Weekly Message: Miracles

So, what is a miracle? Do they happen today?  Miracles are something that we can’t understand under the laws of nature.  The natural laws we live under every day govern how we think and understand the world around us.  We know for example, that gravity is a force that operates on our planet, and if we throw a rock or a baseball, it will eventually fall to the ground.  A miracle is something that takes place that operates outside of the law of nature.  They can’t be explained through the natural laws that govern our everyday life. Years ago, many things happened that we could not explain, our understanding of science was not complete enough to understand the reason that nature operated the way it did.  As our knowledge has grown, we have begun to think that we can explain everything.  But what about those instances where someone is totally healed of a physical ailment, or something happens that has no logical or scientific explanation?  I believe miracles do exist today and they give us a small understanding of just how powerful our God actually is.

The Old Testament bible is full of events that occurred that have no logical explanation. It begins in Genesis with the creation of the world and universe and continues to tell us of the relationship between God and man.   One of the more significant miracles was the miracle of the Long Day.  The Israelites were facing a difficult situation against the Amorite kings, they were being outmatched and needed divine intervention.  Joshua prayed to God and asked to be given an extended day so they could defeat their enemies.  God decided in that moment to suspend the natural laws of the universe and granted Joshua an “extended day” so he could defeat the Amorite Kings.  God caused the sun to stand still and the moon to stop giving the Israelites the “extra time” that Joshua requested.  These miracles continue throughout the Old Testament as God ensures that His followers inherit the land that He had promised them.

The miracles continue in the New Testament as Jesus controls the weather, walks on water, heals the sick, and raises Lazarus from the dead.  Jesus goes on to show His control over fixed human laws by feeding the five thousand, healing those that are sick and casting out demons from those who were possessed. Jesus’ most significant miracle was conquering death and offering those that believe in Him forgiveness for their sins.  Jesus also taught us more about who God is, and how we should ask Him for the things that we need. “And when you pray, you must not be like the hypocrites. For they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and at the street corners, that they may be seen by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward.  But when you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you. “And when you pray, do not heap up empty phrases as the Gentiles do, for they think that they will be heard for their many words.  Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him.  Pray then like this: “Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For if you forgive others their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you.” Matthew 6:5-14. The miracle of forgiveness through Jesus restores our relationship with God despite the things we may have done in this life that alienate us from Him.

So, do miracles really exist today?  I believe they do. Some may say that my personal experiences are explained as random events, but I believe them to be the hand of God. I have seen God’s protection by keeping me from getting onto flight Pan Am 103 that blew up over Lockerbie Scotland in 1988. He has healed me through the hands of gifted surgeons and restored me from a stroke that could have easily taken my life. A week ago today God guided a heart surgeon to correct an atrial fibrillation condition that I have been experiencing for more than 20 years. God is the one who is in control even when many would say that God does not exist.  So, what about you? Do you believe in God? Entonces, ¿qué es un milagro? ¿Ocurren hoy en día? Los milagros son algo que no podemos entender bajo las leyes de la naturaleza. Las leyes naturales bajo las que vivimos todos los días gobiernan cómo pensamos y entendemos el mundo que nos rodea. Sabemos, por ejemplo, que la gravedad es una fuerza que opera en nuestro planeta, y si lanzamos una piedra o una pelota de béisbol, eventualmente caerá al suelo. Un milagro es algo que ocurre y que opera fuera de la ley de la naturaleza. No se puede explicar mediante las leyes naturales que gobiernan nuestra vida cotidiana. Hace años, sucedieron muchas cosas que no podíamos explicar, nuestra comprensión de la ciencia no era lo suficientemente completa como para entender la razón por la que la naturaleza operaba de la manera en que lo hacía. A medida que nuestro conocimiento ha aumentado, hemos comenzado a pensar que podemos explicarlo todo. Pero ¿qué pasa con esos casos en los que alguien se cura totalmente de una dolencia física o sucede algo que no tiene una explicación lógica o científica? Creo que los milagros existen hoy en día y nos dan una pequeña comprensión de cuán poderoso es realmente nuestro Dios.

