excepción. Desafortunadamente, simplemente nos estamos engañando a nosotros mismos. Cuando lo que necesitamos decidir no está incluido en la Biblia, entonces debemos buscar la dirección de Dios a través de la oración. Jesús nos ha dado la capacidad de acercarnos directamente a Dios y buscar Su sabiduría. “No estéis afanosos por nada, sino que en todo, mediante oración y súplica con acción de gracias, sean conocidas vuestras peticiones delante de Dios. Filipenses 4:6. Al igual que Elías, si le preguntamos a Dios y esperamos saber de Él, Dios responderá y contestará nuestra oración. “No os conforméis a las costumbres de este mundo, sino transformaos mediante la renovación de vuestra mente. Entonces podrás probar y aprobar cuál es la voluntad de Dios: su voluntad buena, agradable y perfecta”. Romanos 12:2.

Finalmente, debemos estar dispuestos a obedecer la respuesta que Dios da. Puede parecer difícil o imposible, pero con Su ayuda podemos lograr todo lo que Él nos ha propuesto. Llámenos si tiene preguntas o desea que oremos con usted al 305-306-7842. Tus amigos del Ministerio Comunitario.
