Weekly Message: Walking with God or Walking with the World

We live in a world that is changing all the time.  Sometimes those changes are positive and make our culture stronger and other times it seems we keep moving away from the design that God intended.  I was recently reading some research that was conducted by the Pew Research Center on what is most important in life to those living in America.  The Pew organization is a non-partisan charity that does research on a wide range of issues that are facing the world.  A recent survey was conducted in the United States asking individuals to rank order the things that are most important to them. At the top of the list was (1) Spending time with family (90%), (2) Being physically active (74%), Being outdoors and experiencing nature (72%), (3) Being successful in your career (67%), (4) Practicing your religious faith (50%), (5) Participating in creative activities (music, art, writing) (43%).  Does it matter to God what our priorities are? If it does, what changes would He ask us to make?  How does what He shared through the bible influence our choices each day?

Recent research on bible reading suggests that while 77% of adults have a bible, only 39% of individuals open it 3-4 times per year and the ones that read it daily is much smaller.  These numbers have fallen dramatically over the last few years.  With church attendance and reading the bible falling so much, what is shaping our opinions? News, social media applications, and interactions with other people are at the top of the list.  Those that influence our opinions are ultimately influencing our decisions. There is no one who understands the challenges we face in life better then Jesus. His parents, Mary and Joseph were criticized for becoming pregnant with Jesus before they were married.  King Herod was so fearful that Jesus would rule his kingdom, that he killed every child under age 2 in the vicinity of Bethlehem.  Jesus was born into a Jewish family that was living under the rule of the Romans. As Jesus shared who He was and what God expected, many of His friends and neighbors were alienated and wanted to kill Him.  Even His death was the most painful and ruthless form of execution devised by man. Despite these challenges, Jesus remained faithful to God and gave His life as payment so that many could be forgiven.

So, if I am one of the individuals that doesn’t go to church, read the bible, or think about my faith, how does God feel about that?  The bible makes it clear that without forgiveness we are “dead in our trespasses and sins” and “The natural person does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are folly to him, and he is not able to understand them because they are spiritually discerned.” Ephesians 2:1, 1 Corinthians 2:14.  From a spiritual perspective there are only 2 families in the world, the family of God and those that are not. “And you were dead in the trespasses and sins in which you once walked, following the course of this world, following the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that is now at work in the sons of disobedience.” Ephesians 2:1-2. If we prioritize our life based on the world’s priorities, then we are not following God who has told us that loving Him, and loving others should be our greatest priority.  So, what do I do if I am in this situation?

We do not need to be perfect to be in a good relationship with God.  The forgiveness that we receive by believing in Jesus is so extensive, that we are separated from our sin “as far as the east is from the west,
So far has He removed our transgressions from us.” Psalm 103:12. As God removes from us the guilt of our sin, He enables us to understand more of the bible and apply the principles to our lives.  Each day we learn more and with the help of the Holy Spirit, we look to implement God’s teaching into how we live our lives.  This process of sanctification is a life-long process, where we replace our sinful thoughts and behaviors with God honoring thoughts and behaviors. 

If I go to church and read the bible, is there anything I need to do?  Living for God is more than just church and bible study.  It is living a life that is honoring to God.  Church attendance, giving, prayer, bible study, sharing my faith, and finding ways to serve are the investments we make. The return from God is forgiveness, acceptance, love, purpose and a future in heaven. Let each of us assess where we stand and step up to the life that God has called us to.

Vivimos en un mundo que cambia todo el tiempo. A veces, esos cambios son positivos y fortalecen nuestra cultura, y otras veces parece que nos alejamos del diseño que Dios quiso. Hace poco leí una investigación que llevó a cabo el Pew Research Center sobre lo que es más importante en la vida para quienes viven en Estados Unidos. La organización Pew es una organización benéfica no partidista que investiga una amplia gama de cuestiones que enfrenta el mundo. Una encuesta reciente se llevó a cabo en los Estados Unidos en la que se pedía a las personas que ordenaran por orden de importancia las cosas que son más importantes para ellas. En la parte superior de la lista se encontraba (1) Pasar tiempo con la familia (90%), (2) Ser físicamente activo (74%), Estar al aire libre y experimentar la naturaleza (72%), (3) Tener éxito en su carrera (67%), (4) Practicar su fe religiosa (50%), (5) Participar en actividades creativas (música, arte, escritura) (43%). ¿Le importa a Dios cuáles son nuestras prioridades? Si es así, ¿qué cambios nos pediría que hiciéramos? ¿Cómo influye lo que Él compartió a través de la Biblia en nuestras decisiones cada día?

