Weekly Message: Christmas Spirit

What is Christmas Spirit? Most people would define the Christmas Spirit as having joy, a kind and loving attitude, being generous and giving to others. I remember when I was young, one of my favorite Christmas TV shows was A Charlie Brown Christmas. In the story, Christmas was approaching, and Charlie Brown found himself depressed rather than being excited for the holiday. Charlie goes to his mailbox and has no Christmas cards. He takes on directing a play, but his efforts are mocked and ignored. Charlie then volunteers to go get the Christmas tree and comes back with a tiny tree that is barely alive. This is met by his friends with criticism and pushes Charlie to the point where he says, “Isn’t there anyone who knows what Christmas is all about?” Then his small friend Linus steps forward and tells him that Christmas is about Jesus. The challenge for Charlie Brown is that he was looking to Christmas Cards, Christmas trees and other people to make him feel happy and put him in the Christmas Spirit, rather than looking to God. 

Why should we look to God when thinking about who we are and how we should feel at Christmas?  Does God expect us to stay in the Christmas spirit all the time? How do we maintain such a positive outlook on life when life can be so difficult?  In trying to answer all of these questions, the only place for us to start is by looking to Jesus.  God and man in one person.  A man who spent his life teaching us how to love God, love each other, and keep our priorities straight.  We can learn a lot by looking at the people who were around Jesus during his life and today we will look at a few to help us better understand the impact He can have on us.

So, let’s start at the beginning.  “When they saw the star, they rejoiced exceedingly with great joy.  And going into the house, they saw the child with Mary his mother, and they fell down and worshiped him. Then, opening their treasures, they offered him gifts, gold and frankincense and myrrh.” Matthew 2:10-11.  These wise men traveled for days to see the newborn Jesus.  How did they respond to Him?  They recognized that Jesus was God, worshiped Him, and gave valuable gifts to show their respect and gratitude.

Mary Magdalene was a Jewish woman from the fishing town of Magdala and is mentioned 12 times in the gospels of Mathew, Mark, Luke and John, more than any of the apostles.  The gospels of Mark and Luke record Mary being healed by Jesus as she was possessed by demons.  Mary devoted her life to learning from Jesus, and followed him all the way to his cross.  Mary was actually the first individual to see Jesus after His resurrection.  Mary was the first to tell the complete story of Jesus’ life, death and resurrection. When the angels told Mary to “go” in Mark 16:7, she became the first to feel the call and pull of Christ on her life to tell others of His resurrection.

Nicodemus was a prominent Pharisee, well-educated and a member of the             Jewish ruling counsel. One night Nicodemus came to Jesus and told him that he was amazed by his teachings and miracles.  Jesus told Nicodemus that one needed to be born of the Spirit to have a relationship with God.  It was Nicodemus who challenged the Jewish leaders that Jesus should be given a fair trial and was also the leader who worked with Joseph of Arimathea in identifying the place for Jesus to be buried.  Of all of the challenging relationships that Jesus had with the Jewish leaders, it was the discussion with Nicodemus that led to our understanding of what it means to be “born again” or “born of the spirit” and ultimately led to Nicodmus’ public support of Jesus with the other Jewish leaders.

Finally, we must also look at the 12 disciples of Jesus.  It can’t be said any better than what was written by Got Questions Ministries “The twelve disciples/apostles were ordinary men whom God used in an extraordinary manner. Among the twelve were fishermen, a tax collector, and a revolutionary. The Gospels record the constant failings, struggles, and doubts of these twelve men who followed Jesus Christ. After Jesus’ resurrection and ascension into heaven, the Holy Spirit transformed the disciples/apostles into powerful men of God who turned the world upside down.  What made the change? The twelve apostles/disciples had “been with Jesus.”

So, what should our reaction be to the King of Kings and the Lord of Lords (Jesus)? God, help us to make you our focus and to live each day with the Spirit you have taught us.

¿Qué es el espíritu navideño? La mayoría de la gente definiría el espíritu navideño como tener alegría, una actitud amable y amorosa, ser generoso y generoso con los demás. Recuerdo que cuando era joven, uno de mis programas de televisión navideños favoritos era A Charlie Brown Christmas. En la historia, se acercaba la Navidad y Charlie Brown se encontraba deprimido en lugar de emocionado por la festividad. Charlie va a su buzón y no tiene tarjetas de Navidad. Se encarga de dirigir una obra de teatro, pero sus esfuerzos son burlados e ignorados. Luego, Charlie se ofrece como voluntario para ir a buscar el árbol de Navidad y regresa con un árbol diminuto que apenas está vivo. Esto es recibido por sus amigos con críticas y lleva a Charlie al punto en que dice: “¿No hay nadie que sepa de qué se trata la Navidad?”. Entonces su pequeño amigo Linus da un paso adelante y le dice que la Navidad se trata de Jesús. El desafío para Charlie Brown es que buscaba tarjetas navideñas, árboles de Navidad y otras personas para hacerlo sentir feliz y ponerlo en el espíritu navideño, en lugar de mirar a Dios.

