Weekly Message: The Power of God

We live in a world where power is sought after and then used to influence things in both good and bad ways. Human history has many examples of power being used to hurt one or a group of people, placing the rights and freedoms of one group over another. Our laws and law enforcement are one of the ways that our society tries to balance the rights of all people so that we can live in a society without chaos.  Like any system that humans introduce, even the United States has many places where the rights of one group of people are favored over the rights of another group of people. I believe the only place where we can find true justice is within the Kingdom of God and that is only possible because God is the one that wills it to happen.

So, what do we know about the power of God? We know from the bible that God is the creator of all things, and His power is unlimited and absolute.  The ultimate demonstration of this power is the creation of our universe when none of it existed. Not only did God create it, but He did it by just speaking it into existence. “By the word of the Lord the heavens were made, And by the breath of His mouth all their lights. He gathers the waters of the sea together as a heap; He puts the depths in storehouses. Let all the earth fear the Lord; Let all the inhabitants of the world stand in awe of Him. For He spoke, and it was done; He commanded, and it stood firm.” Psalm 33:6-9. God’s power is consistent with the attributes of His character and in His holiness and truth. God will not do things that would violate His own character, such as lying or being unjust.

As Christian’s, we believe that God’s power not only created the universe but sustains it at every moment. If God withdrew His power, existence itself would collapse. We have seen God’s power through the life of Jesus Christ, His Son, as it was displayed through miracles like healing the sick, calming storms, and raising the dead. God showed His power over life and death through the resurrection of Jesus after He was killed by the Roman leaders. God’s power is not just distant and external; it is also intended to be active in the lives of His followers through the Holy Spirit.  Jesus promised his followers they would receive power from the Holy Spirit to enable them to be His witnesses in the world “you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be My witnesses both in Jerusalem and in all Judea, and Samaria, and as far as the remotest part of the earth.” Acts 1:8. God’s power is infinite, absolute, creative, sustaining, and actively at work in creation and in the lives of people, always operating in perfect harmony with His other attributes, such as love, holiness, and wisdom. God knows all that has happened, all that is happening now, and all that will happen. This includes future events of which many are revealed in the the book of Revelations. Because God is all-knowing, Christians believe that His plans and counsel are perfectly wise and trustworthy. There are no surprises for God, and no problem is too complex for Him to solve.

Despite the evidence and proof that does exist about God, there are many who have chosen not to believe in Him. Generally, people have challenges in three areas: doctrine & beliefs, the reliability of the bible, and the actions & beliefs of Jesus followers. One of the most significant arguments is how and why an all-powerful God would allow evil & suffering in our world. Christians believe that God created humans with genuine free will and the ability to make real moral choices. Love and a meaningful relationship with God or one another require the freedom to choose good or evil. If God were to coercively prevent all evil actions, humans would essentially be robots, incapable of genuine love, and morality. God allows the possibility of evil as a necessary condition for the greater good of freely chosen love. Forcing me to love someone is not the same as choosing to love someone. Many will say that there are contradictions in the bible both in discrepancies between the Gospel accounts and the order of the events that took place. A more careful study reveals that these contradictions are minor and can be reconciled just like multiple people giving accounts of a traffic accident. Finally, there are some that would point to the actions and beliefs of Jesus followers as a reason not to believe. Most would point out that while Christians preach love, humility and forgiveness, many practice judgement, arrogance and exclusion. We need to remember that Christianity is based on the character of Jesus Christ, not the perfection of His followers. The reason we need Jesus is that none of us can live a perfect life, and we need God’s forgiveness.  That is why we need to have faith in Jesus. Vivimos en un mundo donde se busca el poder y se usa para influir en las cosas, tanto para bien como para mal. La historia de la humanidad está repleta de ejemplos de cómo el poder se ha usado para perjudicar a una persona o a un grupo, priorizando los derechos y libertades de unos sobre los de otros. Nuestras leyes y las fuerzas del orden son una de las maneras en que nuestra sociedad intenta equilibrar los derechos de todas las personas para que podamos vivir en una sociedad sin caos. Como en cualquier sistema creado por el ser humano, incluso en Estados Unidos existen muchos ámbitos donde se favorecen los derechos de un grupo de personas sobre los de otro. Creo que el único lugar donde podemos encontrar verdadera justicia es en el Reino de Dios, y esto solo es posible porque Dios es quien lo permite.

