Weekly Message: Sanctification

One of the core elements of the Christian faith is the Old and New Testament Bible.  Jewish and Christian believers have spent much time reading and understanding the scriptures to know and understand God’s plan for the human race, and to better understand who God is and what He expects.  Most bible historians would identify that there were around 40 authors who were inspired by God to write the bible in languages other than English.  These original versions have been translated by different individuals using various techniques and that is why we have so many types of the bibles like King James, English Standard, and New American Standard.  Despite the different translations, there are many important elements all of them cover that help us better understand who God is and what is important to Him.  The bible is important to us as it is only through reading it and spending time in prayer, that we can get to know our creator. God’s word helps us to understand his expectations, what is right and wrong and exposes our sin.. Finally, it is the primary tool for our training in righteousness. “All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness” 2 Timothy 3:16. Today we are going to take a closer look at the concept of Sanctification, which is defined as the process of removing sin from our life and becoming holy or without sin.  There are many reasons why this is such an important aspect of the Christian life. God is perfectly Holy and we are not.  Although we have been forgiven of our sins, we continue to be challenged by them. 

So, what is this process of sanctification? When we repent (turn from our sins), and place our faith in Jesus, we are 100% forgiven from everything we have done or will do. “If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” 1 John 1:8-9. So does this mean that we are completely righteous and will not sin again in the future. Unfortunately, the answer to that is no. As much as we would like to live a perfect life, as long as we live it will not be possible. Here is what the Apostle Paul said about himself: “For I know that nothing good dwells in me, that is, in my flesh. For I have the desire to do what is right, but not the ability to carry it out. For I do not do the good I want, but the evil I do not want is what I keep on doing.” Romans 7:18-19 If we are forgiven for everything we will do, then why do we need this training in righteousness?

God has destined us to become more and more like Jesus so that we can spend eternity with a holy and perfect God, and only God can do this. Romans 8:28-30 says “And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose. For those whom he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, in order that he might be the firstborn among many brothers. And those whom he predestined he also called, and those whom he called he also justified, and those whom he justified he also glorified.” Once we have repented and believe, we begin a lifelong process of becoming more and more like Christ, able to reject the temptation of sin and demonstrate the kind of character that Jesus has. This process is the process of sanctification. As a believer, we should be living a life where every day we are changing our thinking and changing our behavior. The life of a believer should be marked by a process that exposes and eliminates sins, and one that increasingly shows the nature of the holy spirit.

The Bible and the Holy Spirit are the keys to this process of sanctification. Romans 12:2 says “Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.” Knowledge and the study of God’s word with the aid of the Holy Spirit allows our minds to be “renewed and transformed.” It is this process of sanctification that enables us to be more and more like Christ. As we seek to become more like Jesus, knowledge of God’s word and the Holy Spirit will help us to see those areas in life we need to change.  Some of these changes will be difficult, and it is only though our efforts, combined with the assistance of the Holy Spirit, that we can be successful. Thessalonians 5:23 says “Now may the God of peace himself sanctify you completely, and may your whole spirit and soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.” I am so grateful that God, in his infinite wisdom gave us his Word and the Holy Spirit to help us in this transformation. Our part is to make spending time in his Word, doing the things that bring glory to God, and staying away from those things that the bible and the Holy Spirit shows us as sinful. As we work on this process, may we all approach God and ask Him to show us those things that need to change and welcome the influence of the Holy Spirit into our lives, so that we can be more like Jesus.

Uno de los elementos centrales de la fe cristiana es la Biblia del Antiguo y Nuevo Testamento. Los creyentes judíos y cristianos han dedicado mucho tiempo a leer y comprender las Escrituras para conocer y comprender el plan de Dios para la raza humana y comprender mejor quién es Dios y qué espera. La mayoría de los historiadores de la Biblia identificarían que hubo alrededor de 40 autores que fueron inspirados por Dios para escribir la Biblia en otros idiomas además del inglés. Estas versiones originales han sido traducidas por diferentes personas utilizando diversas técnicas y es por eso que tenemos tantos tipos de Biblias como King James, English Standard y New American Standard. A pesar de las diferentes traducciones, hay muchos elementos importantes que todas cubren y que nos ayudan a comprender mejor quién es Dios y qué es importante para Él. La Biblia es importante para nosotros ya que sólo leyéndola y pasando tiempo en oración podemos conocer a nuestro creador. La palabra de Dios nos ayuda a comprender sus expectativas, lo que está bien y lo que está mal y expone nuestro pecado. Finalmente, es la herramienta principal para nuestro entrenamiento en justicia. “Toda Escritura es inspirada por Dios y útil para enseñar, para redargüir, para corregir y para instruir en justicia” 2 Timoteo 3:16. Hoy vamos a analizar más de cerca el concepto de Santificación, que se define como el proceso de eliminar el pecado de nuestra vida y volvernos santos o sin pecado. Hay muchas razones por las que este es un aspecto tan importante de la vida cristiana. Dios es perfectamente Santo y nosotros no. Aunque hemos sido perdonados de nuestros pecados, seguimos siendo desafiados por ellos.

