Weekly Message: Can We Trust The Bible?

We live in a world where it is getting increasingly difficult to know what the truth is. In a recent Gallop poll, 73% of Americans feel that there is bias in news reports and is a major problem. Those surveyed also didn’t believe in honest mistakes. When there were inaccuracies in news reports, 54% of Americans said they believed reporters intentionally misrepresented facts, while 28% said reporters were making things up.

That same skepticism carries over to how Americans feel about the bible. Only 24% believe that the Bible is the literal Word of God, down from 40% 30 years ago. Increasingly Americans view the Bible as a collection of fables and myths recorded by man with the most significant shift among young adults, indicating the trend is likely to accelerate in the years ahead. Why is that happening and is there anything the Church can do to change that trend?

I think at times we forget that four men wrote historical accounts of Jesus’ life: Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. These men were so impacted by the events they witnessed or by the time they spent with eyewitnesses, that they took the time to write down factual accounts of what they experienced. They were so convinced, these men were willing to die standing up for what they witnessed. I can only imagine what it must have been like to walk the earth with Jesus, observe his teachings, miracles, and ultimately his death and resurrection. Matthew and John were two of the original 12 disciples and were with Jesus for the entirety of His ministry. Mark was a follower of Jesus and a companion of Peter likely just a teenager during Jesus’ ministry. Luke, a doctor, was a follower of Paul and undertook research to talk with all the eyewitnesses and document what they had seen and experienced.

The bible as we know it today was assembled from the original manuscripts of these accounts around 400 A.D. The First Council of Constantinople decided a historical account should only be included in the Bible if it was:

• Written by one of Jesus’ disciples, someone who was a witness to Jesus’ ministry, such as Matthew, or someone who interviewed witnesses, such as Luke.
• Written in the first century A.D., meaning that books written long after the events of Jesus’ life and the first decades of the church weren’t included.
• Consistent with other portions of the Bible known to be valid, meaning the book couldn’t contradict a trusted elements of Scripture.

The Gospel of Luke is of special interest because it is the most complete of the 4 Gospels covering all of Jesus’ life. In the introduction to his account, Luke writes “Inasmuch as many have undertaken to compile a narrative of the things that have been accomplished among us, just as those who from the beginning were eyewitnesses
and ministers of the word have delivered them to us, it seemed good to me also, having followed all things closely for some time past, to write an orderly account for you, most excellent Theophilus, that you may have certainty concerning the things you have been taught.” Luke 1:1-4.

Many I talk to who don’t believe in Jesus have never researched the authenticity of the gospel accounts or looked into whether they might actually be true. Archeologists have discovered physical evidence that support elements of the gospel accounts. The fact that Jesus lived, was a Jew, with followers, was executed on orders of the Roman governor of Judea, Pontius Pilate, during the reign of the Emperor Tiberius—are validated by later sources that were completely outside of the circle of Jesus followers. The New Testament bible was meticulously assembled so that we can rely on the gospel accounts. So, what are the implications of not looking into the possibility that Jesus is the Son of God? If these accounts are true, then we will miss out on the opportunity of becoming the children of God. We are relegated to being guilty before God and to spend eternity separated from Him.

God is not afraid of your tough questions. Don’t miss out on an eternity with your Father without taking the time to decide for yourself whether Jesus is real and is who he said he was, the Son of God.

Vivimos en un mundo en el que cada vez resulta más difícil saber cuál es la verdad. En una encuesta reciente de Gallop, el 73% de los estadounidenses cree que los informes de noticias tienen sesgos y que es un problema importante. Los encuestados tampoco creen en los errores honestos. Cuando se encontraron imprecisiones en los informes de noticias, el 54% de los estadounidenses dijo que creía que los periodistas tergiversaban los hechos intencionalmente, mientras que el 28% dijo que los periodistas estaban inventando cosas.

