Weekly Message: God the Father

All of us have a dad and for some of us, we are a dad or have been one.  Dads provide a critical role in raising children in our society & culture.  For those that have been raised by a good and faithful father, the care he provided and the lessons he taught will last a lifetime.  Although the role continues to expand and change, dad’s can be providers of the necessities of life (food, clothing & shelter), a teacher of many skills (communication, values, social rules, family rules), a nurturer, a provider of love, and the one that leads the family in faith.  This past weekend, we were able to show the dad’s that we love how much we appreciate them. We also have another father, the one who created us and has a specific plan on how we should spend our life.

We don’t all have great stories about our dad’s, but we do all share the same heavenly Father.  So, who is our heavenly Father and how does He protect and care for us?  We need to trace His love and care for us all the way back to the first man and women He created.  God created Adam and Eve in His own image, and he called them “mankind’ He commanded them to ” be fruitful, multiply, fill the earth and subdue it, and have dominion over ‘every living thing” Genesis 1:27-28, 5:1-2.  God ordained that the fruit and trees should provide food, and God “took Adam and put him in the garden of Eden, to tend and keep it” Genesis 1:29, 2:8,15. God warned Adam not to eat of the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil. “For in the day you eat of it, you shall surely die” Genesis 2:16-17.  God said, “It is not good that man should be alone. I will make him a helper suitable for him” Genesis 2:18. God made a woman and decreed that “a man shall be joined to his wife, and they shall become one flesh” Genesis 2:24.  God foretold and promised that the seed (a descendant) of the woman would bruise the serpent’s head and the serpent would bruise his heel (Genesis 3:15). This is the first Messianic promise, a promise that Satan would cause Christ to suffer, an ultimately Christ would conquer him.

God had a plan to be our Father from the beginning.  First, God has given us His word in the bible.  The bible is a collection of books written by different authors over hundreds of years that were inspired by God.  Assembled together, these writings answer hundreds of questions including who we are, why we exist, where we need to go and how we should live.  God can guide us when we feel lost and teach us when we are not sure which way to go.  “I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with my eye upon you.” Psalm 32:8. God protects us from danger and has our best interests in mind.  “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight. Proverbs 3:5-6.

When we read back over these sections in Genesis, we see that God had a plan from the very beginning to look out for the welfare of the human race that He created.  As we move on in history to God’s interaction with Moses, we see God reaching back out to his people who had turned away from Him. As a people, we were in desperate need of God’s attention.  We had turned away from Him and began worshiping statues and other idols.   Any act that places a person, object or concept above God is considered idol worship.  In some respect, we see a significant expansion of that kind of thinking today. Idols can come from many places.  Today we see many things worshiped including image, money and material things, job & professional status, physical appearance, entertainment, sex, comfort, technology, the family, and fame.  Although many of these things are not bad, they all can get in the way of the kind of worship we should be directing towards God.

So how does God expect us to praise and worship Him? Praise is acknowledging and thanking God for the things that He has done in our lives. It is recognizing that it is only through God, that blessings will enter our lives. When we praise God, we are expressing our admiration to Him for who He is and what He has done.  Worship happens when we realize that despite my best efforts, I am unable to live up to the standards God has set.  It is understanding that it is only through the death of Jesus, that my sins can be paid for.  Worship happens when we realize that God was willing to go through that much pain and suffering, so the I could be forgiven and spend eternity with Him. Todos tenemos un papá y para algunos de nosotros, somos papá o lo hemos sido. Los papás desempeñan un papel fundamental en la crianza de los niños en nuestra sociedad y cultura. Para aquellos que han sido criados por un padre bueno y fiel, el cuidado que les brindó y las lecciones que les enseñó durarán toda la vida. Aunque el papel continúa expandiéndose y cambiando, el padre puede ser proveedor de las necesidades de la vida (comida, ropa y refugio), maestro de muchas habilidades (comunicación, valores, reglas sociales, reglas familiares), cuidador, proveedor de amor. , y el que guía a la familia en la fe. El fin de semana pasado pudimos mostrarles a los papás que los amamos y lo mucho que los apreciamos. También tenemos otro padre, el que nos creó y tiene un plan específico sobre cómo debemos pasar nuestra vida.

