Weekly Message: The Wise and Foolish Builders

Jesus had many things to say when He was here on earth. Sometimes it is easy to get confused about His teaching because everyone seems to have their own opinions about it. As much as I enjoy listening to pastors and others speak about Jesus’ teaching, there is nothing better than to read for yourself exactly what Jesus had to say. The books of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John is a great place to read for yourself about Jesus’ teaching. Matthew was a tax collector; Mark, a reporter; Luke, a physician; and John, a fisherman. They were a diverse group from different backgrounds and the letters were originally written to different audiences, Hebrews, Romans, Greeks, and Christians. These books give us the best insights into the key things Jesus taught about, and how we should pattern our life to be consistent with them. One of my favorite sections is the part of Matthew that is called the Sermon on the Mount. This sermon was given by Jesus and intended to guide listeners in how they should live their life as believers in Him, not just in what they should believe, but how they should make decisions that honor God.
At the end of this Sermon, Jesus says: “Therefore everyone who hears these words of Mine and acts on them, may be compared to a wise man who built his house on the rock. And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and slammed against that house; and yet it did not fall, for it had been founded on the rock. Everyone who hears these words of Mine and does not act on them, will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand. The rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and slammed against that house; and it fell—and great was its fall.” Matthew 7:24-27. Jesus speaks of two builders. One, a wise man, builds his house upon the rock. The other, a foolish man, builds his house upon the sand. What are these houses? What is this rock? What is this sand? And what are the storms that threaten to destroy them? The houses represent the core of our life. They symbolize our beliefs, our actions and our character. They embody the choices we make, the paths we follow, and the principles by which we live. It is our beliefs that support the decisions we make. That foundation can either be rock or sand. The rock being defined by God’s word or the sand being worldly wisdom and the fleeting trends of popular opinion, the allure of what the world has to offer. There is no question that there are two paths we can follow, one that is determined by the world, and one that is laid out before us by God.
And then, the storms come. The rain falls, the floods rise, and the winds blow. These storms are the inevitable trials and tribulations of life. They are the challenges that test our faith, the hardships that threaten to overwhelm us, the temptations that seek to lead us astray. They are the moments when our character is put to the ultimate test. The wise man, who built his house on the rock, faces the storm with confidence. He has prepared himself, his foundation is secure, and though the winds may howl, and the floods may rage, his house stands firm. He has acted upon the words of Christ, and in doing so, he has built a life that can withstand the storms. But the foolish man, who built his house on the sand, is swept away by the storm. He has ignored the warnings, he has disregarded the foundation, and his house crumbles beneath the force of the elements. His fall is great, his destruction complete. He has heard the words of Christ, but he has not lived them and has built a life that cannot withstand the trials of life.
We live in a fallen world, a world where suffering exists. Jesus himself said, “In this world you will have trouble.” John 16:33. When the winds of adversity blow, a shallow faith will crumble and many times we can turn to the things of this world (alcohol, drugs, desire for wealth & possessions, the love of money, the pursuit of pleasure). But a faith rooted in the unwavering love of God, in the promises of scripture, and in the fellowship of believers, will provide a solid foundation. That rock is our faith in Jesus Christ. When we experience fear and doubt, we turn to God’s word and the comfort of prayer. When isolation threatens, we connect with other believers that can help support us. Jesus did not promise a life free from pain, but a life empowered by his presence. Let us be builders of a life built on the rock (Jesus), rather than a life built on the sand.

Jesús tenía muchas cosas que decir cuando estuvo aquí en la tierra. A veces es fácil confundirse acerca de sus enseñanzas porque cada uno parece tener sus propias opiniones al respecto. Por mucho que me guste escuchar a los pastores y a otras personas hablar sobre las enseñanzas de Jesús, no hay nada mejor que leer por uno mismo exactamente lo que Jesús tenía que decir. Los libros de Mateo, Marcos, Lucas y Juan son un gran lugar para leer por uno mismo acerca de las enseñanzas de Jesús. Mateo era un recaudador de impuestos; Marcos, un reportero; Lucas, un médico; y Juan, un pescador. Eran un grupo diverso de diferentes trasfondos y las cartas fueron escritas originalmente para diferentes audiencias, hebreos, romanos, griegos y cristianos. Estos libros nos dan las mejores perspectivas sobre las cosas clave que Jesús enseñó, y cómo debemos modelar nuestra vida para ser coherentes con ellas. Una de mis secciones favoritas es la parte de Mateo que se llama el Sermón del Monte. Este sermón fue dado por Jesús y tenía la intención de guiar a los oyentes en cómo deben vivir su vida como creyentes en Él, no solo en lo que deben creer, sino cómo deben tomar decisiones que honren a Dios.
