Community Ministry Message: Loving Others

Last week I talked about Jesus’ commands to us found in Matthew 22:47-40 “And he (Jesus) said to him, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment.  And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself.  On these two commandments depend all the Law and the Prophets.” So how do we love our neighbor as ourselves?  I suggested that it starts by taking the focus off of ourselves and paying attention to those that are around us. That is a good start, but there is much more Jesus had to say about this later in the Gospel of Matthew.

Not long before Jesus was put to death, he was meeting with his disciples, and they were asking him questions about God’s plan to establish a new kingdom on earth.  Jesus told them many things including the signs they should be looking for that would help them to know that his return was close at hand. Those signs included wars, famines, earthquakes, false prophets arising leading many astray, and an increase in overall lawlessness.  Jesus also said that the gospel would be preached to all corners of the earth.  I believe that we are seeing many of these signs today.  Jesus then paints a picture of what the final judgement will be like while giving us a picture of what we should be doing to love others as ourselves.

 “When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, then he will sit on his glorious throne.  Before him will be gathered all the nations, and he will separate people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats.  And he will place the sheep on his right, but the goats on the left. Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world.  For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick and you visited me, I was in prison and you came to me.’  Then the righteous will answer him, saying, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you drink?  And when did we see you a stranger and welcome you, or naked and clothe you?  And when did we see you sick or in prison and visit you?’  And the King will answer them, ‘Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me.’ “Then he will say to those on his left, ‘Depart from me, you cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels.  For I was hungry and you gave me no food, I was thirsty and you gave me no drink, I was a stranger and you did not welcome me, naked and you did not clothe me, sick and in prison and you did not visit me.’  Then they also will answer, saying, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison, and did not minister to you?’  Then he will answer them, saying, ‘Truly, I say to you, as you did not do it to one of the least of these, you did not do it to me.’ Matthew 25:31-45.

There are two big takeaways from this passage of scripture.  First, Jesus tells us that a major piece of evidence that one is a follower of Christ is how they treat other people.  He also tells us that the opposite is true, that one of the signs that an individual is not a follower of Christ is how they treat other people. How we treat other people matters, it matters a lot. Finally, when we do good to others, it is as if we are doing that good for Christ himself.  What an honor, to serve the King and master of the universe!

So how can we love others like that?  I think it begins by understanding just how much God loves us. A love so great that God was willing to live life as a human (Jesus) and voluntarily submit to a death on the cross.  A love so deep that if we have faith in Jesus, we are forgiven for anything and everything we have done wrong in this life.  “This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him.  This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins.” 1 John 4:9-10. It is out of God’s love for us, that we can share that love with others.  “A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.” John 13:34-25. The question now becomes, what can I do today to show love towards other people?. We know from 1 Corinthians 13, that showing love involves kindness, patience, and putting others needs above our own.  We can start by just paying attention to those around us and becoming a good listener and asking yourself the question; who can I show God’s love to today.  “So now faith, hope, and love abide, these three; but the greatest of these is love.” 1 Corinthians 13:13.  If you have any questions about how to have faith in Jesus, please get in touch with us as we would be happy to talk with you.  Please call or text 305-306-7842.  Your friends at First Baptist Islamorada

La semana pasada hablé sobre los mandatos de Jesús para nosotros que se encuentran en Mateo 22:47-40 “Y él (Jesús) le dijo: Amarás al Señor tu Dios con todo tu corazón, y con toda tu alma, y con toda tu mente. . Este es el gran y primer mandamiento. Y el segundo es semejante: Amarás a tu prójimo como a ti mismo. De estos dos mandamientos depende toda la Ley y los Profetas.” Entonces, ¿cómo amamos a nuestro prójimo como a nosotros mismos? Sugerí que empezáramos por desviar la atención de nosotros mismos y prestar atención a los que nos rodean. Ese es un buen comienzo, pero hay mucho más que Jesús dijo sobre esto más adelante en el Evangelio de Mateo.

No mucho antes de que Jesús fuera ejecutado, se estaba reuniendo con sus discípulos y le estaban haciendo preguntas sobre el plan de Dios para establecer un nuevo reino en la tierra. Jesús les dijo muchas cosas, incluyendo las señales que debían estar buscando que les ayudarían a saber que su regreso estaba cerca. Esas señales incluían guerras, hambrunas, terremotos, falsos profetas que surgían y desviaban a muchos, y un aumento generalizado de la anarquía. Jesús también dijo que el evangelio sería predicado a todos los rincones de la tierra. Creo que estamos viendo muchos de estos signos hoy. Luego, Jesús pinta un cuadro de cómo será el juicio final mientras nos da un cuadro de lo que debemos hacer para amar a los demás como a nosotros mismos.