No todos tenemos grandes historias sobre la de nuestro padre, pero todos compartimos el mismo Padre celestial. Entonces, ¿quién es nuestro Padre celestial y cómo nos protege y cuida? Necesitamos rastrear Su amor y cuidado por nosotros hasta el primer hombre y mujer que Él creó. Dios creó a Adán y a Eva a su propia imagen, y los llamó “humanidad”. Les ordenó “crecer, multiplicarse, llenar la tierra y sojuzgarla, y tener dominio sobre ‘todo ser viviente’ Génesis 1:27-28, 5:1-2. Dios ordenó que los frutos y los árboles proporcionaran alimento, y Dios “tomó a Adán y lo puso en el jardín del Edén, para que lo cuidara y lo guardara” Génesis 1:29, 2:8,15. Dios advirtió a Adán que no comiera del Árbol del Conocimiento del Bien y del Mal. “Porque el día que de él comieres, ciertamente morirás” Génesis 2:16-17. Dios dijo: “No es bueno que el hombre esté solo. Le haré una ayuda adecuada para él” Génesis 2:18. Dios hizo a la mujer y decretó que “el hombre se unirá a su mujer, y serán una sola carne” Génesis 2:24. Dios predijo y prometió que la simiente (un descendiente) de la mujer heriría la cabeza de la serpiente y la serpiente heriría su calcañar (Génesis 3:15). Esta es la primera promesa mesiánica, una promesa de que Satanás haría sufrir a Cristo y, en última instancia, Cristo lo conquistaría.

Dios tenía un plan para ser nuestro Padre desde el principio. Primero, Dios nos ha dado Su palabra en la Biblia. La Biblia es una colección de libros escritos por diferentes autores durante cientos de años que fueron inspirados por Dios. Reunidos en conjunto, estos escritos responden a cientos de preguntas, entre ellas quiénes somos, por qué existimos, adónde debemos ir y cómo debemos vivir. Dios puede guiarnos cuando nos sentimos perdidos y enseñarnos cuando no estamos seguros de qué camino tomar. “Yo os instruiré y os enseñaré el camino que debéis andar; Yo te aconsejaré con mis ojos puestos en ti”. Salmo 32:8. Dios nos protege del peligro y tiene en mente nuestros mejores intereses. “Confía en el Señor con todo tu corazón y no te apoyes en tu propia prudencia; Sométete a él en todos tus caminos, y él enderezará tus veredas. Proverbios 3:5-6.

Cuando volvemos a leer estas secciones del Génesis, vemos que Dios tenía un plan desde el principio para velar por el bienestar de la raza humana que Él creó. A medida que avanzamos en la historia hacia la interacción de Dios con Moisés, vemos que Dios se acerca a su pueblo que se había alejado de Él. Como pueblo, necesitábamos desesperadamente la atención de Dios. Nos habíamos alejado de Él y comenzamos a adorar estatuas y otros ídolos. Cualquier acto que coloque a una persona, objeto o concepto por encima de Dios se considera adoración de ídolos. En cierto sentido, hoy vemos una expansión significativa de ese tipo de pensamiento. Los ídolos pueden venir de muchos lugares. Hoy en día vemos muchas cosas adoradas, incluida la imagen, el dinero y las cosas materiales, el estatus laboral y profesional, la apariencia física, el entretenimiento, el sexo, la comodidad, la tecnología, la familia y la fama. Aunque muchas de estas cosas no son malas, todas pueden obstaculizar el tipo de adoración que deberíamos dirigir a Dios.

Entonces, ¿cómo espera Dios que lo alabemos y adoremos? La alabanza es reconocer y agradecer a Dios por las cosas que ha hecho en nuestras vidas. Es reconocer que es sólo a través de Dios, que las bendiciones entrarán en nuestras vidas. Cuando alabamos a Dios, le expresamos nuestra admiración por quién es y por lo que ha hecho. La adoración ocurre cuando nos damos cuenta de que a pesar de mis mejores esfuerzos, no puedo estar a la altura de los estándares que Dios ha establecido. Es comprender que sólo a través de la muerte de Jesús mis pecados pueden ser pagados. La adoración ocurre cuando nos damos cuenta de que Dios estuvo dispuesto a pasar por tanto dolor y sufrimiento, para poder ser perdonado y pasar la eternidad con Él.
