Weekly Message: The Birth of the Christian Church

We have been having some great conversations in our weekly faith discussion group.  If you haven’t joined us for one of them, check it out at 9am each Tuesday.  Over the last several weeks we have taken a detailed look at the life of Jesus from his entrance into Jerusalem to his death, resurrection, and ascension into heaven.  Over the next few weeks, we will take a closer look at the early days of the Christian church.

After Jesus ascended into heaven, the disciples gathered in Jerusalem and Peter directs the group to elect a replacement for Judas who had committed suicide after his betrayal of Jesus. Peter tells the group that the replacement needed to have followed Jesus from the His baptism by John through his death, resurrection and ascension and seen all that had happened.  There were two men who were put forward as candidates, Justus and Matthias.  Peter then prayed and asked the Lord to show them which of these men should take Judas’ place, they then cast lots and chose Matthias.

Jewish men from all over the known world were now in Jerusalem to celebrate Shavuot, the Greek name for Pentecost. This celebration occurs 50 days after Passover and commemorated the giving of the Torrah (the first five books of the bible) by God to Moses on Mount Sinai. Shavuot was one of the three festivals that required all Jewish males to observe the occasion at the Holy Temple in Jerusalem.  These men came from what is today Iran, Iraq, Kuwait, Israel, Palestine, Turkey, Egypt, Libya, Italy, Greece and Saudi Arabia. Peter and the eleven other disciples had gathered in one place.  “And suddenly there came from heaven a sound like a mighty rushing wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. And divided tongues as of fire appeared to them and rested on each one of them.  And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance.” Acts 2:2-4.  The Holy Spirit that Jesus had promised was imparted to each of the 12 disciples.  This must have been an awesome sight to see. God chose this moment, when Jerusalem was full of Jews from all parts of the world, to empower the disciples to speak to the mighty works of God in the native languages of these visitors! Many were amazed yet some said that the Disciples were drunk on new wine.

God transforms lives and there is no better example of this than the Apostle Peter. It was Peter who denied he knew Jesus only eight weeks earlier. But now, filled with the Holy Spirit, Peter boldly gives a powerful sermon accusing the Jewish leaders of killing Jesus, and declaring that Jesus is the Messiah.  Those hearing the sermon were “cut to the heart” and asked Peter what they should do.  Peter then says “repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.  For the promise is for you and for your children and for all who are far off, everyone whom the Lord our God calls to himself.”  Acts 2:38-39.  There were more than three thousand people who heard Peters words and were baptized that day. 

The Holy Spirit that empowered Peter to boldly proclaim that Jesus is the Messiah is the same Holy Spirit that fills every believer today.  The Bible tells us that the Holy Spirit has all of the characteristics of a person; intelligence, will and emotions and is part of the Trinity – Father, Son and Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is described as a helper and teacher in John 14:26 “But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.” It is also the Holy Spirit that gives us gifts to minster to others. “For to one is given through the Spirit the utterance of wisdom, and to another the utterance of knowledge according to the same Spirit, to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit, to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another the ability to distinguish between spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues. All these are empowered by one and the same Spirit, who apportions to each one individually as he wills. 1 Corinthians 12:8-11.

It is the Holy Spirit working through Peter that accelerates the spread of the Gospel and the birth of the Christian Church.  We have this same Spirit working within us. We are never alone, regardless of our circumstances. The Holy Spirit is our teacher, guide and comforter. It is his work that opens our eyes to the truth of God’s word and helps us to become more like Jesus.

Mensaje Semanal: El nacimiento de la iglesia cristiana

Hemos tenido excelentes conversaciones en nuestro grupo de discusión semanal sobre la fe. Si no se ha unido a nosotros para uno de ellos, échele un vistazo a las 9 a.m. todos los martes. En las últimas semanas hemos analizado detalladamente la vida de Jesús desde su entrada a Jerusalén hasta su muerte, resurrección y ascensión al cielo. Durante las próximas semanas, veremos más de cerca los primeros días de la iglesia cristiana.

Después de que Jesús ascendió al cielo, los discípulos se reunieron en Jerusalén y Pedro dirige al grupo para elegir un reemplazo para Judas, quien se suicidó después de traicionar a Jesús. Pedro le dice al grupo que el reemplazo necesitaba haber seguido a Jesús desde Su bautismo por Juan a través de su muerte, resurrección y ascensión y haber visto todo lo que había sucedido. Hubo dos hombres que se presentaron como candidatos, Justus y Matthias. Entonces Pedro oró y le pidió al Señor que les mostrara cuál de estos hombres debería tomar el lugar de Judas, luego echaron suertes y eligieron a Matías.

