Weekly Message: False Teaching

Have you ever been told something that later you found out wasn’t true? Sometimes those lies are simple things that do us no harm, but other times the stories we believe have a much more negative impact on us.  Many times, the stories we are told have an intended purpose. Have you ever purchased something in the store or on-line that turned out to be different than you thought it would be?  The people that advertised it wanted to influence you to purchase it, but stretched the truth so it would seem better than it was.  When it comes to our faith, what are we supposed to believe and how can we know when someone is telling us something that is not true?

Jesus himself warned us that false Christs and false prophets would come on the scene and attempt to deceive those who were pursuing God.  “Then if anyone says to you, ‘Look, here is the Christ!’ or ‘There he is!’ do not believe it.  For false christs and false prophets will arise and perform great signs and wonders, so as to lead astray, if possible, even the elect.  See, I have told you beforehand. So, if they say to you, ‘Look, he is in the wilderness,’ do not go out. If they say, ‘Look, he is in the inner rooms,’ do not believe it.  For as the lightning comes from the east and shines as far as the west, so will be the coming of the Son of Man.” Matthew 24:23-27. Jesus also told us that “a tree is recognized by its fruit.”  So, is it possible to recognize someone who might say they are a pastor or messenger from God that is not?

There have been and continue to be many people who represent themselves as serving God, but that was the furthest from the truth.  Many times, false teachers target the spiritually immature, those that are not knowledgeable about the bible and are susceptible to believing lies.  One of the most telling signs of a cult or a mis-guided church is the source of their doctrine.  Cults do not remain faithful to the bible and usually “cherry-pick” passages in the bible that support their beliefs, or they choose another set of doctrine altogether.  Many times, a group’s leader becomes the focus of attention rather than the focus being on Jesus and the church.  Any time attention is turned to a church leader rather than Jesus, the focus is going in the wrong direction.  When Satan was tempting Jesus, he used the words of the Old Testament bible to try and confuse and tempt Jesus in to worshiping him.  We need to understand the bible for us to assess any church leader.  Another sign to watch out for is when church leaders are not forthcoming with information and decisions are not open and shared.  Most of the finances of any Christian organization should be open and not shrouded in secrecy.  Accountability is important in any organization, especially the church. 

“For no good tree bears bad fruit, nor again does a bad tree bear good fruit, for each tree is known by its own fruit. For figs are not gathered from thornbushes, nor are grapes picked from a bramble bush.” Luke 6:43-44. “But false prophets also arose among the people, just as there will be false teachers among you, who will secretly bring in destructive heresies, even denying the Master who bought them, bringing upon themselves swift destruction.  And many will follow their sensuality, and because of them the way of truth will be blasphemed.  And in their greed they will exploit you with false words. Their condemnation from long ago is not idle, and their destruction is not asleep.” 2 Peter 2:1-3.  Jesus tells us that we can recognize people by their fruits. Typically, false teachers will exhibit characteristics we can notice.  Pride, greed, sex and power are all attributes that will ultimately show themselves in someone who is not representing God.

“But understand this, that in the last days there will come times of difficulty. For people will be lovers of self, lovers of money, proud, arrogant, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, heartless, unappeasable, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not loving good, treacherous, reckless, swollen with conceit, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, having the appearance of godliness, but denying its power. Avoid such people.” 2 Timothy 3:1-5.  Our greatest defense against false teaching is our understanding of the Bible.  We need to hold our leaders accountable to living lives that bring honor to God.  That doesn’t mean that they are perfect, but it does mean that they are actively working through the power of the Holy Spirit to remove sin from their lives and honor God in all that they do.

¿Alguna vez te han dicho algo que luego descubriste que no era cierto? A veces esas mentiras son cosas simples que no nos hacen daño, pero otras veces las historias que creemos tienen un impacto mucho más negativo en nosotros. Muchas veces, las historias que nos cuentan tienen un propósito previsto. ¿Alguna vez has comprado algo en la tienda o en línea que resultó ser diferente de lo que pensabas? Las personas que lo anunciaban querían influir en usted para que lo comprara, pero exageraron la verdad para que pareciera mejor de lo que era. Cuando se trata de nuestra fe, ¿qué se supone que debemos creer y cómo podemos saber cuando alguien nos está diciendo algo que no es cierto?

