Weekly Message: Our Inheritance

Have you ever wondered what your inheritance will be?  We use the word inheritance several ways today. One meaning of the word would be those things you acquire from someone who has died.  The Mirriam Webster Dictionary defines the word to mean “the acquisition of a possession, condition, or trait from past generations.” Many of us might receive an inheritance from our close family members.  It may be a natural ability, or it may be money or property that passes to us upon the death of a loved one.  For those that believe in Jesus, we have an inheritance that is past on to us that is more valuable than anything we might inherit from a friend or family member, we inherit eternal life with God.

One of the amazing things about being a believer in Jesus is that we become a member of the family of God.   “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places.”  Ephesians 1:3. These spiritual blessings are eternal and by God’s grace we are given these blessings as His children.  Other rewards of our inheritance include the gift of the Holy Spirit at the moment we believe in Christ, which empowers us to live for Him in the present, and the knowledge that our salvation is secure for eternity. The Apostle Paul goes on to tell us “The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, provided we suffer with him in order that we may also be glorified with him.” Romans 8:16-17.

So, what do we know about this inheritance of eternal life? We live in a world where everything wears out and is subject to decay.  What we receive from God is imperishable (it does not fade or go away). What we have from God lasts forever.  “Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal.” Matthew 6:19-20.  What we receive in Christ is unspoiled, not used or degraded in any way.  Nothing on earth is perfect, even the most beautiful things like diamond rings have small defects.  Our inheritance through Christ is holy, blameless, exalted, and pure.  No earthly corruption or weakness can touch what God has created.

The inheritance we have of eternal life in Christ is reserved for us and protected for us.  Despite the challenges we face in life, our home in heaven has been reserved for us by God. “I give them eternal life, and they will never perish, and no one will snatch them out of my hand.  My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all, and no one is able to snatch them out of the Father ‘s hand.” John 10:28–29. “And the twelve gates were twelve pearls, each of the gates made of a single pearl, and the street of the city was pure gold, like transparent glass.  And I saw no temple in the city, for its temple is the Lord God the Almighty and the Lamb. And the city has no need of sun or moon to shine on it, for the glory of God gives it light, and its lamp is the Lamb. By its light will the nations walk, and the kings of the earth will bring their glory into it, and its gates will never be shut by day—and there will be no night there.

So, with such a great promise to us, why won’t everyone have a home in heaven?   God really does love us. He loves us far more than we can ever imagine. God is compassionate and loving, but he is also holy and just. Our sinful and evil thoughts and actions are opposed by God. As a just God, those actions cannot go unpunished.  Without forgiveness, we are guilty before God.  That’s why he sent Jesus.  God knows that we have no chance of making a payment for the sins we have committed.  Even if we live a noble life, we all have done things that violate God’s law.  That’s why belief in Jesus is so important.   ^“For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh but made alive in the spirit. 1 Peter 3:18. “Because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved. For the Scripture says, “Everyone who believes in him will not be put to shame.” For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek; for the same Lord is Lord of all, bestowing his riches on all who call on him. For “everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.”  Romans 10:9-13.

¿Alguna vez te has preguntado cuál será tu herencia? Hoy en día utilizamos la palabra herencia de varias maneras. Un significado de la palabra sería aquellas cosas que se adquieren de alguien que ha muerto. El Diccionario Mirriam Webster define la palabra como “la adquisición de una posesión, condición o rasgo de generaciones pasadas”. Muchos de nosotros podríamos recibir una herencia de nuestros familiares cercanos. Puede ser una habilidad natural, o puede ser dinero o propiedad que nos pasa tras la muerte de un ser querido. Para aquellos que creen en Jesús, tenemos una herencia que nos ha pasado y que es más valiosa que cualquier cosa que podamos heredar de un amigo o familiar: heredamos la vida eterna con Dios.

