Weekly Message: The Spirit of the Law

Have you ever heard the phrase “Spirit of the Law?”  Spirit of the Law usually refers to the deeper meaning or ultimate purpose of the law where the phrase “Letter of the Law” refers to the exact wording of law, literally applied.  An example of this might be the speed limit on our roads.  The letter of the law might say that 65 is the speed limit.  The spirit of the law is for drivers not to exceed a speed that is considered safe on a particular roadway.  If I am driving in torrential rain, the spirit of the law would say that I should reduce my speed where following the letter of the law would say I can still drive 65 even if that creates an unsafe situation for myself and others.  This challenge between the Spirit of the Law and the Letter of the Law was a significant part of the teachings of Jesus.  There are numerous accounts in the bible where Jesus confronted the Pharisees and accused them of not keeping the Spirit of the Law and this seemed to anger Jesus more than almost anything else.

The Pharisees (the religious leaders in Jesus day) were strict followers of the Law that was given to Moses by God. But their following of the Law many times missed the intent of the Law.  Known as legalists, these Jewish leaders were attempting to gain favor with God or to impress others by doing or avoiding certain things without regard to the condition of their hearts.  Many times, this strict adherence was driven by pride or a desire to exalt oneself in the sight of others. In their attempt to keep God’s law, the Pharisees added hundreds of man-made laws that were well beyond the spirit of what God intended.  So, let’s take a closer at some of Jesus’ interactions with these leaders.

“And behold, there was a woman who had had a disabling spirit for eighteen years. She was bent over and could not fully straighten herself. When Jesus saw her, he called her over and said to her, “Woman, you are freed from your disability.”  And he laid his hands on her, and immediately she was made straight, and she glorified God. But the ruler of the synagogue, indignant because Jesus had healed on the Sabbath, said to the people, “There are six days in which work ought to be done. Come on those days and be healed, and not on the Sabbath day.”  Then the Lord answered him, “You hypocrites! Does not each of you on the Sabbath untie his ox or his donkey from the manger and lead it away to water it?  And ought not this woman, a daughter of Abraham whom Satan bound for eighteen years, be loosed from this bond on the Sabbath day?”  As he said these things, all his adversaries were put to shame, and all the people rejoiced at all the glorious things that were done by him.” Luke 13:11-17.

“Then Jesus said to the crowds and to his disciples, “The scribes and the Pharisees sit on Moses’ seat, so do and observe whatever they tell you, but not the works they do. For they preach, but do not practice.  They tie up heavy burdens, hard to bear, and lay them on people’s shoulders, but they themselves are not willing to move them with their finger.  They do all their deeds to be seen by others.” Matthew 23:1-5.

“Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You give a tenth of your spices—mint, dill and cumin. But you have neglected the more important matters of the law—justice, mercy and faithfulness. You should have practiced the latter, without neglecting the former.  You blind guides! You strain out a gnat but swallow a camel. Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You clean the outside of the cup and dish, but inside they are full of greed and self-indulgence.  Blind Pharisee! First clean the inside of the cup and dish, and then the outside also will be clean.” Matthew 23:23-25.

Even today, sometimes the church falls into this kind of legalistic thinking.  If we want to go to heaven, we need to follow this long list of rules and duties.  But that is not the core of what Jesus taught.  Jesus summed up the spirit of the Law of Moses when he answered a question asked by a Pharisee about which of the laws were most important.  Jesus replied “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.  This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself.  On these two commandments depend all the Law and the Prophets.”  Matthew 32:37-40.  The core of God’s law is about our love for Him and our love for others. It is about our hearts. In our efforts to be good Christians, may we not miss the core of what Jesus taught us.  And out of God’s love for us, he sent Jesus so that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.  “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God.” Ephesians 2:8.

¿Alguna vez has escuchado la frase “Espíritu de la Ley”? El espíritu de la ley generalmente se refiere al significado más profundo o al propósito final de la ley, mientras que la frase “letra de la ley” se refiere a la redacción exacta de la ley, aplicada literalmente. Un ejemplo de esto podría ser el límite de velocidad en nuestras carreteras. La letra de la ley podría decir que 65 es el límite de velocidad. El espíritu de la ley es que los conductores no excedan una velocidad que se considere segura en una carretera en particular. Si conduzco bajo una lluvia torrencial, el espíritu de la ley diría que debo reducir mi velocidad cuando, siguiendo la letra de la ley, todavía puedo conducir 65, incluso si eso crea una situación insegura para mí y para los demás. Este desafío entre el Espíritu de la Ley y la Letra de la Ley fue una parte importante de las enseñanzas de Jesús. Hay numerosos relatos en la Biblia donde Jesús confrontó a los fariseos y los acusó de no guardar el Espíritu de la Ley y esto pareció enojar a Jesús más que cualquier otra cosa.

