I have always been fascinated by space. Over the last week we had a chance to follow the Artemis II mission that launched a rocket and four astronauts from earth and watch it travel to the moon and return back safe & sound. The Artemis launch was a first for multiple reasons. It was the deepest space flight for a human space craft traveling further from earth than any other occupied space craft. The space launch system was the most powerful rocket to successfully achieve orbit generating 8.8 million pounds of thrust. The astronauts saw for the first time space rocks striking the moon in real-time from a close range. Due to the trajectory of the space craft, the crew was able to view a total solar eclipse from behind the moon lasting almost an hour. One of the most striking observations by one of the astronauts, Christina Koch, described seeing earth as a “lifeboat hanging undisturbed in the universe” describing the vibrant color of earth against the blackness of space.
Sometimes distance can help us see things more clearly. We all can get caught up in the daily challenges of life and miss some of the important proof God has given us to know who He is and what He has done. We live on a planet that has been tailored to support human life. The astronauts needed a capsule with significant capabilities to survive the vacuum of space. The Orion spacecraft had to store oxygen and nitrogen to support the proper air mixture for the astronauts to breathe. A special chemical scrubbing technology called Amine Swing Beds was needed to remove the CO2 that accumulates from astronauts breathing. The spacecraft needed to carry 74 gallons of water in four tanks to support drinking water, food rehydration and medical needs. A system to recapture humidity from the crews breathing & sweat was needed to recapture and store wastewater. The crew module needed to provide 316 cubic feet of habitable space along with an internal climate system that can keep the internal temperature of the space craft between 70 and 75 degrees. The capsule even has lockers to protect them from the radiation from a possible solar flare if needed. Projecting the trajectory of the spacecraft is also precisely calculated so that the astronauts can navigate through the earth’s atmosphere and return safely back to earth. All this was needed to support a short 10-day mission to explore the moon.
In reflecting upon all these systems that are needed to support human life in space, it makes me appreciate how perfectly designed the earth is to support human life. Did you know that earth is one of two planets in our solar system where you can see space from the surface? We don’t need high tech equipment to see some of the most impressive sights in our universe. Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn are all visible without a telescope. Under a dark sky. our home galaxy, the Milky Way, appears as a faint, milky band of light stretching across the sky. This light is the collective glow of billions of stars too distant to see individually. The Andromeda Galaxy which we can see in very dark conditions, appears as a faint, “fuzzy” smudge in space. It is the most distant object visible to the human eye, located about 2.5 million light-years away from earth.
The Bible tells us The heavens tell of the glory of God; And their expanse declares the work of His hands. Psalm 19:1. “By the word of the Lord were the heavens made; and all the host of them by the breath of his mouth.” Psalm 33:6. Now some would say that the earth and universe just appeared, but I believe that the intelligent design shows us something different. The creation around us and its amazing design suggests to us that there is a designer. Did you know that just something as simple as gravity in its specific form is a central element in how stars and planets form and if it were slightly stronger, stars would burn out too quickly or never form in the first place. The nuclear force that holds atoms together is so complex, that a 2% change would result in a universe without the key elements that support life. Even our own DNA built by 3.2 billion “letters” in the human genome carry a level of information and complexity that points toward an intentional blueprint rather than random chance. And finally, when we look at earth, our home, there is no doubt that it was created by design. Our placement in the solar system is exactly perfect to support our climate. Any closer to the sun would evaporate our oceans, any further away would turn our water to ice. The earth’s core creates a magnetic field that acts as an invisible shield, deflecting solar winds and radiation that is lethal to life. Our atmosphere has just the right balance of oxygen and carbon dioxide to keep our planet warm without overheating. Even our ozone layer filters out harmful ultraviolet radiation that would damage our DNA and lead to a planet without life. There is no doubt that our planet, and the universe we inhabit was designed to support human life. The decision we all must make is who was the designer.

