Weekly Message: The Tyranny of the Urgent

Last week we talked about it being hard to believe in things we can’t see, touch, or feel. Despite that challenge, there are things we can’t experience with our senses that we very much believe in like wifi, cell phone signals, x-rays and viruses like Covid-19. The spiritual world is something we can’t see but many of us believe that there is a God. “For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse.” Romans 1:20. Among other reasons, the bible tells us that the earth, universe and everything in it reflects the power and divine nature of our God. As we look around, we also see the signs of the spiritual battle that Paul talks about in Ephesians 6. “For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. Therefore, take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm.” From politics to ethics to religion to education, Paul tells us to put on the whole armor of God so that we can stand firm in what He has taught us.
We covered the first 3 components of our spiritual armor last week: the Belt of Truth, Breastplate of Righteousness, and the Shoes of the Gospel. The remaining 3 are the Shield of Faith, the Helmet of Salvation, and the Sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. Ephesians 6:17-18. Of all the defensive armor, it was the shield that allowed the warrior to deflect the blows of the enemy away from the body. Paul goes on to tell us “In all circumstances take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one.” Our faith enables us to have complete trust in God’s power and protection with the knowledge that He is working out all things for good. When we face difficult times, we can remind ourselves of his promises. Some of my favorites are; He gives strength to the weary (Isaiah 40:31), His love never fails (Isaiah 54:10), He gives us wisdom (James 1:5), He forgives us (1 John 1:9), He will never forsake us (Deuteronomy 31:6), He will meet all of our needs (Philippians 4:19), He has prepared a place for us (Romans 8:16-17), He has given us eternal life (John 3:16).
The helmet was a vital piece of protection to the head and brain. It was usually the final piece of armor to be put on, the final act before going into battle. The enemy many times attacks us through our thoughts. He puts little doubts into our minds like does God really exist? Am I really saved? I’m not good enough to be a child of God? Does God really love me? I think Paul chose the helmet to represent salvation as it is in our salvation that we have assurance that we will spend eternity with God. It is in this assurance we can defend against the darts of the enemy that cause us to be distracted from the things that God has called us to do.
The final piece of battle gear is not defensive like the others we have covered. The Sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God, is an offensive weapon. Swords were used to attack the enemy, and it was important for soldiers to get training on its proper use. A well-trained soldier would be difficult to defeat in battle. Christians need the same rigorous training in how to use the Word of God as a defense against evil but also an offensive weapon to remove strongholds of error and lies. “For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.” Hebrews 4:12. The Word of God is our lifeline. It is by hearing the Word of God that one can be saved and by studying it we can better understand God, his plan for humanity, and this invisible battle of good vs evil.
So, what does this battle of good vs evil look like today? At its most basic level, I believe the enemy is trying to distract us from the reality of God and our need for forgiveness by convincing us that it is all about the individual and what I need or want. If the enemy can get us to exclusively pursue money, power, and things, we will miss the real meaning and purpose of life. So lets put on the Full Armor of God so that when we see God face to face, we will hear him say; “…Well done, good and faithful servant. You have been faithful over a little; I will set you over much. Enter into the joy of your master.” Matthew 25:21.