¿Por qué deberíamos mirar a Dios cuando pensamos en quiénes somos y cómo deberíamos sentirnos en Navidad? ¿Espera Dios que permanezcamos en el espíritu navideño todo el tiempo? ¿Cómo mantenemos una perspectiva tan positiva de la vida cuando la vida puede ser tan difícil? Al tratar de responder todas estas preguntas, el único lugar por el que podemos comenzar es mirando a Jesús. Dios y el hombre en una sola persona. Un hombre que pasó su vida enseñándonos cómo amar a Dios, amarnos unos a otros y mantener nuestras prioridades en orden. Podemos aprender mucho al observar a las personas que estuvieron alrededor de Jesús durante su vida y hoy veremos algunas para ayudarnos a comprender mejor el impacto que Él puede tener en nosotros.

Entonces, comencemos por el principio. “Cuando vieron la estrella, se regocijaron con gran alegría. Y entrando en la casa, vieron al niño con María su madre, y postrados lo adoraron. Luego, abriendo sus tesoros, le ofrecieron presentes: oro, incienso y mirra”. Mateo 2:10-11. Estos reyes magos viajaron durante días para ver a Jesús recién nacido. ¿Cómo le respondieron? Reconocieron que Jesús era Dios, lo adoraron y le dieron valiosos obsequios para mostrar su respeto y gratitud.

María Magdalena era una mujer judía del pueblo pesquero de Magdala y se menciona 12 veces en los evangelios de Mateo, Marcos, Lucas y Juan, más que cualquiera de los apóstoles. Los evangelios de Marcos y Lucas registran que María fue sanada por Jesús mientras estaba poseída por demonios. María dedicó su vida a aprender de Jesús y lo siguió hasta la cruz. En realidad, María fue la primera persona que vio a Jesús después de su resurrección. María fue la primera en contar la historia completa de la vida, muerte y resurrección de Jesús. Cuando los ángeles le dijeron a María que “vaya” en Marcos 16:7, ella se convirtió en la primera en sentir el llamado y la atracción de Cristo en su vida para contarles a otros sobre Su resurrección.

Nicodemo era un fariseo prominente, bien educado y miembro del consejo gobernante judío. Una noche Nicodemo se acercó a Jesús y le dijo que estaba asombrado por sus enseñanzas y milagros. Jesús le dijo a Nicodemo que uno necesitaba nacer del Espíritu para tener una relación con Dios. Fue Nicodemo quien desafió a los líderes judíos a que Jesús tuviera un juicio justo y también fue el líder que trabajó con José de Arimatea para identificar el lugar donde Jesús sería enterrado. De todas las relaciones desafiantes que Jesús tuvo con los líderes judíos, fue la discusión con Nicodemo la que nos llevó a comprender lo que significa “nacer de nuevo” o “nacer del espíritu” y, en última instancia, llevó al apoyo público de Nicodmo. de Jesús con los demás líderes judíos.

Finalmente, también debemos mirar a los 12 discípulos de Jesús. No se puede decir nada mejor que lo escrito por Got Question Ministries: “Los doce discípulos/apóstoles eran hombres comunes y corrientes a quienes Dios usó de una manera extraordinaria. Entre los doce se encontraban pescadores, un recaudador de impuestos y un revolucionario. Los Evangelios registran los constantes fracasos, luchas y dudas de estos doce hombres que siguieron a Jesucristo. Después de la resurrección y ascensión de Jesús al cielo, el Espíritu Santo transformó a los discípulos/apóstoles en hombres poderosos de Dios que pusieron el mundo patas arriba. ¿Qué hizo el cambio? Los doce apóstoles/discípulos habían “estado con Jesús”.

Entonces, ¿cuál debería ser nuestra reacción ante el Rey de Reyes y el Señor de Señores (Jesús)? Dios, ayúdanos a centrarnos en ti y a vivir cada día con el Espíritu que nos has enseñado.
