Weekly Message: Nehemiah – With God all Things are Possible

Have you ever had a task or project you needed to accomplish that seemed impossible? I know sometimes when I am faced with a difficult or large task, it is easy to put it off for another day because the effort that will be required is so significant. It can also be discouraging when distractions come, and you turn your attention to more immediate concerns or problems. We are certainly not the first generation to face big challenges. The bible has so much to say about not being afraid to go after something big. From Moses and his leadership of the Jewish people out of Egypt, to Noah and the building of the Ark, men and women of God have been called to accomplish the impossible. In today’s message we will look at the life of Nehemiah and the impossible task that God called him to tackle.
Nehemiah lived about 450 BC at a time when the Jews had returned to Jerusalem from their captivity in Babylon. Nehemiah worked as the cupbearer to the Persian king Artexerxes. A cupbearer was historically an officer of high rank in royal courts, whose duty was to pour and serve the drinks at the royal table. Given the constant fear of plots and revolts to those in authority, a person must have been regarded as thoroughly trustworthy to hold the position. Nehemiah was in contact with the Jews living in Jerusalem and felt a heavy burden that the walls protecting the city were in shambles. The Jews had enemies on all sides, and it would only be a matter of time before they were invaded and conquered again. This burden turned into a calling and Nehemiah prayed that God would use him to accomplish this impossible task.
Nehemiah had influence with King Artexerxes and one day when Nehemiah was in his presence, the King noticed that Nehemiah was troubled and asked, “why is your face sad, seeing you are not sick?” Nehemiah responded and said, “Why should not my face be sad, when the city, the place of my fathers’ graves, lies in ruins, and its gates have been destroyed by fire?” Having gained favor with the King, Nehemiah boldly asked him to put Nehemiah in charge of rebuilding the walls, provide him letters for safe passage and the lumber that would be required.
Artexerxes granted his request. Nehemiah’s return to Jeruselem became known to the enemies of Israel so Nehemiah did not disclose the purpose for the return and secretly assessed the situation and built a detailed plan to rebuild the walls. A key to Nehemiah’s plan to rebuild the walls was to break the effort down into more manageable pieces. Instead of one master project, Nehemiah assigned families to construct the portion of the wall that was closest to their own homestead. This approach created great ownership amongst the people and made the effort seem much less overwhelming. About halfway through the reconstruction, the enemies of the Jews became aware of the effort to rebuild the walls. Nehemiah expecting that this would happen, prayed to God for safety, and prepared the Jews for battle. When the leaders of the enemies saw that the Jews were prepared to fight, they backed off their attack. The Jewish teams worked with building implements in one hand and a sword in the other. It was said that the Jews never prepared for bed and that they wore their work and fighting clothes constantly except when they needed to be laundered.
Seeing that the Jews were prepared for battle, the enemy decided to try a more subtle attack. The leaders of the Ammonites, Arabs and Philistines requested an audience with Nehemiah. But he would not leave from the work because the job was too important. Nehemiah knew that their intentions were to distract him from his task. They continued to solicit Nehemiah to come and meet with them. They even accused him of wanting to build the wall for personal advancement. Undeterred, Nehemiah focused on completing the 4 ½ mile wall, and start to finish it was rebuilt in 52 days. A feat that seemed impossible was accomplished by a group of dedicated believers.
So, what can we learn about taking on something big from the story of Nehemiah? I believe it starts with calling, the conviction that this is something that we were meant to do. Praying for wisdom can lead to creative solutions. Gifts of influence and position are blessings from God and are given for a reason. Detailed planning is critical and servant leadership is essential to create commitment and dedication from followers. We must anticipate obstacles and distractions and realize that anything worth accomplishing will require hard work and dedication. But most of all, do not be deterred from the size or complexity of the effort because with God, all things are possible.

¿Alguna vez has tenido una tarea o un proyecto que necesitabas realizar y que parecía imposible? Sé que a veces, cuando me enfrento a una tarea difícil o grande, es fácil posponerla para otro día porque el esfuerzo que se requerirá es muy significativo. También puede ser desalentador cuando surgen distracciones y centras tu atención en preocupaciones o problemas más inmediatos. Ciertamente, no somos la primera generación que enfrenta grandes desafíos. La Biblia tiene mucho que decir acerca de no tener miedo de ir tras algo grande. Desde Moisés y su liderazgo del pueblo judío fuera de Egipto, hasta Noé y la construcción del Arca, los hombres y mujeres de Dios han sido llamados a lograr lo imposible. En el mensaje de hoy, veremos la vida de Nehemías y la tarea imposible que Dios lo llamó a abordar.