Mensaje seminal: La armadura de Dios – Parte 2

La semana pasada hablamos sobre lo difícil que es creer en cosas que no podemos ver, tocar ni sentir. A pesar de ese desafío, hay cosas que no podemos experimentar con nuestros sentidos y en las que creemos firmemente, como el wifi, las señales de los celulares, los rayos X y virus como el Covid-19. El mundo espiritual es algo que no podemos ver, pero muchos creemos en la existencia de Dios. «Porque sus atributos invisibles, es decir, su eterno poder y deidad, se perciben claramente desde la creación del mundo, a través de las cosas creadas, de modo que no tienen excusa». Romanos 1:20.
Entre otras razones, la Biblia nos dice que la tierra, el universo y todo lo que hay en él refleja el poder y la naturaleza divina de nuestro Dios. Al mirar a nuestro alrededor, también vemos las señales de la batalla espiritual de la que habla Pablo en Efesios 6: “Porque no tenemos lucha contra sangre y carne, sino contra principados, contra potestades, contra los poderes cósmicos de las tinieblas presentes, contra huestes espirituales de maldad en las regiones celestes. Por tanto, tomen toda la armadura de Dios, para que puedan resistir en el día malo, y habiendo acabado todo, mantenerse firmes”. Desde la política hasta la ética, la religión y la educación, Pablo nos dice que nos pongamos toda la armadura de Dios para que podamos mantenernos firmes en lo que Él nos ha enseñado.
La semana pasada, vimos los tres primeros componentes de nuestra armadura espiritual: el cinturón de la verdad, la coraza de justicia y el calzado del evangelio. Los tres restantes son el escudo de la fe, el yelmo de la salvación y la espada del Espíritu, que es la palabra de Dios. Efesios 6:17-18. De todas las armaduras defensivas, el escudo era el que permitía al guerrero desviar los golpes del enemigo. Pablo continúa diciéndonos: «En toda circunstancia, tomen el escudo de la fe, con el cual podrán apagar todos los dardos de fuego del maligno». Nuestra fe nos permite confiar plenamente en el poder y la protección de Dios, sabiendo que Él obra todas las cosas para bien.
Cuando enfrentamos momentos difíciles, podemos recordar sus promesas. Algunas de mis favoritas son: Él fortalece al cansado (Isaías 40:31), su amor nunca falla (Isaías 54:10), nos da sabiduría (Santiago 1:5), nos perdona (1 Juan 1:9), nunca nos abandonará (Deuteronomio 31:6), suplirá todas nuestras necesidades (Filipenses 4:19), nos ha preparado un lugar (Romanos 8:16-17), nos ha dado vida eterna (Juan 3:16).
El yelmo era una pieza vital de protección para la cabeza y el cerebro. Generalmente era la última pieza de la armadura que se ponía, el acto final antes de entrar en batalla. El enemigo muchas veces nos ataca a través de nuestros pensamientos. Él siembra pequeñas dudas en nuestras mentes, como: ¿Realmente existe Dios? ¿Soy realmente salvo? ¿No soy lo suficientemente bueno para ser hijo de Dios?
¿Dios realmente me ama? Creo que Pablo eligió el yelmo para representar la salvación, ya que es en nuestra salvación que tenemos la seguridad de que pasaremos la eternidad con Dios. Es con esta seguridad que podemos defendernos de los dardos del enemigo que nos distraen de las cosas que Dios nos ha llamado a hacer.
La última pieza del equipo de batalla no es defensiva como las otras que hemos visto. La Espada del Espíritu, que es la Palabra de Dios, es un arma ofensiva. Las espadas se usaban para atacar al enemigo, y era importante que los soldados recibieran entrenamiento en su uso correcto. Un soldado bien entrenado sería difícil de derrotar en batalla. Los cristianos necesitan el mismo entrenamiento riguroso en cómo usar la Palabra de Dios como defensa contra el mal, pero también como arma ofensiva para eliminar las fortalezas del error y la mentira. «Porque la palabra de Dios es viva y eficaz, más cortante que toda espada de dos filos; penetra hasta partir el alma y el espíritu, las coyunturas y los tuétanos, y discierne los pensamientos y las intenciones del corazón» (Hebreos 4:12). La Palabra de Dios es nuestra salvación. Es al escuchar la Palabra de Dios que podemos ser salvos, y al estudiarla podemos comprender mejor a Dios, su plan para la humanidad y esta batalla invisible del bien contra el mal.
Entonces, ¿cómo se manifiesta esta batalla del bien contra el mal hoy en día? En su nivel más básico, creo que el enemigo intenta distraernos de la realidad de Dios y de nuestra necesidad de perdón, convenciéndonos de que todo se trata del individuo y de lo que necesito o quiero. Si el enemigo logra que busquemos exclusivamente el dinero, el poder y las posesiones, perderemos el verdadero significado y propósito de la vida. Así que vistámonos con la armadura completa de Dios para que, cuando veamos a Dios cara a cara, le oigamos decir: «Bien hecho, buen siervo y fiel. Has sido fiel en lo poco; sobre mucho te pondré.
