Weekly Message: Judas – For the Love of Money

Have you ever wondered what Judas was thinking when he betrayed Jesus? He was one of the 12 disciples, heard all of Jesus’ teaching and even observed Jesus’ miracles. Why would someone who was so close to Jesus sell him out to the religious leaders for 30 pieces of silver? In today’s message we will take a closer look at this man, and what his motivations might have been to betray Jesus and the other 11 disciples.
Judas is first mentioned as one of the 12 original disciples and part of Jesus’ inner circle. While we don’t know in detail the relationship between Jesus and Judas, Jesus likely selected him personally as one of the original 12 and would have spent much time teaching and training him. Judas would have given up a lot to follow Jesus. He likely gave up his home and profession. Judas was given the job as treasurer and was trusted with the group’s money. All though he was trusted to perform this job, John 12:4-6 tells us that he was a thief. “But Judas Iscariot, one of his disciples (he who was about to betray him), said, “Why was this ointment not sold for three hundred denarii and given to the poor?” He said this, not because he cared about the poor, but because he was a thief, and having charge of the moneybag he used to help himself to what was put into it.”
The betrayal of Jesus was foretold by the prophets hundreds of years before Jesus was born. The prophet Zechariah wrote “Then I said to them, “If it seems good to you, give me my wages; but if not, keep them.” And they weighed out as my wages thirty pieces of silver. Then the Lord said to me, “Throw it to the potter”—the lordly price at which I was priced by them. So I took the thirty pieces of silver and threw them into the house of the Lord, to the potter.” Zechariah 11:12-13. The prophesy suggests a haggling over price, that silver would be the monetary instrument and that the cost would be precisely thirty pieces of silver. Jesus also foretold of his betrayal.
“Truly, truly, I say to you, one of you will betray me.”The disciples looked at one another, uncertain of whom he spoke. One of his disciples, whom Jesus loved, was reclining at table at Jesus’ side,so Simon Peter motioned to him to ask Jesus of whom he was speaking. So that disciple, leaning back against Jesus, said to him, “Lord, who is it?” Jesus answered, “It is he to whom I will give this morsel of bread when I have dipped it.” So when he had dipped the morsel, he gave it to Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot. Then after he had taken the morsel, Satan entered into him. Jesus said to him, “What you are going to do, do quickly.” John 13:13-27. Jesus had seen that Judas was aligned with Satan months before this when he said “Jesus answered them, “Did I not choose you, the twelve? And yet one of you is a devil.” He spoke of Judas the son of Simon Iscariot, for he, one of the twelve, was going to betray him.” John 6:70-71.
The actual events recorded in the Gospels give an account that completely aligned with the prophesies of Zechariah and Jesus. “Then one of the twelve, whose name was Judas Iscariot, went to the chief priests and said, “What will you give me if I deliver him over to you?” And they paid him thirty pieces of silver. And from that moment he sought an opportunity to betray him.” Matthew 26:14-16. “Then when Judas, his betrayer, saw that Jesus was condemned, he changed his mind and brought back the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and the elders, saying, “I have sinned by betraying innocent blood.” They said, “What is that to us? See to it yourself.” And throwing down the pieces of silver into the temple, he departed, and he went and hanged himself. But the chief priests, taking the pieces of silver, said, “It is not lawful to put them into the treasury, since it is blood money.” So they took counsel and bought with them the potter’s field as a burial place for strangers.” Matthew 27:3-7. Ultimately, Judas would identify Jesus to the authorities with a kiss and Jesus would be taken to prison.
I find it interesting that Judas was the treasurer and that he was stealing money from the disciples. Paul tells us that “But those who desire to be rich fall into temptation, into a snare, into many senseless and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction. For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evils. It is through this craving that some have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many pangs.” 1 Timothy 6:9-10. Jesus has also told us “No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money. Matthew 6:24. Was Judas’ love of money so powerful that it caused him to betray the King of Kings? We don’t know for sure but it certainly played a part. May God help us from this temptation and may we be found faithful.