Entonces, ¿qué sabemos del poder de Dios? Sabemos por la Biblia que Dios es el creador de todas las cosas, y su poder es ilimitado y absoluto. La máxima demostración de este poder es la creación de nuestro universo cuando nada de él existía. Dios no solo lo creó, sino que lo hizo con tan solo su palabra. «Por la palabra del Señor fueron hechos los cielos, y por el aliento de su boca, todas sus luces. Él junta las aguas del mar como en un montón; guarda los abismos en depósitos. ¡Tema toda la tierra al Señor! ¡Témanle todos los habitantes del mundo! Porque él habló, y fue hecho; él mandó, y existió.» Salmo 33:6-9. El poder de Dios es coherente con los atributos de su carácter, su santidad y su verdad. Dios no haría nada que violara su propia naturaleza, como mentir o ser injusto.

Como cristianos, creemos que el poder de Dios no solo creó el universo, sino que lo sostiene en todo momento. Si Dios retirara su poder, la existencia misma colapsaría. Hemos visto el poder de Dios a través de la vida de Jesucristo, su Hijo, manifestado en milagros como la sanación de los enfermos, la calma de las tormentas y la resurrección de los muertos. Dios demostró su poder sobre la vida y la muerte mediante la resurrección de Jesús después de ser asesinado por los líderes romanos. El poder de Dios no es solo distante y externo; también está destinado a actuar en la vida de sus seguidores a través del Espíritu Santo. Jesús les prometió que recibirían poder del Espíritu Santo para capacitarlos a ser sus testigos en el mundo: «Recibiréis poder cuando haya venido sobre vosotros el Espíritu Santo; y me seréis testigos en Jerusalén, en toda Judea, en Samaria y hasta los confines de la tierra» (Hechos 1:8). El poder de Dios es infinito, absoluto, creativo, sustentador y actúa activamente en la creación y en la vida de las personas, siempre en perfecta armonía con sus demás atributos, como el amor, la santidad y la sabiduría. Dios sabe todo lo que ha sucedido, todo lo que sucede ahora y todo lo que sucederá. Esto incluye eventos futuros, muchos de los cuales se revelan en el libro del Apocalipsis. Debido a que Dios es omnisciente, los cristianos creen que sus planes y consejos son perfectamente sabios y dignos de confianza. Para Dios no hay sorpresas, y ningún problema es demasiado complejo para que Él lo resuelva.

A pesar de las evidencias y pruebas existentes sobre Dios, muchos han optado por no creer en Él. Generalmente, las personas enfrentan desafíos en tres áreas: doctrina y creencias, la fiabilidad de la Biblia y las acciones y creencias de los seguidores de Jesús. Uno de los argumentos más importantes es cómo y por qué un Dios todopoderoso permitiría el mal y el sufrimiento en nuestro mundo. Los cristianos creen que Dios creó a los seres humanos con auténtico libre albedrío y la capacidad de tomar decisiones morales reales. El amor y una relación significativa con Dios o con los demás requieren la libertad de elegir entre el bien y el mal. Si Dios impidiera coercitivamente todas las acciones malvadas, los seres humanos serían esencialmente autómatas, incapaces de amar de verdad y de tener moralidad. Dios permite la posibilidad del mal como condición necesaria para el bien mayor del amor libremente elegido. Obligarme a amar a alguien no es lo mismo que elegir amar a alguien.

Muchos dirán que existen contradicciones en la Biblia, tanto en las discrepancias entre los relatos de los Evangelios como en el orden de los acontecimientos. Un estudio más detallado revela que estas contradicciones son menores y pueden reconciliarse, al igual que los relatos de varias personas sobre un accidente de tráfico. Finalmente, algunos señalan las acciones y creencias de los seguidores de Jesús como motivo para no creer. La mayoría argumenta que, si bien los cristianos predican el amor, la humildad y el perdón, muchos practican el juicio, la arrogancia y la exclusión. Debemos recordar que el cristianismo se basa en el carácter de Jesucristo, no en la perfección de sus seguidores. Necesitamos a Jesús porque ninguno de nosotros puede vivir una vida perfecta y necesitamos el perdón de Dios. Por eso necesitamos tener fe en Jesús.
