Weekly Message: The Power Behind the Purpose

Have you ever been out fishing in the Gulf Stream? The western edge of the current typically flows anywhere from 10 to 20 miles offshore from Islamorada, roughly tracking the drop-off of the continental shelf. Driven by trade winds and the squeezing effect of the narrow Straits of Florida, this is one of the fastest currents in the world with a speed between 3 and 5 miles per hour. About 15 miles offshore sits the Islamorada Hump. This underwater mountain rises up from the ocean floor to within 300 feet of the surface creating a massive baitfish location that fuels an incredible sport fishing environment. Sometimes this water is so clear that you can see hundreds of feet below your boat. When you are floating in the Gulf Stream, it can seem completely motionless, the water moving the same speed as your boat. It is only when you look at your GPS that you realize you are actually moving quite quickly to the north. It is amazing how much of our world is driven by a current we cannot see.
Although not a perfect comparison to the Gulf Stream, for believers in Jesus we have been blessed with the Holy Spirit who interacts with us on a daily basis. Like the Gulf Stream, the Holy Spirit has an incredible effect on our lives, but because we can’t see Him, it can appear that He is not really there. The Holy Spirit is everywhere and is not bound by a physical body like we are. We know that God exists in three persons, the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit and the Spirit has the complete and deepest thoughts of God. “…the Spirit searches all things, even the depths of God.” 1 Corinthians 2:10. We know that the Spirit of God has no beginning and no end, He existed before all of creation. “Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.” Genesis 1:2. One of the Spirit’s main reasons for interacting with us is to be a comforter, and personal guide to help us understand and follow God’s word. “But the Helper, the Holy Spirit whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and remind you of all that I said to you.” John 14:26.
So, you might ask what evidence do we have that the Holy Spirit exists? If we study the Bible, there are some amazing examples of the Holy Spirit in the lives of the Disciples. “When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.” Acts 2:1-4. Most of the disciples were simple fishermen, but once filled with the Holy Spirit, these men were transformed in their ability to speak to others and share the good news of the Gospel. Peter and John were arrested and brought before the high-ranking religious rulers to explain by what power they healed a lame man. “Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them: ‘Rulers and elders of the people! If we are being called to account today for an act of kindness shown to a man who was lame and are being asked how he was healed, then know this, you and all the people of Israel: It is by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified but whom God raised from the dead, that this man stands before you healed.Jesus is the stone you builders rejected, which has become the cornerstone.Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved.’ When they saw the courage of Peter and John and realized that they were unschooled, ordinary men, they were astonished and they took note that these men had been with Jesus.” Acts 4:8-13.
So how can we experience the Holy Spirit? Well first we need to believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God and that He paid the price of our sins by giving his life on the cross. Like the Gulf Stream, we can’t actually see the Holy Spirit in action but we can experience His influence. We live in a loud world with many distractions. God tells us that the Holy Spirit will communicate with us in a “still small voice.” Reading God’s word can help us center our thinking on who God is and what He is doing in our lives. The Holy Spirit can help us to understand parts of scripture that may seem difficult. Quiet time in prayer can also give us the opportunity to talk with God and ask for His wisdom when we are in challenging situations. We can talk to the Holy Spirit through our day as we experience challenges or see opportunities. The Holy Spirit can frequently nudge us to act—to check in on a friend, to be unexpectedly generous, or to heal a broken relationship. The more we become aware of His presence, the better we will become at listening and acknowledging the actions He may want us to take. I have also had the experience where the Holy Spirit has helped me in situations to share the right words with someone in need. Ultimately, experiencing the Holy Spirit is a habit of awareness. Like tuning the TV to a specific channel, the signal is always being broadcast; we simply need to adjust our internal dial to hear it clearly.

¿Alguna vez ha salido a pescar en la Corriente del Golfo? El borde occidental de esta corriente suele fluir a una distancia de entre 10 y 20 millas de la costa de Islamorada, siguiendo aproximadamente el desnivel de la plataforma continental. Impulsada por los vientos alisios y el efecto de compresión de los estrechos de Florida —que son bastante angostos—, esta es una de las corrientes más rápidas del mundo, alcanzando velocidades de entre 3 y 5 millas por hora. A unas 15 millas de la costa se encuentra la «Isla de Islamorada» (Islamorada Hump). Esta montaña submarina se eleva desde el lecho oceánico hasta situarse a menos de 300 pies de la superficie, creando un enorme punto de concentración de peces carnada que propicia un entorno increíble para la pesca deportiva. A veces, el agua es tan transparente que se puede ver a cientos de pies de profundidad bajo la embarcación. Cuando uno se encuentra a la deriva en la Corriente del Golfo, puede parecer que todo está completamente inmóvil, ya que el agua se desplaza a la misma velocidad que el barco. Es solo al consultar el GPS cuando uno se da cuenta de que, en realidad, se está desplazando con bastante rapidez hacia el norte. Resulta asombroso ver cuánto de nuestro mundo es impulsado por una corriente que no podemos ver.
