We live in a world that often glorifies outward appearances, fleeting successes, and the pursuit of material possessions. Whether it is the shows we watch on TV or the advertisements that bombard our phones and tablets, the world is constantly telling us that money, power and possessions are what is most important. Our world today looks a lot like the world that Jesus lived in 2,000 years ago. Although Jesus was brought up in a Jewish culture, the same problems we experience today, were issues in His culture as well. The Jewish leadership, particularly those within the priestly class, like the Sadducees, and members of the Sanhedrin, often came from wealthy and influential families. They held positions of power and had access to resources that were not available to the average person. In contrast, most of the Jewish population consisted of farmers, artisans, and laborers who lived very modest lives.
When Jesus started His ministry on earth, it was mostly the working-class people who chose to follow Him. Why was that? Jesus’s teachings and actions challenged the authority of the religious leaders, many of whom were wealthy and influential. Jesus’s ministry often centered on the marginalized: the poor, the sick, and those considered outcasts. He proclaimed that the last would be first and the first would be last, which threatened the established social order that benefited the wealthy. Rich people where accustomed to having high social standing, and Jesus’s teachings threatened that standing. Many wealthy people had a vested interest in maintaining the status quo. This included the political and religious structures of the time. Jesus’s teachings often threatened these structures and therefore threatened the power of the people that benefited from them.
So what character qualities do you think are most important to Jesus? I think the most important of all is love. Jesus emphasized love for God and love for one’s neighbor, even if they were enemies. “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the great and foremost commandment. The second is like it, you shall love your neighbor as yourself. On these two commandments depend the whole Law and the Prophets.” Matthew 22:37-40. This love was not just a feeling, but a demonstration of action and self-sacrifice. So what does this kind of love look like? It is the kind of love that Jesus showed to those around him as he sacrificed His life so that sins could be forgiven.
Another character quality important to Jesus is integrity. Integrity demands honesty and being true to one’s word. It requires us to say what we mean and mean what we say. Integrity requires us to be honest in communication, meaning that we should express our true thoughts and intentions when speaking and that you should follow through on what you say. “Let no unwholesome word come out of your mouth, but if there is any good word for edification according to the need of the moment, say that, so that it will give grace to those who hear.” Ephesians 4:29. One of the acts of Jesus that is most amazing to me was how much time he spent with those that needed His help. Jesus showed compassion through his actions, teachings, and miracles, particularly by healing the sick, feeding the hungry, offering comfort to the suffering, and demonstrating a deep concern for the well-being of others.
Forgiveness was the main reason God sent Jesus to live to pay the penalty for our sins. Jesus stressed the importance of forgiving others, even when they had wronged you. While sacrificing His life by dying on the cross, Jesus even reached out to another man who was hanging on the cross next to Him. Despite His pain and suffering, Jesus spoke to that man, forgave him of his sins, and told him that he would see Jesus in heaven. Jesus also taught us to be faithful. Jesus was faithful to God’s will, even when faced with immense suffering. This suffering was evident, when Jesus took the responsibility for our sins and for a moment, was separated from God and said “My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?” Matthew 27:46.
Jesus set a high standard, sacrificing His life for all who would believe in Him. Living a life like Jesus on our own is impossible, it is only through the power of the Holy Spirit that we can live like He did. Vivimos en un mundo que a menudo glorifica las apariencias, los éxitos fugaces y la búsqueda de posesiones materiales. Ya sea por los programas que vemos en televisión o por la publicidad que inunda nuestros teléfonos y tabletas, el mundo nos dice constantemente que el dinero, el poder y las posesiones son lo más importante. Nuestro mundo actual se parece mucho al que vivió Jesús hace 2000 años. Aunque Jesús se crio en una cultura judía, los mismos problemas que experimentamos hoy también existían en su cultura. Los líderes judíos, en particular los de la clase sacerdotal, como los saduceos y los miembros del Sanedrín, a menudo provenían de familias adineradas e influyentes. Ocupaban puestos de poder y tenían acceso a recursos inaccesibles para la persona promedio. En contraste, la mayoría de la población judía estaba compuesta por agricultores, artesanos y trabajadores que vivían vidas muy modestas.