Nehemías vivió alrededor del año 450 a. C. en una época en la que los judíos habían regresado a Jerusalén de su cautiverio en Babilonia. Nehemías trabajó como copero del rey persa Artexerjes. Históricamente, un copero era un oficial de alto rango en las cortes reales, cuyo deber era servir las bebidas en la mesa real. Dado el constante temor de las conspiraciones y revueltas que tenían quienes tenían autoridad, una persona debía ser considerada completamente confiable para ocupar el puesto. Nehemías estaba en contacto con los judíos que vivían en Jerusalén y sentía una gran carga porque los muros que protegían la ciudad estaban en ruinas. Los judíos tenían enemigos por todos lados, y solo sería cuestión de tiempo antes de que fueran invadidos y conquistados nuevamente. Esta carga se convirtió en un llamado y Nehemías oró para que Dios
lo usara para llevar a cabo esta tarea imposible.
Nehemías tenía influencia con el rey Artexerjes y un día cuando Nehemías estaba en su presencia, el rey notó
que Nehemías estaba preocupado y le preguntó: “¿Por qué está triste tu rostro, ya que no estás enfermo?” Nehemías respondió y dijo: “¿Por qué no ha de estar triste mi rostro, cuando la ciudad, lugar de los sepulcros de mis padres, está en ruinas, y sus puertas han sido consumidas por el fuego?” Habiendo ganado el favor del Rey, Nehemías le pidió con valentía que lo pusiera a encargado de reconstruir los muros, que le proporcionara cartas para un paso seguro y la madera que se necesitaría. Artexerjes le concedió su pedido. El regreso de Nehemías a Jerusalén llegó a conocimiento de los enemigos de Israel, por lo que Nehemías no reveló el propósito del regreso y evaluó en secreto la situación y elaboró un plan detallado para reconstruir los muros.
Una clave del plan de Nehemías para reconstruir los muros fue dividir el esfuerzo en partes más manejables. En lugar de un proyecto maestro, Nehemías asignó a familias la construcción de la parte del muro que estaba más cerca de su propia propiedad. Este enfoque creó un gran sentido de propiedad entre la gente e hizo que el esfuerzo pareciera mucho menos abrumador. A mitad de la reconstrucción, los enemigos de los judíos se dieron cuenta del esfuerzo por reconstruir los muros. Nehemías, esperando que esto sucediera, oró a Dios por seguridad y preparó a los judíos para la batalla. Cuando los líderes de los enemigos vieron que los judíos estaban preparados para pelear, desistieron de su ataque. Los equipos judíos trabajaban con herramientas de construcción en una mano y una espada en la otra. Se decía que los judíos nunca se preparaban para dormir y que usaban su ropa de trabajo y de combate constantemente, excepto cuando necesitaban lavarse.
Al ver que los judíos estaban preparados para la batalla, el enemigo decidió intentar un ataque más sutil. Los líderes de los amonitas, árabes y filisteos solicitaron una audiencia con Nehemías. Pero él no se apartó del trabajo
porque el trabajo era demasiado importante. Nehemías sabía que sus intenciones eran distraerlo de su tarea. Continuaron pidiéndole a Nehemías que viniera y se reuniera con ellos. Incluso lo acusaron de querer construir el muro para su propio progreso. Sin desanimarse, Nehemías se concentró en completar el muro de 4 ½ millas, y de principio a fin lo reconstruyó en 52 días. Una hazaña que parecía imposible fue lograda por un grupo de creyentes dedicados. Entonces, ¿qué podemos aprender sobre emprender algo grande de la historia de Nehemías? Creo que comienza con el llamado, la convicción de que esto es algo que estábamos destinados a hacer. Orar por sabiduría puede conducir a soluciones creativas. Los dones de influencia y posición son bendiciones de Dios y se dan por una razón. La planificación detallada es fundamental y el liderazgo de servicio es esencial para crear compromiso y dedicación de los seguidores. Debemos anticipar obstáculos y distracciones y darnos cuenta de que cualquier cosa que valga la pena lograr requerirá trabajo duro y dedicación. Pero sobre todo, no se deje intimidar por el tamaño o la complejidad del esfuerzo porque con Dios, todo es posible.
