Weekly Message: The Teachings of Jesus – Beatitudes & The Narrow Gate

Wherever Jesus went, there was typically a crowd of people that would gather to hear his teaching. One day early in his ministry, a large crowd was following Jesus as he made his way up on a mountain so that he could speak to the people below. This famous teaching is known as the Beatitudes and Jesus identifies what traits, qualities, or conditions in people that God considers blessed. This teaching was revolutionary and everyone listening were amazed because what Jesus taught was almost exactly the opposite of the social and political systems that were in place during that time. At that time, the Roman empire was in control of Israel and the Roman government established local kings to rule that were loyal to Caesar. Under these kings, the Jewish high priesthood was for sale to the highest bidder and the pagan religious systems of the Roman empire were in direct conflict with Judaism. The chief priests and rabbis largely made up the upper class. The Pharisees and Sadducees were known throughout that time to be hypocrites and altered the Law of Moses to suit their selfish motives. These leaders lacked humility, exalted themselves and looked down upon others. They knew the commandments but did not apply them appropriately and were a bad influence on others. With that as context, here are some key parts of Jesus’ teaching on the Beatitudes.
“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted. Blessed are the gentle, for they will inherit the earth. Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be satisfied. Blessed are the merciful, for they will receive mercy. Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God. Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called sons of God. “Blessed are those who have been persecuted for the sake of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are you when people insult you and persecute you, and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of Me.” Matthew 5:3-11.
In these few short sentences, Jesus describes what is important in God’s kingdom and draws a sharp contrast with what the values were at that time. Jesus says that those who are poor in spirit, theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Jesus was not talking about someone who is depressed, rather someone who knows that there is nothing that they can do on their own to get them into heaven. It is those that recognize their need for a savior that will inherit the kingdom. When we hear the word mourn, we often think about the feelings we have when we lose a close friend or relative. Those who mourn in this context refers to those that recognize their sin and feel their brokenness. It is those that respond in this way that will experience the forgiveness of God. For those who are gentle (not weak, gentleness is strength under control) they will inherit the earth. Those that are desperate to do the will of God will long for nothing. Those who forgive will be forgiven, those who have pure motives will see God, those that bring peace will be children of God. Those that are persecuted or are insulted for their belief in Jesus will have a great reward in heaven. It is not greatness in the eyes of man that is valued by God, it is the traits and qualities that are identified here that are important to God.
After listing all these qualities, Jesus then says “Enter through the narrow gate; for the gate is wide and the way is broad that leads to destruction, and there are many who enter through it. For the gate is narrow and the way is constricted that leads to life, and there are few who find it.” Jesus is the narrow gate. Jesus is saying here that living like the world is the wide gate and many will follow that path. It is only by belief in Jesus that we can enter through the narrow gate and be granted entrance into God’s Kingdom. As Jesus said: “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” John 14:6.

Celebraremos la Pascua el domingo 20 de abril con un servicio al amanecer a partir de las 6:45 a. m. en la playa del resort Coconut Cove, en el kilómetro 85 de Windley Key. ¡Únase a nosotros para celebrar a Jesús, nuestro Señor y Salvador resucitado!
Dondequiera que Jesús iba, solía haber una multitud que se reunía para escuchar sus enseñanzas. Un día, al principio de su ministerio, una gran multitud seguía a Jesús mientras subía a una montaña para poder hablar con la gente que estaba abajo. Esta famosa enseñanza se conoce como las Bienaventuranzas, y Jesús identifica los rasgos, cualidades o condiciones en las personas que Dios considera benditas. Esta enseñanza fue revolucionaria y todos los que escuchaban quedaron asombrados porque lo que Jesús enseñaba era casi exactamente lo opuesto a los sistemas sociales y políticos vigentes en esa época. En ese entonces, el Imperio Romano controlaba Israel y el gobierno romano establecía reyes locales leales al César. Bajo estos reyes, el sumo sacerdocio judío estaba a la venta al mejor postor y los sistemas religiosos paganos del Imperio romano entraban en conflicto directo con el judaísmo. Los sumos sacerdotes y rabinos constituían en gran medida la clase alta. Durante aquella época, los fariseos y saduceos eran conocidos por su hipocresía y por alterar la Ley de Moisés para favorecer sus intereses egoístas. Estos líderes carecían de humildad, se exaltaban a sí mismos y menospreciaban a los demás. Conocían los mandamientos, pero no los aplicaban adecuadamente y eran una mala influencia. Con esto como contexto, aquí se presentan algunos puntos clave de la enseñanza de Jesús sobre las Bienaventuranzas. Bienaventurados los pobres de espíritu, porque de ellos es el reino de los cielos. Bienaventurados los que lloran, porque ellos serán consolados. Bienaventurados los mansos, porque ellos heredarán la tierra. Bienaventurados los que tienen hambre y sed de justicia, porque ellos serán saciados. Bienaventurados los misericordiosos, porque ellos alcanzarán misericordia. Bienaventurados los de limpio corazón, porque ellos verán a Dios. Bienaventurados los pacificadores, porque ellos serán llamados hijos de Dios. Bienaventurados los que han sido perseguidos por causa de la justicia, porque de ellos es el reino de los cielos. Bienaventurados seréis cuando os insulten y os persigan, y digan toda clase de mal contra vosotros falsamente por mi causa. Mateo 5:3-11.
En estas breves frases, Jesús describe lo importante en el reino de Dios y establece un marcado contraste con los valores de aquella época. Jesús dice que de los pobres de espíritu es el reino de los cielos.
Jesús no se refería a alguien deprimido, sino a alguien que sabe que no puede hacer nada por sí solo para entrar al cielo. Son aquellos que reconocen su necesidad de un salvador los que heredarán el reino. Cuando escuchamos la palabra llorar, a menudo pensamos en los sentimientos que tenemos cuando perdemos a un amigo cercano o a un familiar. Quienes lloran en este contexto se refieren a quienes reconocen su pecado y sienten su quebrantamiento. Son aquellos que responden de esta manera los que experimentarán el perdón de Dios. Los que son mansos (no débiles, la mansedumbre es fuerza bajo control) heredarán la tierra. Aquellos que están desesperados por hacer la voluntad de Dios no anhelarán nada. Los que perdonan serán perdonados, los que tienen motivos puros verán a Dios, los que Los que traigan paz serán hijos de Dios. Quienes sean perseguidos o insultados por creer en Jesús recibirán una gran recompensa en el cielo. Dios no valora la grandeza a los ojos del hombre, sino los rasgos y cualidades que se identifican aquí, los cuales son importantes para Él.
Después de enumerar todas estas cualidades, Jesús dice: «Entren por la puerta estrecha; porque ancha es la puerta y espacioso el camino que lleva a la perdición, y muchos son los que entran por ella. Porque estrecha es la puerta y angosto el camino que lleva a la vida, y pocos son los que la hallan». Jesús es la puerta estrecha. Jesús dice aquí que vivir como el mundo es la puerta ancha y muchos seguirán ese camino. Solo creyendo en Jesús podemos entrar por la puerta estrecha y acceder al Reino de Dios. Como dijo Jesús: «Yo soy el camino, la verdad y la vida; nadie viene al Padre sino por mí» (Juan 14:6).