Siempre me ha fascinado el espacio. Durante la última semana, tuvimos la oportunidad de seguir la misión Artemis II, que lanzó un cohete con cuatro astronautas desde la Tierra, y de ver cómo viajaba a la Luna y regresaba sana y salva. El lanzamiento de Artemis fue pionero por varias razones. Fue el vuelo espacial humano que llegó más lejos en el espacio, alejándose de la Tierra más que cualquier otra nave tripulada. El Sistema de Lanzamiento Espacial (SLS) fue el cohete más potente en alcanzar la órbita con éxito, generando 8,8 millones de libras de empuje. Los astronautas vieron por primera vez, y a corta distancia, cómo rocas espaciales impactaban contra la Luna en tiempo real. Debido a la trayectoria de la nave, la tripulación pudo presenciar un eclipse solar total desde detrás de la Luna, el cual duró casi una hora. A veces, la distancia nos ayuda a ver las cosas con mayor claridad. Todos podemos dejarnos absorber por los desafíos cotidianos de la vida y pasar por alto algunas de las pruebas importantes que Dios nos ha dado para conocer quién es Él y qué ha hecho. Vivimos en un planeta diseñado a medida para sustentar la vida humana. Los astronautas necesitaban una cápsula con capacidades significativas para sobrevivir en el vacío del espacio. La nave espacial Orión debía almacenar oxígeno y nitrógeno para mantener la mezcla de aire adecuada para que los astronautas pudieran respirar. Se requirió una tecnología especial de depuración química, conocida como Amine Swing Beds (lechos de amina oscilantes), para eliminar el CO2 acumulado por la respiración de los astronautas. La nave debía transportar 74 galones de agua en cuatro tanques para cubrir las necesidades de consumo, rehidratación de alimentos y atención médica. Fue necesario implementar un sistema para recuperar la humedad proveniente de la respiración y el sudor de la tripulación, así como para recolectar y almacenar las aguas residuales. El módulo de la tripulación debía ofrecer 316 pies cúbicos de espacio habitable, además de un sistema de climatización interna capaz de mantener la temperatura de la nave entre 70 y 75 grados Fahrenheit. Asimismo, la trayectoria de la nave se calcula con gran precisión para permitir que los astronautas naveguen a través de la atmósfera terrestre y regresen a salvo a la Tierra. Todo esto era necesario para llevar a cabo una breve misión de 10 días
para explorar la Luna.
Al reflexionar sobre todos los sistemas necesarios para sustentar la vida humana en el espacio, valoro aún más
el diseño perfecto de la Tierra para albergar la vida humana. ¿Sabía que la Tierra es uno de los dos planetas de nuestro sistema solardesde cuya superficie se puede contemplar el espacio? No necesitamos equipos de alta tecnología para observar algunas de las vistas más impresionantes de nuestro universo. Mercurio, Venus, Marte, Júpiter y Saturno son visibles a simple vista. Bajo un cielo oscuro, nuestra galaxia, la Vía Láctea, aparece como una tenue banda de luz blanquecina que se extiende por el firmamento. Esta luz es el resplandor conjunto de miles de millones de estrellas demasiado lejanas para verse individualmente. La galaxia de Andrómeda, que podemos ver en condiciones de
gran oscuridad, se percibe como una mancha tenue y difusa en el espacio. Es el objeto más lejano visible para el ojo humano, situado a unos 2,5 millones de años luz de la Tierra.
La Biblia nos dice: «Los cielos cuentan la gloria de Dios, y el firmamento anuncia la obra de sus manos» (Salmo 19:1). «Por la palabra del Señor fueron hechos los cielos, y todo el ejército de ellos por el aliento de su boca» (Salmo 33:6). Algunos podrían decir que la Tierra y el universo simplemente aparecieron, pero yo creo que el diseño inteligente nos muestra algo distinto. La creación que nos rodea y su diseño asombroso sugieren la existencia de un diseñador. ¿Sabía que algo tan simple como la gravedad, en su forma específica, es un elemento clave en la formación de estrellas y planetas? Si fuera ligeramente más fuerte, las estrellas se consumirían demasiado rápido o ni siquiera llegarían a formarse. La fuerza nuclear que mantiene unidos a los átomos es tan compleja que una variación del 2 % daría lugar a un universo carente de los elementos esenciales para la vida. Incluso nuestro propio ADN, compuesto por 3200 millones de «letras» en el genoma humano, contiene un nivel de información y complejidad que apunta a un diseño intencional más que al azar. Por último, al observar la Tierra —nuestro hogar—, no cabe duda de que fue creada mediante un diseño. Nuestra ubicación en el sistema solar es perfecta para mantener nuestro clima: estar más cerca del Sol evaporaría nuestros océanos, mientras que estar más lejos convertiría el agua en hielo. El núcleo terrestre genera un campo magnético que actúa como un escudo invisible, desviando los vientos solares y la radiación letal para la vida. Nuestra atmósfera posee el equilibrio justo de oxígeno y dióxido de carbono para mantener el planeta cálido sin sobrecalentarlo. Incluso la capa de ozono filtra la radiación ultravioleta nociva que dañaría nuestro ADN y daría lugar a un planeta sin vida. No hay duda de que nuestro planeta y el universo que habitamos fueron diseñados para sustentar la vida humana. La decisión que todos debemos tomar es quién fue el diseñador.
