Weekly Message: From Christian Killer to Evangelist – The Apostle Paul

Last week we followed Peter as he healed the lame beggar and preached to the Sadducees and the crowd at the temple. We also looked at the unity that was characteristic of these early Christians and how they worked together to meet the needs of this new community. As the word of the Gospel spread, more and more people were stepping out in their belief that Jesus was the Messiah, and this began to draw more attention from the religious leaders.

As the responsibilities of administering the community increased, the disciples appointed others to take on various leadership roles. The criteria they used to choose these men included those with a good reputation, who were full of the Holy Spirit and those that demonstrated wisdom.  One of these men, Stephen, was said to be full of grace and power, and was doing great signs and wonders. This attracted the attention of leaders from several groups and disputes arose.  But these leaders could not match the wisdom of Stephen, so they made false accusations against him. These leaders convinced several men to accuse Stephen of blaspheme and he was seized and brought before the Sadducees.  As Peter before him, Stephen gave an inspired speech of reminding them of their heritage and then accusing them of murdering the Messiah.  This enrages the religious leaders, so they cast him out of the city and stone him.  As Jesus did before him, Stephen asks God to forgive these leaders for what they had done.

This execution of Stephen began a great persecution against the church.  At this time, Saul who would later be renamed Paul comes on the scene as the leader of this persecution. Saul would lead teams of soldiers to go house to house looking for believers, and drag them off to prison.  Saul was a Pharisee and lead the first significant wave of persecution against the early church. Paul was a staunch Jew and dedicated to God’s law and would stop at nothing to limit the spread of early Christianity. Paul literally went house to house to seek out Christians to have them imprisoned. He even went so far as to ask the High Priest for letters to the synagogues in Damascus to authorize Paul to capture any followers of Jesus and bring them tied up to Jerusalem. Why was Saul so fanatical? Saul was born and raised in Tarsus, a free city and as such, Saul was a Roman citizen. His early religious training came from the best Rabbinical school in Jerusalem lead by the Pharisee Gamaliel. Gamaliel was the grandson of Hillel, the most renowned rabbi in Jewish history and was an expert teacher of the law and held in great respect by all of the people. It is not surprising that with a mentor as prominent as Gamaliel, that Saul defended the Jewish law aggressively and saw Christianity as blasphemy.

What happens next is a transformation that only God could make happen. Saul, the chief Christian persecutor would become one of the most effective church planters and preachers of the gospel of all time. The 9th chapter of the book of Acts describes his miraculous transformation; “Now as he (Saul) went on his way, he approached Damascus, and suddenly a light from heaven shone around him. And falling to the ground, he heard a voice saying to him, “Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting me?” And he said, “Who are you, Lord?” And he said, “I am
Jesus, whom you are persecuting. But rise and enter the city, and you will be told what you are to do.” The men who were traveling with him stood speechless, hearing the voice but seeing no one. Saul rose from the ground, and although his eyes were opened, he saw nothing. So they led him by the hand and brought him into Damascus. And for three days he was without sight, and neither ate nor drank. Now there was a disciple at Damascus named Ananias. The Lord said to him in a vision, “Ananias.” And he said, “Here I am, Lord.” And the Lord said to him, “Rise and go to the street called Straight, and at the house of Judas look for a man of Tarsus named Saul, for behold, he is praying, and he has seen in a vision a man named Ananias come in and lay his hands on him so that he might regain his sight.” But Ananias answered, “Lord, I have heard from many about this man, how much evil he has done to your saints at Jerusalem. And here he has authority from the chief priests to bind all who call on your name.” But the Lord said to him, “Go, for he is a chosen instrument of mine to carry my name before the Gentiles and kings and the children of Israel. For I will show him how much he must suffer for the sake of my name.” So, Ananias departed and entered the house. And laying his hands on him he said, “Brother Saul, the Lord Jesus who appeared to you on the road by which you came has sent me so that you may regain your sight and be filled with the Holy Spirit.” And immediately something like scales fell from his eyes, and he regained his sight. Then he rose and was baptized; and taking food, he was strengthened.” Acts 9:10-19.

Paul would go on four missionary journeys over his lifetime starting more than 15 churches and traveling more than 10,000 miles. Paul performed miracles, would preach, and teach in the synagogues and would ultimately author 13 books of the bible. Paul lived an impactful life and was faithful in proclaiming the good news of the Gospel until his death around 68AD. After a fire in Rome that nearly burned the city to the ground, the emperor Nero blamed the Christians and had Paul beheaded. May we all consider Paul’s life and ministry and message to the world; “because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.” Romans 10:9.

Mensaje Semanal: De asesino de cristianos a evangelista: el apóstol Pablo

La semana pasada seguimos a Pedro mientras sanaba al mendigo cojo y predicaba a los saduceos ya la multitud en el templo. También analizamos la unidad que era característica de estos primeros cristianos y cómo trabajaron juntos para satisfacer las necesidades de esta nueva comunidad. A medida que se difundió la palabra del Evangelio, más y más personas se manifestaron en su creencia de que Jesús era el Mesías, y esto comenzó a atraer más la atención de los líderes religiosos.