Ese mismo escepticismo se traslada a la forma en que los estadounidenses sienten acerca de la Biblia. Solo el 24% cree que la Biblia es la Palabra literal de Dios, en comparación con el 40% hace 30 años. Cada vez más, los estadounidenses ven la Biblia como una colección de fábulas y mitos registrados por el hombre, y el cambio más significativo se da entre los adultos jóvenes, lo que indica que es probable que la tendencia se acelere en los próximos años. ¿Por qué sucede eso y hay algo que la Iglesia pueda hacer para cambiar esa tendencia?

Creo que a veces olvidamos que cuatro hombres escribieron relatos históricos de la vida de Jesús: Mateo, Marcos, Lucas y Juan. Estos hombres quedaron tan impactados por los acontecimientos que presenciaron o por el tiempo que pasaron con testigos oculares, que se tomaron el tiempo de escribir relatos fácticos de lo que experimentaron. Estaban tan convencidos, que estos hombres estaban dispuestos a morir defendiendo lo que presenciaron. Solo puedo imaginar cómo debe haber sido caminar por la tierra con Jesús, observar sus enseñanzas, milagros y, en última instancia, su muerte y resurrección. Mateo y Juan fueron dos de los 12 discípulos originales y estuvieron con Jesús durante todo su ministerio. Marcos fue un seguidor de Jesús y compañero de Pedro, probablemente un adolescente durante el ministerio de Jesús. Lucas, un médico, fue un seguidor de Pablo y emprendió una investigación para hablar con todos los testigos oculares y documentar lo que habían visto y experimentado.

La Biblia tal como la conocemos hoy en día se compiló a partir de los manuscritos originales de estos relatos alrededor del año 400 d. C. El Primer Concilio de Constantinopla decidió que un relato histórico solo debía incluirse en la Biblia si:

• Había sido escrito por uno de los discípulos de Jesús, alguien que fue testigo del ministerio de Jesús, como Mateo, o alguien que entrevistó a testigos, como Lucas.
• Había sido escrito en el primer siglo d. C., lo que significa que no se incluyeron los libros escritos mucho después de los acontecimientos de la vida de Jesús y las primeras décadas de la iglesia.
• Era coherente con otras partes de la Biblia que se sabía que eran válidas, lo que significa que el libro no podía contradecir elementos confiables de las Escrituras.

El Evangelio de Lucas es de especial interés porque es el más completo de los cuatro Evangelios y cubre toda la vida de Jesús. En la introducción de su relato, Lucas escribe: “Puesto que muchos han tratado de poner en orden la historia de las cosas que entre nosotros han sido ciertísimas, tal como nos las enseñaron los que desde el principio las vieron con sus ojos y fueron ministros de la palabra, a mí también me ha parecido bien, después de haber investigado con diligencia todas las cosas desde el principio, escribírtelas por orden, oh excelentísimo Teófilo, para que conozcas bien las cosas en las cuales has sido instruido” (Lucas 1:1-4).

Muchas personas con las que hablo que no creen en Jesús nunca han investigado la autenticidad de los relatos de los evangelios ni han investigado si podrían ser ciertos. Los arqueólogos han descubierto evidencia física que respalda elementos de los relatos de los evangelios. El hecho de que Jesús vivió, fue judío, tuvo seguidores y fue ejecutado por orden del gobernador romano de Judea, Poncio Pilato, durante el reinado del emperador Tiberio, está validado por fuentes posteriores que estaban completamente fuera del círculo de seguidores de Jesús. La Biblia del Nuevo Testamento fue compilada meticulosamente para que podamos confiar en los relatos de los evangelios. Entonces, ¿cuáles son las implicaciones de no considerar la posibilidad de que Jesús sea el Hijo de Dios? Si estos relatos son ciertos, perderemos la oportunidad de convertirnos en hijos de Dios. Estaremos relegados a ser culpables ante Dios y a pasar la eternidad separados de Él.

Dios no tiene miedo de tus preguntas difíciles. No pierdas la eternidad con tu Padre sin tomarte el tiempo para decidir por ti mismo si Jesús es real y es quien dijo ser, el Hijo de Dios.