Mensaje Semanal: Judas – Por amor al dinero

¿Alguna vez te has preguntado qué estaba pensando Judas cuando traicionó a Jesús? Era uno de los 12 discípulos, escuchó todas las enseñanzas de Jesús e incluso observó sus milagros. ¿Por qué alguien tan cercano a Jesús lo vendería a los líderes religiosos por 30 piezas de plata? En el mensaje de hoy, analizaremos más de cerca a este hombre y cuáles podrían haber sido sus motivaciones para traicionar a Jesús y a los otros 11 discípulos.
Judas es mencionado por primera vez como uno de los 12 discípulos originales y parte del círculo íntimo de Jesús. Si bien no conocemos en detalle la relación entre Jesús y Judas, es probable que Jesús lo haya seleccionado personalmente como uno de los 12 originales y habría pasado mucho tiempo enseñándole y capacitándolo. Judas habría renunciado a mucho para seguir a Jesús. Es probable que renunciara a su hogar y a su profesión. A Judas se le dio el trabajo de tesorero y se le confió el dinero del grupo. Aunque se le confió la tarea de realizar este trabajo, Juan 12:4-6 nos dice que era un ladrón. “Entonces Judas Iscariote, uno de sus discípulos (el que lo iba a entregar), dijo: “¿Por qué no se vendió este ungüento por trescientosdenarios y se dio a los pobres?”. Dijo esto, no porque le importaran los pobres, sino porque era ladrón, y como tenía a su cargo la bolsa del dinero, robaba de lo que se echaba en ella”.
La traición de Jesús fue predicha por los profetas cientos de años antes de que Jesús naciera. El profeta
Zacarías escribió: “Entonces les dije: “Si les parece bien, denme mi salario; y si no, quédense con él”. Y
pesaron como mi salario treinta piezas de plata. Entonces el Señor me dijo: “Échalo al alfarero”;
el precio majestuoso con que me tasaron. Entonces tomé las treinta piezas de plata y las arrojé al tesoro en la casa
del Señor.” Zacarías 11:12-13. La profecía sugiere un regateo sobre el precio, que la plata sería el instrumento monetario y que el costo sería precisamente de treinta piezas de plata. Jesús también predijo su traición.
“En verdad, en verdad les digo que uno de ustedes me va a entregar”. Los discípulos se miraron unos a otros, sin saber de quiénhablaba. Uno de sus discípulos, a quien Jesús amaba, estaba reclinado a la mesa al lado de Jesús, así que Simón Pedro le hizo señas para que le preguntara a Jesús de quién estaba hablando. Entonces ese discípulo, r ecostándose contra Jesús, le dijo: “Señor, ¿quién es?” Jesús respondió: “Es a quien le daré este bocado de pan mojado”. Entonces, después de mojar el bocado, se lo dio a Judas, el hijo de Simón Iscariote. Después de haber tomado el bocado, Satanás entró en él. Jesús le dijo: “Lo que vas a hacer, hazlo pronto”. Juan 13:13-27. Jesús había visto que Judas estaba aliado con Satanás meses antes de esto cuando dijo: “Jesús les respondió: “¿No os he escogido yo a vosotros, los doce? Y sin embargo, uno de vosotros es un diablo”. Se refería a Judas, hijo de Simón Iscariote, porque él, uno de los doce, lo iba a entregar”. Juan 6:70-71.
Los hechos reales registrados en los Evangelios dan un relato que se alinea completamente con las profecías de Zacarías y Jesús. “Entonces uno de los doce, que se llamaba Judas Iscariote, fue a los principales sacerdotes y les dijo: “¿Qué me queréis dar, y os lo entregaré?” Y ellos le pagaron treinta piezas de plata. Y desde ese momento
buscaba una oportunidad para entregarlo”. Mateo 26:14-16. “Cuando Judas, el que lo entregó, vio que
Jesús había sido condenado, cambió de parecer y devolvió las treinta piezas de plata a los principales sacerdotes y a los ancianos, diciendo: “Yo he pecado entregando sangre inocente”. Ellos dijeron: “¿Qué nos importa a nosotros? ¡Ve tú mismo!”. Y arrojando las piezas de plata al templo, salió, y fue y se ahorcó. Pero los principales sacerdotes, tomando las piezas de plata, dijeron: “No es lícito echarlas en el tesoro, porque es precio de sangre”. Entonces, después de consultar, compraron con ellas el campo del alfarero para sepultura de los extraños”. Mateo 27:3-7. Finalmente, Judas identificaría a Jesús ante las autoridades con un beso y Jesús sería llevado a prisión.
Me parece interesante que Judas fuera el tesorero y que estuviera robando dinero a los discípulos. Pablo nos dice
que “Pero los que quieren enriquecerse caen en tentación y lazo, y en muchas codicias necias y dañinas,
que hunden a los hombres en ruina y perdición. Porque raíz de todos los males es el amor al dinero, por el cual algunos se extraviaron de la fe y fueron traspasados de muchos dolores.” 1 Timoteo 6:9-10. Jesús también nos ha dicho “Nadie puede servir a dos señores, porque o aborrecerá a uno y amará al otro, o se apegará a uno y despreciará al otro. No se puede servir a Dios y al dinero.” Mateo 6:24. ¿Fue tan poderoso el amor de Judas al dinero que lo llevó a traicionar al Rey de Reyes? No lo sabemos con seguridad, pero ciertamente jugó un papel. Que Dios nos ayude a salir de esta tentación y que seamos hallados fieles.
