Weekly Message: Difficult is the Way

Sometimes it is hard to make sense of all the conflicting messages in our society. Our advances in technology make it possible for many to have their thoughts broadcast all over the world through tv, and the myriad of social media applications that are available on your phone.  Estimates suggest that there are more than 200 different Christian denominations in the United States and that number grows to the thousands across the world according to the Center for the Study of Global Christianity.  Despite the number of dominations, the Pew Research Center suggests that Christianity is declining in the United States while non-Christian faiths are growing.  Many of the people leaving the Christian faith are identifying as religiously unaffiliated suggesting the people leaving the faith are opting to follow no religion rather than choosing something different.  Why is this happening? Should this surprise us? Is there anything we can do to stop that trend?

As believers, we should all be motivated to share the good news of Jesus with those that are around us.  Despite our efforts to make the gospel known to many, the bible tells us that the road to heaven is narrow while the gate to destruction is wide.  “Enter by the narrow gate. For the gate is wide and the way is easy that leads to destruction, and those who enter by it are many.  For the gate is narrow and the way is hard that leads to life, and those who find it are few.” Matthew 7:13-14.  What’s interesting about these words from Jesus is that there are only 2 destinations and 2 groups of people.  One group will be welcomed into Heaven while the other will not. What makes the path so difficult and why will only a small group find their way into Heaven?  Some will follow false prophets because they tell them the things they want to hear.  People who sound good but are not really men and women of God.  “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. On that day many will say to me, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and cast out demons in your name, and do many mighty works in your name?’ And then will I declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from me, you workers of lawlessness.’  There will be many who believe they are following Jesus, but they have been deceived by people who were just out for themselves.

There will also be many who choose to follow someone or something else.  There are more than 10,000 religions in the world with 75% of the people being Christian, Islam, Hinduism, and Buddhism.  Probably the largest growing population in the United States is Nones, those individuals who do not believe in a creator.  The term “nones” is sometimes used in the U.S. to refer to those who are unaffiliated with any organized religion. The name is derived from surveys of religious affiliation, in which “None” (or “None of the above”) is typically the chosen.  So why are so many people moving away from Christianity? The answers are many.  Seeing religious people as too judgmental, religion being too focused on money, individuals not feeling able to trust organized religion, not being able to trust religious leaders, and not believing it to be relevant to their lives are all reasons given for leaving churches.  We have also seen church scandals and the behavior of the church leadership and members make it difficult to attend church.  These kinds of struggles are not new, and interestingly have nothing to do with who God and Jesus actually are. So, what does God expect of us and what actions do we need to take?

The stakes are high.  Each of us will face our last day on earth and spend the rest of eternity somewhere.  God has allowed us to make a choice of what we believe in and what we will reject.  According to Jesus, we have two choices.  We can choose the easy way in this life where the gate is wide where many will be on their way to a life separated from God. Or we can choose the hard way which is to follow Jesus.  “So, the last will be first, and the first last.” Matthew 20:6. “The first” are the privileged, prestigious, and selfish who get ahead in this life while defying God’s commandments. But they will receive condemnation in the life to come. “The last,” though rejected by the world, will receive a great reward in heaven from God.  But don’t trust my words.  Trust in what Jesus had to say. “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. Mensaje Semanal: Difícil es el camino

A veces resulta difícil comprender todos los mensajes contradictorios que hay en nuestra sociedad. Nuestros avances tecnológicos hacen posible que muchas personas transmitan sus pensamientos a todo el mundo a través de la televisión y de la gran cantidad de aplicaciones de redes sociales que están disponibles en los teléfonos. Se estima que existen más de 200 denominaciones cristianas diferentes en los Estados Unidos y que esa cifra aumenta hasta los miles en todo el mundo, según el Centro para el Estudio del Cristianismo Global. A pesar de la cantidad de denominaciones, el Pew Research Center sugiere que el cristianismo está decayendo en los Estados Unidos, mientras que las religiones no cristianas están creciendo. Muchas de las personas que abandonan la fe cristiana se identifican como no afiliadas a ninguna religión, lo que sugiere que las personas que abandonan la fe están optando por no seguir ninguna religión en lugar de elegir algo diferente. ¿Por qué sucede esto? ¿Debería sorprendernos? ¿Hay algo que podamos hacer para detener esa tendencia?