Aunque no sea una comparación perfecta con la Corriente del Golfo, los creyentes en Jesús hemos sido bendecidos con el Espíritu Santo, quien interactúa con nosotros a diario. Al igual que la Corriente del Golfo, el Espíritu Santo ejerce un efecto increíble en nuestras vidas; sin embargo, dado que no podemos verlo, podría parecer que en realidad no está presente. El Espíritu Santo se encuentra en todas partes y no está limitado por un cuerpo físico, como lo estamos nosotros. Sabemos que Dios existe en tres personas —el Padre, el Hijo y el Espíritu Santo— y que el Espíritu posee los pensamientos más completos y profundos de Dios. «…el Espíritu escudriña todas las cosas, incluso las profundidades de Dios». 1 Corintios 2:10. Sabemos que el Espíritu de Dios no tiene principio ni fin; Él existía antes de toda la creación. «La tierra estaba sin forma y vacía, la oscuridad cubría la superficie del abismo, y el Espíritu de Dios se movía sobre las aguas». Génesis 1:2. Una de las razones principales por las que el Espíritu interactúa con nosotros es para actuar como Consolador y guía personal, ayudándonos a comprender y seguir la palabra de Dios. «Pero el Consolador, el Espíritu Santo, a quien el Padre enviará en mi nombre, Él les enseñará todas las cosas y les recordará todo lo que les he dicho». Juan 14:26.
Así pues, tal vez te preguntes: ¿qué pruebas tenemos de que el Espíritu Santo existe? Si estudiamos la Biblia, encontramos algunos ejemplos asombrosos de la presencia del Espíritu Santo en las vidas de los discípulos. «Cuando llegó el día de Pentecostés, estaban todos juntos en un mismo lugar. De repente, vino del cielo un sonido como el de un viento impetuoso y violento, y llenó toda la casa donde estaban sentados. Vieron lo que parecían ser lenguas de fuego que se separaron y se posaron sobre cada uno de ellos. Todos fueron llenos del Espíritu Santo y comenzaron a hablar en otras lenguas, según el Espíritu les concedía expresarse». Hechos 2:1-4. La mayoría de los discípulos eran sencillos pescadores; sin embargo, una vez llenos del Espíritu Santo, estos hombres se transformaron en su capacidad para hablar a los demás y compartir las buenas nuevas del Evangelio. Pedro y Juan fueron arrestados y llevados ante los altos dignatarios religiosos para explicar con qué poder habían sanado a un hombre cojo. «Entonces Pedro, lleno del Espíritu Santo, les dijo: “¡Gobernantes y ancianos del pueblo! Si hoy se nos pide rendir cuentas por un acto de bondad mostrado a un hombre que estaba cojo, y se nos pregunta cómo fue sanado, sepan esto, ustedes y todo el pueblo de Israel: Es por el nombre de Jesucristo de Nazaret —a quien ustedes crucificaron, pero a quien Dios resucitó de entre los muertos— que este hombre se presenta hoy ante ustedes sano. Jesús es la piedra que ustedes, los constructores, rechazaron, la cual se ha convertido en la piedra angular. La salvación no se encuentra en ningún otro, pues no hay otro nombre bajo el cielo, dado a la humanidad, por el cual debamos ser salvos”. Al ver la valentía de Pedro y de Juan, y al darse cuenta de que eran hombres comunes y sin instrucción, se quedaron asombrados y reconocieron que estos hombres habían estado con Jesús». Hechos 4:8-13.
Entonces, ¿cómo podemos experimentar al Espíritu Santo? Bueno, primero necesitamos creer que Jesucristo es el Hijo de Dios y que Él pagó el precio de nuestros pecados al entregar su vida en la cruz. Al igual que la Corriente del Golfo, en realidad no podemos ver al Espíritu Santo en acción, pero sí podemos experimentar su influencia. Vivimos en un mundo ruidoso, lleno de distracciones. Dios nos dice que el Espíritu Santo se comunicará con nosotros a través de una «voz suave y apacible». Leer la Palabra de Dios puede ayudarnos a centrar nuestros pensamientos en quién es Dios y en lo que Él está haciendo en nuestras vidas. El Espíritu Santo puede ayudarnos a comprender pasajes de las Escrituras que tal vez nos parezcan difíciles. Un tiempo de quietud en oración también nos brinda la oportunidad de hablar con Dios y pedirle su sabiduría cuando nos enfrentamos a situaciones desafiantes. Podemos hablar con el Espíritu Santo a lo largo del día, a medida que experimentamos desafíos o vislumbramos oportunidades. Con frecuencia, el Espíritu Santo puede impulsarnos a actuar: a contactar a un amigo, a ser generosos de manera inesperada o a sanar una relación rota. Cuanto más conscientes seamos de su presencia, mejor sabremos escuchar y reconocer las acciones que Él desea que emprendamos. También he tenido la experiencia de que el Espíritu Santo me ha ayudado, en ciertas situaciones, a compartir las palabras precisas con alguien que lo necesitaba. En última instancia, experimentar al Espíritu Santo es un hábito de conciencia. Al igual que sintonizar el televisor en un canal específico, la señal se está transmitiendo constantemente; simplemente necesitamos ajustar nuestro dial interno para escucharla con claridad.