Una de las cosas sorprendentes de ser creyente en Jesús es que nos convertimos en miembros de la familia de Dios. “Bendito sea el Dios y Padre de nuestro Señor Jesucristo, que nos ha bendecido en Cristo con toda bendición espiritual en las regiones celestiales”. Efesios 1:3. Estas bendiciones espirituales son eternas y, por la gracia de Dios, recibimos estas bendiciones como Sus hijos. Otras recompensas de nuestra herencia incluyen el don del Espíritu Santo en el momento en que creemos en Cristo, que nos capacita para vivir para Él en el presente, y el conocimiento de que nuestra salvación está segura para la eternidad. El apóstol Pablo continúa diciéndonos: “El Espíritu mismo da testimonio a nuestro espíritu de que somos hijos de Dios, y si hijos, también herederos; herederos de Dios y coherederos con Cristo, con tal que suframos con él para poder vivir”. también sed glorificados con él”. Romanos 8:16-17.

Entonces, ¿qué sabemos acerca de esta herencia de vida eterna? Vivimos en un mundo donde todo se desgasta y está sujeto a decadencia. Lo que recibimos de Dios es imperecedero (no se desvanece ni desaparece). Lo que tenemos de Dios dura para siempre. “No os hagáis tesoros en la tierra, donde la polilla y el orín corrompen, y donde ladrones minan y hurtan, sino haceos tesoros en el cielo, donde ni la polilla ni el orín corrompen, y donde ladrones no minan ni hurtan.” Mateo 6:19-20. Lo que recibimos en Cristo es intacto, no usado ni degradado de ninguna manera. Nada en la tierra es perfecto, incluso las cosas más hermosas como los anillos de diamantes tienen pequeños defectos. Nuestra herencia a través de Cristo es santa, irreprochable. exaltado y puro, ninguna corrupción o debilidad terrenal puede tocar lo que Dios ha creado.

La herencia que tenemos de la vida eterna en Cristo está reservada para nosotros y protegida para nosotros. A pesar de los desafíos que enfrentamos en la vida, Dios nos ha reservado nuestro hogar en el cielo. “Yo les doy vida eterna, y no perecerán jamás, ni nadie los arrebatará de mi mano. Mi Padre que me las ha dado, es mayor que todos, y nadie puede arrebatarlas de la mano del Padre”. Juan 10:28–29. “Y las doce puertas eran doce perlas, cada una de las puertas estaba hecha de una sola perla, y la calle de la ciudad era de oro puro, como vidrio transparente. Y no vi ningún templo en la ciudad, porque su templo es el Señor Dios Todopoderoso y el Cordero. Y la ciudad no tiene necesidad de sol ni de luna que la ilumine, porque la gloria de Dios la alumbra, y su lámpara es el Cordero. A su luz caminarán las naciones, y los reyes de la tierra traerán a ella su gloria, y sus puertas nunca se cerrarán de día, ni allí habrá noche.

Entonces, con una promesa tan grande para nosotros, ¿por qué no todos tendrán un hogar en el cielo? Dios realmente nos ama. Él nos ama mucho más de lo que podemos imaginar. Dios es compasivo y amoroso, pero también es santo y justo. Dios se opone a nuestros pensamientos y acciones pecaminosos y malvados. Como Dios justo, esas acciones no pueden quedar impunes. Sin perdón, somos culpables ante Dios. Por eso envió a Jesús. Dios sabe que no tenemos ninguna posibilidad de pagar por los pecados que hemos cometido. Incluso si vivimos una vida noble, todos hemos hecho cosas que violan la ley de Dios. Por eso es tan importante creer en Jesús. “Porque también Cristo padeció una sola vez por los pecados, el justo por los injustos, para llevarnos a Dios, siendo muerto en la carne pero vivificado en el espíritu. 1 Pedro 3:18. “Porque si confiesas con tu boca que Jesús es el Señor y crees en tu corazón que Dios lo resucitó de entre los muertos, serás salvo. Porque con el corazón se cree y se justifica, pero con la boca se confiesa y se salva. Porque dice la Escritura: Todo el que crea en él, no será avergonzado. Porque no hay distinción entre judío y griego; porque el mismo Señor es Señor de todos, otorgando sus riquezas a todos los que lo invocan.