  “Cuando el Hijo del Hombre venga en su gloria, y todos los ángeles con él, entonces se sentará en el trono de su gloria. Ante él serán reunidas todas las naciones, y él apartará a los unos de los otros como aparta el pastor las ovejas de los cabritos. Y pondrá las ovejas a su derecha, pero las cabras a su izquierda. Entonces el Rey dirá a los de su derecha: Venid, benditos de mi Padre, heredad el reino preparado para vosotros desde la fundación del mundo. Porque tuve hambre y me disteis de comer, tuve sed y me disteis de beber, fui forastero y me acogisteis, estuve desnudo y me vestisteis, estuve enfermo y me visitasteis, estuve en la cárcel y me vino a mí.’ Entonces los justos le responderán, diciendo: ‘Señor, ¿cuándo te vimos hambriento y te alimentamos, o sediento y te dimos de beber? ¿Y cuándo te vimos forastero y te recibimos, o desnudo y te vestimos? ¿Y cuándo te vimos enfermo o en la cárcel y te visitamos?” Y el Rey les responderá: “De cierto os digo que en cuanto lo hicisteis a uno de estos mis hermanos más pequeños, a mí me lo hicisteis. Entonces dirá a los de su izquierda: Apartaos de mí, malditos, al fuego eterno preparado para el diablo y sus ángeles. Porque tuve hambre y no me disteis de comer, tuve sed y no me disteis de beber, fui forastero y no me acogisteis, desnudo y no me vestisteis, enfermo y en la cárcel y no me visitasteis. .’ Entonces ellos también responderán, diciendo: ‘Señor, ¿cuándo te vimos hambriento o sediento o forastero o desnudo o enfermo o en la cárcel, y no te servimos?’ Entonces él les responderá, diciendo: ‘Verdaderamente , os digo que en cuanto no lo hicisteis a uno de estos más pequeños, tampoco a mí me lo hicisteis.” Mateo 25:31-45.

Hay dos grandes conclusiones de este pasaje de las Escrituras. Primero, Jesús nos dice que una prueba importante de que uno es un seguidor de Cristo es cómo trata a otras personas. También nos dice que es todo lo contrario, que una de las señales de que un individuo no es seguidor de Cristo es cómo trata a los demás. Cómo tratamos a otras personas importa, importa mucho. Finalmente, cuando hacemos el bien a los demás, es como si lo hiciéramos para el mismo Cristo. ¡Qué honor, servir al Rey y amo del universo!

Entonces, ¿cómo podemos amar a los demás de esa manera? Creo que comienza por comprender cuánto nos ama Dios. Un amor tan grande que Dios estuvo dispuesto a vivir la vida como un ser humano (Jesús) y voluntariamente someterse a una muerte en la cruz. Un amor tan profundo que si tenemos fe en Jesús, somos perdonados por todo lo que hemos hecho mal en esta vida. “Así mostró Dios su amor entre nosotros: envió a su Hijo unigénito al mundo para que vivamos por él. Esto es amor: no que nosotros amemos a Dios, sino que él nos amó y envió a su Hijo como sacrificio expiatorio por nuestros pecados”. 1 Juan 4:9-10. Es por el amor de Dios por nosotros, que podemos compartir ese amor con los demás. “Un mandamiento nuevo os doy, que os améis unos a otros: así como yo os he amado, también os améis unos a otros. En esto conocerán todos que sois mis discípulos, si tuviereis amor los unos con los otros.” Juan 13:34-25. La pregunta ahora es, ¿qué puedo hacer hoy para mostrar amor hacia otras personas?. Sabemos por 1 Corintios 13 que mostrar amor implica amabilidad, paciencia y poner las necesidades de los demás por encima de las nuestras. Podemos comenzar simplemente prestando atención a quienes nos rodean y convirtiéndonos en buenos oyentes y haciéndonos la pregunta; ¿A quién puedo mostrar el amor de Dios hoy? “Así que ahora permanecen la fe, la esperanza y el amor, estos tres; Pero el mayor de ellos es el amor.” 1 Corintios 13:13.
