Weekly Message: Death is Defeated

One of my most favorite times of year is the season of spring. We don’t see too many changes here in South Florida but the change that happens in the northern part of the United States is amazing. I spent 30 years raising my family near Atlanta, which has one of the most colorful transformations as flowers bloom and the dogwood trees dot the skyline. This amazing re-birth also coincides with the celebration of Easter, one of the more important events on the Christian calendar. Why do Christians celebrate Easter and what can we learn from the bible about why this is such an important holiday on the Christian calendar?
Death is something we all must work through and ultimately an experience all of us will see. There has never been a human being who didn’t die, so it is something all of us must deal with. Back when Jesus was alive, there was no single, monolithic view on the afterlife. Different groups held varying perspectives on whether there was an afterlife and what happened to us once our life here on earth was over. Jesus was very clear about what He thought about our life after death and this view of the afterlife has dominated our thinking about what happens to us after we die. Jesus taught that death is not the end but a transition to eternal life for those who believe in Him. He emphasized the resurrection of the dead and the promise of a heavenly existence for those that believe in Him. “I am the good shepherd, and I know My own and My own know Me, even as the Father knows Me and I know the Father; and I lay down My life for the sheep.” John 10:14-15. “I am the resurrection and the life; he who believes in Me will live even if he dies, and everyone who lives and believes in Me will never die.” John 11:25-26.
Jesus spoke of hell more than anyone else in the Bible. He referred to it as a place of “outer darkness” where “there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth”. Jesus also refers to hell as a “fiery furnace” where lawbreakers will be thrown at the end of the age when he returns. “The Son of Man will send his angels, and they will gather out of his kingdom all causes of sin and all lawbreakers and throw them into the fiery furnace. In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth” Matthew 13:41–42. Humans can’t be in God’s presence without the forgiveness that comes through faith in Jesus.
Jesus, while on earth, claimed the authority to forgive sins. This claim was deeply controversial and considered blasphemous by many Jews, as they understood it to be an act that only God could perform. Christians believe that Jesus is the Son of God, and in fact, is God himself in human form. If Jesus is indeed God, then his authority to forgive sins is inherent in his very nature. Jesus’s death on the cross was a payment for the sins of those who believe in Him. Through his death, Jesus paid the penalty for sin, satisfying God’s justice and making forgiveness possible. So, is forgiveness offered to everyone? Many I talk with say “I have been a good person, that is all that is necessary to go to heaven when you die.” Although many people may believe this, it is not what Jesus taught when he was here. Here are some quotes of what He had to say.
First, Jesus said that He was the gate keeper. “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father except through Me.” John 14:6. Jesus also said that not everyone will be granted admittance into heaven. “On that day many will say to me, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and cast out demons in your name, and do many mighty works in your name?’ And then will I declare to them, I never knew you; depart from me, you workers of lawlessness.” Matthew 7:21-23. “For by grace you have been saved through faith; and this is not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; not a result of works, so that no one may boast.” Ephesians 2:8-9.
God has given us the gift of forgiveness and a future in heaven when we believe that Jesus is His son. Jesus paid the debt of our sin by living a holy life, free from sin, and sacrificing His life on the cross. Jesus has defeated death for those who believe that he is the Christ. Una de mis épocas favoritas del año es la primavera. No vemos muchos cambios aquí en el sur de Florida, pero el cambio que ocurre en el norte de Estados Unidos es asombroso. Pasé 30 años criando a mi familia cerca de Atlanta, ciudad que experimenta una de las transformaciones más coloridas: las flores florecen y los cornejos adornan el horizonte. Este asombroso renacimiento también coincide con la celebración de la Pascua, uno de los eventos más importantes del calendario cristiano. ¿Por qué los cristianos celebran la Pascua y qué podemos aprender de la Biblia sobre por qué es una festividad tan importante en el calendario cristiano?
La muerte es algo que todos debemos superar y, en última instancia, una experiencia que todos viviremos. Nunca ha habido un ser humano que no haya muerto, así que es algo con lo que todos debemos lidiar. En la época de Jesús, no existía una visión única y monolítica sobre el más allá. Diferentes grupos tenían perspectivas diversas sobre si existía una vida después de la muerte y qué nos sucedía una vez que nuestra vida aquí en la tierra terminaba. Jesús fue muy claro sobre su pensamiento sobre nuestra vida después de la muerte, y esta perspectiva ha dominado nuestra reflexión sobre lo que nos sucede después de morir. Jesús enseñó que la muerte no es el fin, sino una transición a la vida eterna para quienes creen en él. Hizo hincapié en la resurrección de los muertos y en la promesa de una existencia celestial para quienes creen en él. «Yo soy el buen pastor, y conozco a mis ovejas, y las mías me conocen a mí, como el Padre me conoce a mí, y yo conozco al Padre; y doy mi vida por las ovejas» (Juan 10:14-15). «Yo soy la resurrección y la vida; el que cree en mí, aunque muera, vivirá; y todo aquel que vive y cree en mí, no morirá eternamente» (Juan 11:25-26).
Jesús habló del infierno más que nadie en la Biblia. Se refirió a él como un lugar de «tinieblas de afuera» donde «habrá llanto y crujir de dientes». Jesús también se refiere al infierno como un “horno de fuego” donde los transgresores serán arrojados al final de los tiempos, cuando él regrese. “El Hijo del Hombre enviará a sus ángeles, y recogerán de su reino a todos los que hacen pecado y a los transgresores de la ley, y los arrojarán al horno de fuego. Allí será el llanto y el crujir de dientes” (Mateo 13:41-42). Los seres humanos no pueden estar en la presencia de Dios sin el perdón que viene por la fe en Jesús.
Jesús, mientras estuvo en la tierra, afirmó tener la autoridad para perdonar pecados. Esta afirmación fue profundamente controvertida y considerada blasfema por muchos judíos, ya que la entendían como un acto que solo Dios podía realizar. Los cristianos creen que Jesús es el Hijo de Dios y, de hecho, es Dios mismo en forma humana. Si Jesús es realmente Dios, entonces su autoridad para perdonar pecados es inherente a su propia naturaleza. La muerte de Jesús en la cruz fue el pago por los pecados de quienes creen en él. Mediante su muerte, Jesús pagó la pena del pecado, satisfaciendo la justicia de Dios y haciendo posible el perdón. Entonces, ¿se ofrece el perdón a todos? Muchas personas con las que hablo dicen: “He sido una buena persona, eso es todo lo que se necesita para ir al cielo al morir”. Aunque muchos crean esto, no es lo que Jesús enseñó cuando estuvo aquí. Aquí hay algunas citas de lo que dijo.
Primero, Jesús dijo que Él era el portero. “Yo soy el camino, la verdad y la vida; nadie viene al Padre sino por mí” (Juan 14:6). Jesús también dijo que no todos recibirán la entrada al cielo. “Muchos me dirán en aquel día: ‘Señor, Señor, ¿no profetizamos en tu nombre, y en tu nombre echamos fuera demonios, y en tu nombre hicimos muchos milagros?’. Y entonces les declararé: “Jamás os conocí; apartaos de mí, hacedores de maldad” (Mateo 7:21-23). “Porque por gracia sois salvos por medio de la fe; y esto no de vosotros, sino que es don de Dios; no por obras, para que nadie se gloríe.” Efesios 2:8-9.
Dios nos ha dado el don del perdón y un futuro en el cielo cuando creemos que Jesús es su hijo. Jesús pagó la deuda de nuestros pecados viviendo una vida santa, libre de pecado, y sacrificando su vida en la cruz. Jesús venció a la muerte por quienes creen que él es el Cristo.