Cuando Jesús comenzó su ministerio en la tierra, fueron principalmente las personas de clase trabajadora las que decidieron seguirlo. ¿Por qué? Las enseñanzas y acciones de Jesús desafiaron la autoridad de los líderes religiosos, muchos de los cuales eran ricos e influyentes. El ministerio de Jesús a menudo se centraba en los marginados: los pobres, los enfermos y aquellos considerados marginados. Proclamó que los últimos serían los primeros y los primeros, los últimos, lo que amenazaba el orden social establecido que beneficiaba a los ricos. Los ricos estaban acostumbrados a tener una posición social alta, y las enseñanzas de Jesús amenazaban esa posición. Muchos ricos tenían un interés personal en mantener el statu quo. Esto incluía las estructuras políticas y religiosas de la época. Las enseñanzas de Jesús a menudo amenazaban estas estructuras y, por lo tanto, el poder de quienes se beneficiaban de ellas.
Entonces, ¿qué cualidades de carácter crees que son las más importantes para Jesús? Creo que la más importante de todas es el amor. Jesús enfatizó el amor a Dios y al prójimo, incluso si eran enemigos. Amarás al Señor tu Dios con todo tu corazón, con toda tu alma y con toda tu mente. Este es el gran mandamiento y el primero. El segundo es semejante: Amarás a tu prójimo como a ti mismo. De estos dos mandamientos dependen toda la ley y los profetas. Mateo 22:37-40. Este amor no era solo un sentimiento, sino una demostración de acción y abnegación. ¿Cómo se manifiesta entonces este tipo de amor? Es el tipo de amor que Jesús mostró a quienes lo rodeaban al sacrificar su vida para que los pecados fueran perdonados.
Otra cualidad de carácter importante para Jesús es la integridad. La integridad exige honestidad y ser fiel a la palabra. Requiere que digamos lo que queremos decir y que sintamos lo que decimos. La integridad requiere que seamos honestos en la comunicación, lo que significa que debemos expresar nuestros verdaderos pensamientos e intenciones al hablar y que debemos ser consecuentes con lo que decimos. “Ninguna palabra mala salga de vuestra boca; más bien, si hay alguna buena palabra para edificación, según la necesidad del momento, habladla, para que dé gracia a los que oyen.” Efesios 4:29. Uno de los actos de Jesús que más me asombra fue el tiempo que dedicó a quienes necesitaban su ayuda. Jesús mostró compasión a través de sus acciones, enseñanzas y milagros, particularmente sanando a los enfermos, alimentando a los hambrientos, ofreciendo consuelo a los que sufrían y demostrando una profunda preocupación por el bienestar de los demás.
El perdón fue la razón principal por la que Dios envió a Jesús a vivir para pagar la pena por nuestros pecados. Jesús enfatizó la importancia de perdonar a los demás, incluso cuando nos han hecho daño. Al sacrificar su vida al morir en la cruz, Jesús incluso se acercó a otro hombre que colgaba en la cruz junto a él. A pesar de su dolor y sufrimiento, Jesús le habló, le perdonó sus pecados y le dijo que lo vería en el cielo. Jesús también nos enseñó a ser fieles. Jesús fue fiel a la voluntad de Dios, incluso al enfrentar un inmenso sufrimiento. Este sufrimiento fue evidente cuando Jesús asumió la responsabilidad de nuestros pecados y, por un momento, se separó de Dios y dijo: «Dios mío, Dios mío, ¿por qué me has desamparado?» (Mateo 27:46).
Jesús estableció un estándar alto al sacrificar su vida por todos los que creerían en él. Vivir una vida como la de Jesús por nuestra cuenta es imposible; solo mediante el poder del Espíritu Santo podemos vivir como él.