Como creyentes, todos deberíamos estar motivados a compartir las buenas noticias de Jesús con quienes nos rodean. A pesar de nuestros esfuerzos por hacer que el evangelio sea conocido por muchos, la Biblia nos dice que el camino al cielo es angosto mientras que la puerta a la destrucción es ancha. “Entrad por la puerta estrecha, porque ancha es la puerta y espacioso el camino que lleva a la perdición, y muchos son los que entran por ella. Porque estrecha es la puerta y angosto el camino que lleva a la vida, y pocos son los que la hallan.” Mateo 7:13-14. Lo interesante de estas palabras de Jesús es que solo hay 2 destinos y 2 grupos de personas. Un grupo será bienvenido en el Cielo mientras que el otro no. ¿Qué hace que el camino sea tan difícil y por qué solo un pequeño grupo encontrará su camino al Cielo? Algunos seguirán a falsos profetas porque les dicen las cosas que quieren escuchar. Personas que suenan bien pero que en realidad no son hombres y mujeres de Dios. “No todo el que me dice: “Señor, Señor”, entrará en el reino de los cielos, sino el que hace la voluntad de mi Padre que está en los cielos. En aquel día muchos me dirán: Señor, Señor, ¿no profetizamos en tu nombre, y en tu nombre echamos fuera demonios, y en tu nombre hicimos muchos milagros? Y entonces les declararé: Nunca os conocí; apartaos de mí, hacedores de maldad. Habrá muchos que crean que siguen a Jesús, pero han sido engañados por personas que sólo buscaban su propio beneficio.

También habrá muchos que elijan seguir a alguien o algo más. Hay más de 10.000 religiones en el mundo, y el 75% de la población es cristiana, islámica, hinduista y budista. Probablemente la población de mayor crecimiento en los Estados Unidos son los no creyentes, aquellos individuos que no creen en un creador. El término “no creyentes” se utiliza a veces en los Estados Unidos para referirse a aquellos que no están afiliados a ninguna religión organizada. El nombre se deriva de encuestas de afiliación religiosa, en las que “Ninguno” (o “Ninguno de los anteriores”) es típicamente el elegido. Entonces, ¿por qué tanta gente se está alejando del cristianismo? Las respuestas son muchas. Ver a las personas religiosas como demasiado prejuiciosas, la religión demasiado centrada en el dinero, las personas que no se sienten capaces de confiar en la religión organizada, no poder confiar en los líderes religiosos y no creer que sea relevante para sus vidas son todas razones que se dan para abandonar las iglesias. También hemos visto escándalos en la iglesia y el comportamiento de los líderes y miembros de la iglesia que dificultan la asistencia a la iglesia. Este tipo de luchas no son nuevas y, curiosamente, no tienen nada que ver con quiénes son realmente Dios y Jesús. Entonces, ¿qué espera Dios de nosotros y qué acciones debemos tomar?

Hay mucho en juego. Cada uno de nosotros enfrentará su último día en la tierra y pasará el resto de la eternidad en algún lugar. Dios nos ha permitido elegir en qué creemos y qué rechazamos. Según Jesús, tenemos dos opciones. Podemos elegir el camino fácil en esta vida, donde la puerta es amplia y muchos estarán en camino a una vida separada de Dios. O podemos elegir el camino difícil, que es seguir a Jesús. “Así, los últimos serán primeros y los primeros, últimos”. Mateo 20:6. “Los primeros” son los privilegiados, prestigiosos y egoístas que salen adelante en esta vida mientras desafían los mandamientos de Dios. Pero recibirán condenación en la vida venidera. “Los últimos”, aunque rechazados por el mundo, recibirán una gran recompensa en el cielo de parte de Dios. Pero no confíes en mis palabras. Confía en lo que Jesús tenía que decir. “Yo soy el camino, la verdad y la vida. Nadie viene al Padre sino por mí”. Juan 14:16.