Al final de este Sermón, Jesús dice: “Por tanto, todo aquel que oye estas palabras mías y las pone en práctica, será semejante a un hombre prudente que edificó su casa sobre la roca. Cayó la lluvia, vinieron los ríos, soplaron los vientos y azotaron aquella casa; pero no cayó, porque estaba fundada sobre la roca. Todo aquel que oye estas palabras mías y no las pone en práctica, será semejante a un hombre insensato que edificó su casa sobre la arena. Cayó la lluvia, vinieron los ríos, soplaron los vientos y azotaron aquella casa; y cayó, y fue grande su ruina.” Mateo 7:24-27. Jesús habla de dos constructores. Uno, un hombre prudente, construye su casa sobre la roca. El otro, un hombre insensato, construye su casa sobre la arena. ¿Qué son estas casas? ¿Qué es esta roca? ¿Qué es esta arena? ¿Y qué son las tormentas que amenazan con destruirlas? Las casas representan el núcleo de nuestra vida. Los cimientos de la fe simbolizan nuestras creencias, nuestras acciones y nuestro carácter. Representan las decisiones que tomamos, los caminos que seguimos y los principios por los que vivimos. Nuestras creencias son las que sustentan las decisiones que tomamos. Ese cimiento puede ser roca o arena. La roca está definida por la palabra de Dios, y la arena por la sabiduría mundana y las tendencias pasajeras de la opinión popular, el atractivo de lo que el mundo tiene para ofrecer. No hay duda de que hay dos caminos que podemos seguir: uno que está determinado por el mundo y otro que Dios nos presenta.
Y luego llegan las tormentas. Cae la lluvia, aumentan las inundaciones y soplan los vientos. Estas tormentas son las inevitables pruebas y tribulaciones de la vida. Son los desafíos que ponen a prueba nuestra fe, las dificultades que amenazan con abrumarnos, las tentaciones que buscan desviarnos. Son los momentos en los que nuestro carácter se pone a prueba de manera definitiva. El hombre sabio, que construyó su casa sobre la roca, enfrenta la tormenta con confianza. Él se ha preparado, su fundamento es seguro, y aunque los vientos aúllen y las inundaciones rugan, su casa se mantiene firme. Él ha actuado según las palabras de Cristo, y al hacerlo, ha construido una vida que puede resistir las tormentas. Pero el hombre necio, que construyó su casa sobre la arena, es arrastrado por la tormenta. Ha ignorado las advertencias, ha desatendido los cimientos, y su casa se derrumba bajo la fuerza de los elementos. Su caída es grande, su destrucción completa. Él ha escuchado las palabras de Cristo, pero no las ha vivido y ha construido una vida que no puede resistir las pruebas de la vida.
Vivimos en un mundo caído, un mundo donde existe el sufrimiento. Jesús mismo dijo: “En este mundo tendréis aflicción”. Juan 16:33. Cuando soplan los vientos de la adversidad, una fe superficial se desmorona y muchas veces podemos recurrir a las cosas de este mundo (alcohol, drogas, deseo de riquezas y posesiones, amor al dinero, búsqueda del placer). Pero una fe arraigada en el amor inquebrantable de Dios, en las promesas de las Escrituras y en la comunión de los creyentes, proporcionará una base sólida. Esa roca es nuestra fe en Jesucristo. Cuando experimentamos miedo y duda, recurrimos a la palabra de Dios y al consuelo de la oración. Cuando el aislamiento amenaza, nos conectamos con otros creyentes que pueden ayudarnos a apoyarnos. Jesús no prometió una vida libre de dolor, sino una vida fortalecida por su presencia. Seamos constructores de una vida construida sobre la roca (Jesús), en lugar de una vida construida sobre la arena.
La vida puede presentarnos a todos muchos desafíos y nunca es demasiado tarde para tomar una decisión diferente.
