Weekly Message: The Book of Life

So, what is the Book of Life and why is it important? The term Book of Life appears 15 times in the bible. It is most prominently talked about in the book of Revelation as John describes what he sees at the Day of the Lord, when God judges those who have lived and determines where they will spend the rest of eternity. “ Then I saw a great white throne and him who was seated on it. From his presence earth and sky fled away, and no place was found for them. And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne, and books were opened. Then another book was opened, which is the book of life. And the dead were judged by what was written in the books, according to what they had done.” “And if anyone’s name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire.” Revelation 20:11-12,15. This passage talks about 2 different books, one that records the deeds of all people, and the Book of Life that records those who will inherit eternal life.

Our only earthly comparison to this picture is our current judicial system. When someone is accused of a crime, they come before a judge and jury who will determine their guilt or innocence, and if guilty, the judge will pronounce a sentence that the convicted must serve. In the case of the worst crimes, that sentence could be life in prison or potentially the death penalty. So what does the bible have to say about this final judgement, and how we can have our names written in the Lamb’s Book of Life?

Jesus speaking to his followers speaks of the coming judgement in Matthew Chapter 25.  “When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, then he will sit on his glorious throne. Before him will be gathered all the nations, and he will separate people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. And he will place the sheep on his right, but the goats on the left. Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world.” Matthew 25:31-34. “Then he will say to those on his left, ‘Depart from me, you cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels.” Matthew 25:41.

Both the Old and the New Testament speak of the fallen nature of man and that even our best falls short of God’s standards. “The fool says in his heart, there is no God. They are corrupt, doing abominable iniquity; there is none who does good. God looks down from heaven on the children of man to see if there are any who understand, who seek after God. They have all fallen away; together they have become corrupt; there is none who does good, not even one.” Psalm 53:1-3. “For by works of the law no human being will be justified in his sight, since through the law comes knowledge of sin.” “ for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” Romans 3:20,23. If we reach the end of our life and face the final judgment before God and expect our good deeds will earn our way into heaven, we will be found guilty and face the final penalty, eternity apart from God.

But God in his great mercy, has made a way for those who would call on the name of Jesus. “ but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Since, therefore, we have now been justified by his blood, much more shall we be saved by him from the wrath of God. For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, now that we are reconciled, shall we be saved by his life.” Romans 5:8-10. We can be confident that if we turn from our sins and place our faith and trust in Jesus Christ, then our name will be found in the Lamb’s Book of Life, and we have eternity in heaven with God to look forward to. God’s forgiveness is complete.  His forgiveness covers everything we have done or will do that violates God’s commandments.  At the moment we ask for forgiveness, our sin debt is fully paid by the death of Jesus on the cross.  Thank you, God, for loving us so much, that you made a way for us to be made holy and spend eternity with you though the sacrifice of your Son.

Entonces, ¿qué es el Libro de la Vida y por qué es importante? El término Libro de la Vida aparece 15 veces en la Biblia. Se habla de él de manera más prominente en el libro de Apocalipsis, cuando Juan describe lo que ve en el Día del Señor, cuando Dios juzga a quienes han vivido y determina dónde pasarán el resto de la eternidad. “Y vi un gran trono blanco y al que estaba sentado en él. De su presencia huyeron la tierra y el cielo, y ningún lugar se encontró para ellos. Y vi a los muertos, grandes y pequeños, de pie delante del trono; y los libros fueron abiertos, y luego otro libro fue abierto, el cual es el libro de la vida. Y fueron juzgados los muertos por lo que estaba escrito en los libros, según sus obras.” “Y el que no se halló inscrito en el libro de la vida fue arrojado al lago de fuego.” Apocalipsis 20:11-12,15. Este pasaje habla de dos libros diferentes, uno que registra las acciones de todas las personas y el Libro de la Vida que registra a quienes heredarán la vida eterna.

Nuestra única comparación terrenal con esta imagen es nuestro sistema judicial actual. Cuando alguien es acusado de un crimen, se presenta ante un juez y un jurado que determinarán su culpabilidad o inocencia, y si es culpable, el juez pronunciará una sentencia que el condenado debe cumplir. En el caso de los peores crímenes, esa sentencia podría ser cadena perpetua o potencialmente la pena de muerte. Entonces, ¿qué tiene que decir la Biblia sobre este juicio final y cómo podemos tener nuestros nombres escritos en el Libro de la Vida del Cordero?

Jesús hablando a sus seguidores habla del juicio venidero en Mateo capítulo 25: “Cuando el Hijo del Hombre venga en su gloria, y todos los ángeles con él, entonces se sentará en su trono glorioso. Delante de él se reunirán todas las naciones, y separará a los unos de los otros como separa el pastor las ovejas de los cabritos. Y pondrá las ovejas a su derecha, pero los cabritos a su izquierda. Entonces el Rey dirá a los de su derecha: “Venid, benditos de mi Padre, heredad el reino preparado para vosotros desde la fundación del mundo.” Mateo 25:31-34. “Luego dirá a los de su izquierda: “Apartaos de mí, malditos, al fuego eterno preparado para el diablo y sus ángeles.” Mateo 25:41.

Tanto el Antiguo como el Nuevo Testamento hablan de la naturaleza caída del hombre y de que incluso lo mejor que hacemos no alcanza los estándares de Dios. “Dice el necio en su corazón: No hay Dios. Son corruptos, hacen abominables iniquidades; no hay quien haga lo bueno. Dios mira desde los cielos sobre los hijos de los hombres para ver si hay alguien que entienda, que busque a Dios. Todos se han extraviado, a una se han corrompido; no hay quien haga lo bueno, no hay ni siquiera uno.” Salmo 53:1-3. “Porque por las obras de la ley ningún ser humano será justificado delante de él, ya que por medio de la ley es el conocimiento del pecado.” “por cuanto todos pecaron y están destituidos de la gloria de Dios” Romanos 3:20,23. Si llegamos al final de nuestra vida y enfrentamos el juicio final ante Dios y esperamos que nuestras buenas obras nos ganen el camino al cielo, seremos encontrados culpables y enfrentaremos la pena final, la eternidad separados de Dios.

Pero Dios en su gran misericordia, ha abierto un camino para aquellos que invocarían el nombre de Jesús. “Mas Dios muestra su amor para con nosotros, en que siendo aún pecadores, Cristo murió por nosotros. Así que, habiendo sido ahora justificados en su sangre, mucho más por él seremos salvos de la ira de Dios. Porque si siendo enemigos, fuimos reconciliados con Dios por la muerte de su Hijo, mucho más, estando reconciliados, seremos salvos por su vida.” Romanos 5:8-10. Podemos estar seguros de que si nos apartamos de nuestros pecados y ponemos nuestra fe y confianza en Jesucristo, nuestro nombre se encontrará en el Libro de la Vida del Cordero y tendremos la eternidad en el cielo con Dios. El perdón de Dios es completo. Su perdón cubre todo lo que hemos hecho o haremos que viole los mandamientos de Dios. En el momento en que pedimos perdón, nuestra deuda de pecado está totalmente pagada por la muerte de Jesús en la cruz. Gracias, Dios, por amarnos tanto, que abriste un camino para que seamos santificados y pasemos la eternidad contigo a través del sacrificio de tu Hijo.