Los fariseos (los líderes religiosos en los días de Jesús) eran seguidores estrictos de la Ley que Dios le dio a Moisés. Pero su seguimiento de la Ley muchas veces pasó por alto la intención de la Ley. Conocidos como legalistas, estos líderes judíos intentaban ganarse el favor de Dios o impresionar a otros al hacer o evitar ciertas cosas sin tener en cuenta la condición de sus corazones. Muchas veces, esta estricta adhesión fue impulsada por el orgullo o el deseo de exaltarse a sí mismo a la vista de los demás. En su intento por guardar la ley de Dios, los fariseos añadieron cientos de leyes hechas por hombres que estaban mucho más allá del espíritu de lo que Dios pretendía. Entonces, echemos un vistazo más de cerca a algunas de las interacciones de Jesús con estos líderes.

“Y he aquí, había una mujer que tenía un espíritu incapacitante desde hacía dieciocho años. Estaba inclinada y no podía enderezarse por completo. Cuando Jesús la vio, la llamó y le dijo: “Mujer, quedas libre de tu invalidez”. Y él puso sus manos sobre ella, y al instante ella se enderezó, y glorificó a Dios. Pero el principal de la sinagoga, indignado porque Jesús había sanado en sábado, dijo a la gente: “Hay seis días en los que se debe trabajar. Ven en esos días y serás sanado, y no en el día de reposo”. Entonces el Señor le respondió: “¡Hipócritas! ¿No desata cada uno de vosotros en sábado su buey o su asno del pesebre y lo lleva a beber? ¿Y a esta mujer, hija de Abraham, a quien Satanás ató durante dieciocho años, no se le debe desatar de esta atadura en sábado? Mientras decía estas cosas, todos sus adversarios se avergonzaban, y todo el pueblo se regocijaba por todas las cosas gloriosas que había hecho”. Lucas 13:11-17.

“Entonces Jesús dijo a la multitud ya sus discípulos: “En la cátedra de Moisés se sientan los escribas y los fariseos, así que haced y observad todo lo que os digan, pero no las obras que hacen. Porque predican, pero no practican. Atan cargas pesadas, difíciles de llevar, y las ponen sobre los hombros de la gente, pero ellos mismos no están dispuestos a moverlas con el dedo. Hacen todas sus obras para ser vistos por los demás”. Mateo 23:1-5.

“¡Ay de vosotros, maestros de la ley y fariseos, hipócritas! Das la décima parte de tus especias: menta, eneldo y comino. Pero has descuidado los asuntos más importantes de la ley: la justicia, la misericordia y la fidelidad. Deberías haber practicado lo segundo, sin descuidar lo primero. ¡Guías ciegos! Cuelgas un mosquito pero te tragas un camello. ¡Ay de vosotros, maestros de la ley y fariseos, hipócritas! Limpias el exterior de la copa y del plato, pero por dentro están llenos de codicia y desenfreno. Fariseo ciego! Limpia primero lo de dentro del vaso y del plato, y entonces también lo de fuera quedará limpio. Mateo 23:23-25.

Incluso hoy en día, a veces la iglesia cae en este tipo de pensamiento legalista. Si queremos ir al cielo, debemos seguir esta larga lista de reglas y deberes. Pero ese no es el núcleo de lo que Jesús enseñó. Jesús resumió el espíritu de la Ley de Moisés cuando respondió a la pregunta de un fariseo sobre cuál de las leyes era la más importante. Jesús respondió: “Amarás al Señor tu Dios con todo tu corazón y con toda tu alma y con toda tu mente. Este es el gran y primer mandamiento. Y el segundo es semejante: Amarás a tu prójimo como a ti mismo. De estos dos mandamientos depende toda la Ley y los Profetas.” Mateo 32:37-40. El núcleo de la ley de Dios se trata de nuestro amor por Él y nuestro amor por los demás. Se trata de nuestros corazones. En nuestros esfuerzos por ser buenos cristianos, que no perdamos de vista el núcleo de lo que Jesús nos enseñó. Y por el amor de Dios por nosotros, envió a Jesús para que todo aquel que en él cree no se pierda, sino que tenga vida eterna. “Porque por gracia sois salvos por medio de la fe; y esto no de vosotros, pues es don de Dios.” Efesios 2:8.