A medida que aumentaban las responsabilidades de administrar la comunidad, los discípulos designaron a otros para que asumieran varios roles de liderazgo. Los criterios que usaron para elegir a estos hombres incluyeron a aquellos con buena reputación, que estaban llenos del Espíritu Santo y aquellos que demostraban sabiduría. Se decía que uno de estos hombres, Esteban, estaba lleno de gracia y de poder, y estaba haciendo grandes señales y prodigios. Esto atrajo la atención de líderes de varios grupos y surgieron disputas. Pero estos líderes no pudieron igualar la sabiduría de Esteban, por lo que hicieron acusaciones falsas en su contra. Estos líderes convencieron a varios hombres para que acusaran a Esteban de blasfemia y fue capturado y llevado ante los saduceos. Como Pedro antes que él, Esteban pronunció un discurso inspirado recordándoles su herencia y luego acusándolos de asesinar al Mesías. Esto enfurece a los líderes religiosos, por lo que lo expulsan de la ciudad y lo apedrean. Como hizo Jesús antes que él, Esteban le pide a Dios que perdone a estos líderes por lo que habían hecho.

Esta ejecución de Esteban inició una gran persecución contra la iglesia. En este momento, Saulo, que más tarde sería rebautizado como Pablo, entra en escena como líder de esta persecución. Saúl dirigía equipos de soldados para ir de casa en casa en busca de creyentes y los arrastraba a la cárcel. Saulo era fariseo y lideró la primera ola significativa de persecución contra la iglesia primitiva. Pablo era un judío acérrimo y dedicado a la ley de Dios y no se detendría ante nada para limitar la expansión del cristianismo primitivo. Pablo literalmente fue de casa en casa buscando cristianos para encarcelarlos. Incluso llegó a pedirle al Sumo Sacerdote cartas para las sinagogas de Damasco para autorizar a Pablo a capturar a los seguidores de Jesús y llevarlos atados a Jerusalén. ¿Por qué Saúl era tan fanático? Saulo nació y se crió en Tarso, una ciudad libre y como tal, Saulo era ciudadano romano. Su primera formación religiosa provino de la mejor escuela rabínica de Jerusalén dirigida por el fariseo Gamaliel. Gamaliel era nieto de Hillel, el rabino más renombrado en la historia judía y era un maestro experto en la ley y muy respetado por todo el pueblo. No sorprende que con un mentor tan prominente como Gamaliel, Saúl defendiera agresivamente la ley judía y viera al cristianismo como una blasfemia.

Lo que sucede a continuación es una transformación que solo Dios puede hacer que suceda. Saulo, el principal perseguidor cristiano, se convertiría en uno de los plantadores de iglesias y predicadores del evangelio más efectivos de todos los tiempos. El capítulo 9 del libro de los Hechos describe su transformación milagrosa; “Y yendo él (Saulo) por su camino, se acercó a Damasco, y de repente una luz del cielo brilló a su alrededor. Y cayendo en tierra, oyó una voz que le decía: Saulo, Saulo, ¿por qué me persigues? Y él dijo: ¿Quién eres, Señor? Y él dijo: “Yo soy Jesús, a quien tú persigues. Pero levántate y entra en la ciudad, y se te dirá lo que debes hacer. Los hombres que viajaban con él se quedaron mudos, escuchando la voz pero sin ver a nadie. Saulo se levantó del suelo, y aunque sus ojos estaban abiertos, no vio nada. Así que lo llevaron de la mano y lo llevaron a Damasco. Y estuvo tres días sin ver, y no comió ni bebió. Ahora bien, había un discípulo en Damasco llamado Ananías. El Señor le dijo en una visión: “Ananías”. Y él dijo: “Aquí estoy, Señor”. Y el Señor le dijo: Levántate y ve a la calle que se llama Derecha, y en la casa de Judas busca a un hombre de Tarso llamado Saulo, porque he aquí, él está orando, y ha visto en una visión a un hombre llamado Ananías. entra y ponle las manos encima para que recobre la vista. Pero Ananías respondió: “Señor, he oído de muchos acerca de este hombre, cuánto mal ha hecho a tus santos en Jerusalén. Y aquí tiene autoridad de los principales sacerdotes para prender a todos los que invocan tu nombre. Pero el Señor le dijo: “Ve, porque él es un instrumento escogido por mí para llevar mi nombre delante de los gentiles, de los reyes y de los hijos de Israel. Porque yo le mostraré cuánto debe sufrir por causa de mi nombre”. Entonces Ananías se fue y entró en la casa. Y poniendo sobre él las manos, dijo: Hermano Saulo, el Señor Jesús, que se te apareció en el camino por donde venías, me ha enviado para que recobres la vista y seas lleno del Espíritu Santo. Y al instante le cayeron de los ojos algo como escamas, y recobró la vista. Luego se levantó y fue bautizado; y tomando alimento, se fortalecía.” Hechos 9:10-19.

Paul realizaría cuatro viajes misioneros a lo largo de su vida, iniciando más de 15 iglesias y viajando más de 10,000 millas. Pablo realizó milagros, predicaría y enseñaría en las sinagogas y finalmente sería el autor de 13 libros de la Biblia. Pablo vivió una vida impactante y fue fiel en la proclamación de las buenas nuevas del Evangelio hasta su muerte alrededor del año 68 d.C. Después de un incendio en Roma que casi quemó la ciudad hasta los cimientos, el emperador Nerón culpó a los cristianos e hizo decapitar a Pablo. Que todos consideremos la vida, el ministerio y el mensaje de Pablo al mundo; “Porque si confiesas con tu boca que Jesús es el Señor, y crees en tu corazón que Dios le levantó de los muertos, serás salvo”. Romanos 10:9.