Entonces, ¿qué es este proceso de santificación? Cuando nos arrepentimos (nos alejamos de nuestros pecados) y ponemos nuestra fe en Jesús, somos 100% perdonados de todo lo que hemos hecho o haremos. “Si decimos que no tenemos pecado, nos engañamos a nosotros mismos y la verdad no está en nosotros. Si confesamos nuestros pecados, él es fiel y justo para perdonarnos nuestros pecados y limpiarnos de toda maldad”. 1 Juan 1:8-9. Entonces, ¿significa esto que somos completamente justos y no volveremos a pecar en el futuro? Desafortunadamente, la respuesta es no. Por mucho que nos gustaría vivir una vida perfecta, mientras la vivamos no será posible. Esto es lo que el apóstol Pablo dijo acerca de sí mismo: “Porque sé que nada bueno habita en mí, es decir, en mi carne. Porque tengo el deseo de hacer lo correcto, pero no la capacidad de realizarlo. Porque no hago el bien que quiero, sino el mal que no quiero, es lo que sigo haciendo”. Romanos 7:18-19 Si somos perdonados por todo lo que hagamos, entonces ¿por qué necesitamos este entrenamiento en justicia?

Dios nos ha destinado a ser cada vez más como Jesús para que podamos pasar la eternidad con un Dios santo y perfecto, y sólo Dios puede hacer esto. Romanos 8:28-30 dice “Y sabemos que a los que aman a Dios, todas las cosas les ayudan a bien, es decir, a los que conforme a su propósito son llamados. Porque a los que antes conoció, también los predestinó a ser conformes a la imagen de su Hijo, para que él sea el primogénito entre muchos hermanos. Y a los que predestinó, también llamó, y a los que llamó, también justificó, y a los que justificó, también glorificó”. Una vez que nos hemos arrepentido y creemos, comenzamos un proceso de por vida para llegar a ser cada vez más como Cristo, capaces de rechazar la tentación del pecado y demostrar el tipo de carácter que tiene Jesús. Este proceso es el proceso de santificación. Como creyente, deberíamos vivir una vida en la que cada día cambiemos nuestra forma de pensar y cambiar nuestro comportamiento. La vida de un creyente debe estar marcada por un proceso que exponga y elimine los pecados, y que muestre cada vez más la naturaleza del espíritu santo.

La Biblia y el Espíritu Santo son las claves de este proceso de santificación. Romanos 12:2 dice: “No os conforméis a este mundo, sino transformaos mediante la renovación de vuestra mente, para que, probando, podáis discernir cuál es la voluntad de Dios, lo que es bueno, agradable y perfecto”. El conocimiento y el estudio de la palabra de Dios con la ayuda del Espíritu Santo permiten que nuestra mente sea “renovada y transformada”. Es este proceso de santificación el que nos permite ser cada vez más como Cristo. A medida que buscamos parecernos más a Jesús, el conocimiento de la palabra de Dios y del Espíritu Santo nos ayudará a ver aquellas áreas de la vida que necesitamos cambiar. Algunos de estos cambios serán difíciles, y sólo mediante nuestros esfuerzos, combinados con la asistencia del Espíritu Santo, podremos tener éxito. Tesalonicenses 5:23 dice: “Y el mismo Dios de paz os santifique por completo, y todo vuestro espíritu, alma y cuerpo, sea guardado irreprensible para la venida de nuestro Señor Jesucristo”. Estoy muy agradecida de que Dios, en su infinita sabiduría, nos dio su Palabra y el Espíritu Santo para ayudarnos en esta transformación. Nuestra parte es dedicar tiempo a su Palabra, hacer las cosas que traen gloria a Dios y alejarnos de aquellas cosas que la Biblia y el Espíritu Santo nos muestran como pecaminosas. Mientras trabajamos en este proceso, que todos nos acerquemos a Dios y le pidamos que nos muestre aquellas cosas que necesitan cambiar y recibamos la influencia del Espíritu Santo en nuestras vidas, para que podamos ser más como Jesús.