Hombres judíos de todo el mundo conocido estaban ahora en Jerusalén para celebrar Shavuot, el nombre griego de Pentecostés. Esta celebración ocurre 50 días después de Pesaj y conmemora la entrega de la Torrah (los primeros cinco libros de la Biblia) por parte de Dios a Moisés en el Monte Sinaí. Shavuot era una de las tres festividades que requerían que todos los hombres judíos observaran la ocasión en el Templo Sagrado de Jerusalén. Estos hombres provenían de lo que hoy es Irán, Irak, Kuwait, Israel, Palestina, Turquía, Egipto, Libia, Italia, Grecia y Arabia Saudita. Pedro y los otros once discípulos se habían reunido en un solo lugar. “Y de repente vino del cielo un estruendo como de un fuerte viento que soplaba, y llenó toda la casa donde estaban sentados. Y se les aparecieron lenguas divididas como de fuego y se posaron sobre cada uno de ellos. Y todos fueron llenos del Espíritu Santo y comenzaron a hablar en otras lenguas, según el Espíritu les daba que hablaran”. Hechos 2:2-4. El Espíritu Santo que Jesús había prometido fue impartido a cada uno de los 12 discípulos. Esto debe haber sido una vista increíble para ver. ¡Dios escogió este momento, cuando Jerusalén estaba llena de judíos de todas partes del mundo, para empoderar a los discípulos a hablar de las obras poderosas de Dios en los idiomas nativos de estos visitantes! Muchos estaban asombrados, pero algunos decían que los Discípulos estaban ebrios de vino nuevo.

Dios transforma vidas y no hay mejor ejemplo de esto que el Apóstol Pedro. Fue Pedro quien negó conocer a Jesús solo ocho semanas antes. Pero ahora, lleno del Espíritu Santo, Pedro audazmente da un poderoso sermón acusando a los líderes judíos de matar a Jesús y declarando que Jesús es el Mesías. Los que escucharon el sermón se “comprimieron de corazón” y le preguntaron a Pedro qué debían hacer. Entonces Pedro dice: “arrepentíos y bautícese cada uno de vosotros en el nombre de Jesucristo para perdón de vuestros pecados, y recibiréis el don del Espíritu Santo. Porque la promesa es para vosotros y para vuestros hijos y para todos los que están lejos, para todos los que el Señor nuestro Dios llama a sí. Hechos 2:38-39. Hubo más de tres mil personas que escucharon las palabras de Pedro y se bautizaron ese día.

El Espíritu Santo que le dio poder a Pedro para proclamar audazmente que Jesús es el Mesías es el mismo Espíritu Santo que llena a cada creyente hoy. La Biblia nos dice que el Espíritu Santo tiene todas las características de una persona; inteligencia, voluntad y emociones y es parte de la Trinidad – Padre, Hijo y Espíritu Santo. El Espíritu Santo se describe como ayudante y maestro en Juan 14:26 “Pero el Consolador, el Espíritu Santo, a quien el Padre enviará en mi nombre, él os enseñará todas las cosas y os recordará todo lo que os he dicho. tú.” También es el Espíritu Santo el que nos da dones para ministrar a los demás. “Porque a uno es dada por el Espíritu la expresión de sabiduría, y a otro la expresión de conocimiento según el mismo Espíritu; a otro, fe por el mismo Espíritu; a otro, dones de sanidad por el único Espíritu; a otro, la operación de milagros, a otro profecía, a otro la facultad de distinguir entre espíritus, a otro varios géneros de lenguas, a otro la interpretación de lenguas. Todos estos están facultados por un mismo y único Espíritu, que reparte a cada uno individualmente como quiere. 1 Corintios 12:8-11.

Es el Espíritu Santo obrando a través de Pedro lo que acelera la difusión del Evangelio y el nacimiento de la Iglesia cristiana. Tenemos este mismo Espíritu obrando dentro de nosotros. Nunca estamos solos, independientemente de nuestras circunstancias. El Espíritu Santo es nuestro maestro, guía y consolador. Es su obra la que abre nuestros ojos a la verdad de la palabra de Dios y nos ayuda a ser más como Jesús.