La Biblia del Antiguo Testamento está llena de eventos que ocurrieron que no tienen una explicación lógica. Comienza en Génesis con la creación del mundo y el universo y continúa contándonos la relación entre Dios y el hombre. Uno de los milagros más significativos fue el milagro del Día Largo. Los israelitas se enfrentaban a una situación difícil contra los reyes amorreos, estaban siendo superados y necesitaban la intervención divina. Josué oró a Dios y pidió que se le diera un día extendido para que pudieran derrotar a sus enemigos. Dios decidió en ese momento suspender las leyes naturales del universo y le concedió a Josué un “día extendido” para que pudiera derrotar a los reyes amorreos. Dios hizo que el sol se detuviera y que la luna dejara de dar a los israelitas el “tiempo extra” que Josué solicitó. Estos milagros continúan a lo largo del Antiguo Testamento mientras Dios asegura que Sus seguidores hereden la tierra que les había prometido.

Los milagros continúan en el Nuevo Testamento cuando Jesús controla el clima, camina sobre el agua, sana a los enfermos y resucita a Lázaro de entre los muertos. Jesús continúa mostrando Su control sobre las leyes humanas fijas al alimentar a los cinco mil, sanar a los enfermos y expulsar demonios de los poseídos. El milagro más significativo de Jesús fue vencer la muerte y ofrecer perdón de sus pecados a quienes creen en Él. Jesús también nos enseñó más acerca de quién es Dios y cómo debemos pedirle las cosas que necesitamos. “Y cuando oréis, no seáis como los hipócritas. Porque ellos aman orar de pie en las sinagogas y en las esquinas de las calles, para ser vistos por los hombres. En verdad os digo que ya recibieron su recompensa. Pero tú, cuando ores, entra en tu aposento, cierra la puerta y ora a tu Padre que está en lo secreto. Y tu Padre que ve en lo secreto te recompensará. “Y cuando oréis, no uséis vanas palabras, como hacen los gentiles, que piensan que serán escuchados por su palabrería. No seáis como ellos, porque vuestro Padre sabe lo que necesitáis antes de que se lo pidáis. Orad, pues, así: Padre nuestro que estás en los cielos, santificado sea tu nombre. Venga tu reino. Hágase tu voluntad, así en la tierra como en el cielo. El pan nuestro de cada día, dánoslo hoy; y perdónanos nuestras deudas, como también nosotros perdonamos a nuestros deudores. Y no nos metas en tentación, mas líbranos del mal. Porque si perdonáis a los hombres sus ofensas, os perdonará también a vosotros vuestro Padre celestial.” Mateo 6:5-14. El milagro del perdón a través de Jesús restaura nuestra relación con Dios a pesar de las cosas que hayamos hecho en esta vida que nos alejen de Él.

Entonces, ¿realmente existen los milagros hoy en día? Creo que sí. Algunos pueden decir que mis experiencias personales se explican como eventos aleatorios, pero creo que son la mano de Dios. He visto la protección de Dios al evitar que subiera al vuelo Pan Am 103 que explotó sobre Lockerbie, Escocia, en 1988. Él me ha curado a través de las manos de cirujanos talentosos y me ha restaurado de un derrame cerebral que fácilmente podría haberme quitado la vida. Hace una semana, Dios guió a un cirujano cardíaco para corregir una condición de fibrilación auricular que he estado experimentando durante más de 20 años. Dios es quien tiene el control, aun cuando muchos digan que Dios no existe. Entonces, ¿qué hay de ti? ¿Crees en Dios? ¿Qué preguntas tienes sobre Su existencia y participación en tu vida? Muchos de nosotros hemos tenido que “vivir” circunstancias difíciles que pueden dejarnos cuestionando o no estar seguros de lo que creemos.