Una investigación reciente sobre la lectura de la Biblia sugiere que, si bien el 77% de los adultos tiene una Biblia, solo el 39% de las personas la abre 3 o 4 veces al año y los que la leen diariamente son mucho más pequeños. Estas cifras han disminuido drásticamente en los últimos años. Con la asistencia a la iglesia y la lectura de la Biblia disminuyendo tanto, ¿qué está moldeando nuestras opiniones? Las noticias, las aplicaciones de redes sociales y las interacciones con otras personas están en la parte superior de la lista. Aquellos que influyen en nuestras opiniones, en última instancia, influyen en nuestras decisiones. No hay nadie que comprenda los desafíos que enfrentamos en la vida mejor que Jesús. Sus padres, María y José, fueron criticados por quedarse embarazados de Jesús antes de casarse. El rey Herodes tenía tanto miedo de que Jesús gobernara su reino, que mató a todos los niños menores de 2 años en las cercanías de Belén. Jesús nació en una familia judía que vivía bajo el gobierno de los romanos. Cuando Jesús compartió quién era y lo que Dios esperaba, muchos de sus amigos y vecinos se sintieron alejados y querían matarlo. Incluso su muerte fue la forma de ejecución más dolorosa y despiadada ideada por el hombre. A pesar de estos desafíos, Jesús permaneció fiel a Dios y dio su vida como pago para que muchos pudieran ser perdonados.

Entonces, si soy una de las personas que no va a la iglesia, no lee la Biblia ni piensa en su fe, ¿cómo se siente Dios al respecto? La Biblia deja en claro que sin perdón estamos “muertos en nuestros delitos y pecados” y “el hombre natural no percibe las cosas que son del Espíritu de Dios, porque para él son locura, y no las puede entender, porque se han de discernir espiritualmente”. Efesios 2:1, 1 Corintios 2:14. Desde una perspectiva espiritual, solo hay 2 familias en el mundo, la familia de Dios y los que no lo son. “Y vosotros estabais muertos en vuestros delitos y pecados, en los cuales anduvisteis en otro tiempo, siguiendo la corriente de este mundo, conforme al príncipe de la potestad del aire, el espíritu que ahora opera en los hijos de desobediencia”. Efesios 2:1-2. Si priorizamos nuestra vida basándonos en las prioridades del mundo, entonces no estamos siguiendo a Dios, quien nos ha dicho que amarlo a Él y amar a los demás debe ser nuestra mayor prioridad. Entonces, ¿qué hago si estoy en esta situación?

No necesitamos ser perfectos para tener una buena relación con Dios. El perdón que recibimos al creer en Jesús es tan extenso, que estamos separados de nuestro pecado “tan lejos como está el oriente del occidente,

tan lejos hizo alejar de nosotros nuestras transgresiones” (Salmo 103:12). A medida que Dios nos quita la culpa de nuestro pecado, nos permite comprender más de la Biblia y aplicar los principios a nuestras vidas. Cada día aprendemos más y con la ayuda del Espíritu Santo, buscamos implementar la enseñanza de Dios en nuestra vida. Este proceso de santificación es un proceso que dura toda la vida, donde reemplazamos nuestros pensamientos y conductas pecaminosas con pensamientos y conductas que honran a Dios.

Si voy a la iglesia y leo la Biblia, ¿hay algo que deba hacer? Vivir para Dios es más que solo ir a la iglesia y estudiar la Biblia. Es vivir una vida que honre a Dios. La asistencia a la iglesia, las donaciones, la oración, el estudio de la Biblia, compartir mi fe y encontrar formas de servir son las inversiones que hacemos. La recompensa de Dios es perdón, aceptación, amor, propósito y un futuro en el cielo. Que cada uno de nosotros evalúe dónde se encuentra y dé un paso adelante para vivir la vida a la que Dios nos ha llamado.