Jesús mismo nos advirtió que falsos Cristos y falsos profetas entrarían en escena e intentarían engañar a los que buscaban a Dios. “Entonces, si alguno os dice: ‘¡Mirad, aquí está el Cristo!’ o ‘¡Ahí está!’, no lo creáis. Porque se levantarán falsos cristos y falsos profetas y harán grandes señales y prodigios, para extraviar, si es posible, incluso a los elegidos. Mira, te lo he dicho de antemano. Por tanto, si os dicen: “Mirad, está en el desierto”, no salgáis. Si dicen: “Mira, está en los aposentos interiores”, no lo creáis. Porque como el relámpago que sale del oriente y brilla hasta el occidente, así será la venida del Hijo del Hombre”. Mateo 24:23-27. Jesús también nos dijo que “un árbol se reconoce por su fruto”. Entonces, ¿es posible reconocer a alguien que podría decir que es pastor o mensajero de Dios y que no lo es?

Ha habido y sigue habiendo muchas personas que se presentan a sí mismas como sirviendo a Dios, pero eso era lo más alejado de la verdad. Muchas veces, los falsos maestros se dirigen a los espiritualmente inmaduros, aquellos que no conocen la Biblia y son susceptibles a creer mentiras. Una de las señales más reveladoras de una secta o una iglesia equivocada es la fuente de su doctrina. Las sectas no permanecen fieles a la Biblia y por lo general “seleccionan” pasajes de la Biblia que apoyan sus creencias, o eligen otro conjunto de doctrinas por completo. Muchas veces, el líder de un grupo se convierte en el centro de atención en lugar de centrarse en Jesús y la iglesia. Cada vez que la atención se dirige a un líder de la iglesia en lugar de a Jesús, el enfoque va en la dirección equivocada. Cuando Satanás estaba tentando a Jesús, usó las palabras de la Biblia del Antiguo Testamento para tratar de confundir y tentar a Jesús para que lo adore. Necesitamos entender la Biblia para poder evaluar a cualquier líder de la iglesia. Otra señal a tener en cuenta es cuando los líderes de la iglesia no brindan información y las decisiones no son abiertas ni compartidas. La mayoría de las finanzas de cualquier organización cristiana deben ser abiertas y no envueltas en secreto. La rendición de cuentas es importante en cualquier organización, especialmente en la iglesia.

“Porque ningún árbol bueno da malos frutos, ni tampoco un árbol malo da buenos frutos, porque cada árbol se conoce por su propio fruto. Porque no se recogen higos de las zarzas, ni se recogen uvas de las zarzas. Lucas 6:43-44. “Pero también surgieron falsos profetas entre el pueblo, como habrá entre vosotros falsos maestros, que introducirán encubiertamente herejías destructivas, negando incluso al Maestro que los rescató, atrayendo sobre sí mismos destrucción repentina. Y muchos seguirán su sensualidad, y por causa de ellos será blasfemado el camino de la verdad. Y en su avaricia os explotarán con palabras falsas. Su condena desde hace mucho tiempo no es vana, y su destrucción no está dormida”. 2 Pedro 2:1-3. Jesús nos dice que podemos reconocer a las personas por sus frutos. Por lo general, los falsos maestros exhibirán características que podemos notar. El orgullo, la codicia, el sexo y el poder son atributos que finalmente se manifestarán en alguien que no representa a Dios.

“Pero entended esto, que en los últimos días vendrán tiempos de dificultad. Porque los hombres serán amadores de sí mismos, amadores del dinero, soberbios, soberbios, abusivos, desobedientes a sus padres, ingratos, impíos, desalmados, insoportables, calumniadores, sin dominio propio, brutales, no amantes del bien, traicioneros, temerarios, hinchados de vanidad, amadores de los deleites más que de Dios, que tienen apariencia de piedad, pero niegan su eficacia. Evite a esas personas “. 2 Timoteo 3:1-5. Nuestra mayor defensa contra las falsas enseñanzas es nuestra comprensión de la Biblia. Necesitamos responsabilizar a nuestros líderes de vivir vidas que honren a Dios. Eso no significa que sean perfectos, pero sí significa que están trabajando activamente a través del poder del Espíritu Santo para eliminar el pecado de sus vidas y honrar a Dios en todo lo que hacen.
