Weekly Message: The Cost of Freedom

This week we celebrate those that have given their lives in defense of our country and for the freedom we have living in the United States.  Decoration Day, now known as Memorial Day, was first celebrated after the Civil War and was identified as a national holiday in 1966.  Americans celebrate this holiday by visiting cemeteries & memorials as well as throwing parties and barbeques as this time also marks the beginning of summer.  We live in a country that was founded with the idea that “All are men (and women) are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.” 

President Kennedy was faced with a tremendous threat to the security of the United States back in October of 1962.  The Soviet army began stockpiling offensive weapons on the island of Cuba presenting a significant threat to the United States.  He concluded a speech to the nation with the following summary. “The path we have chosen for the present is full of hazards, as all paths are–but it is the one most consistent with our character and courage as a nation and our commitments around the world. The cost of freedom is always high–but Americans have always paid it. And one path we shall never choose, and that is the path of surrender or submission.

Our goal is not the victory of might, but the vindication of right–not peace at the expense of freedom, but both peace and freedom, here in this hemisphere, and, we hope, around the world. God willing, that goal will be achieved.”  President Kennedy was advocating for both peace and freedom, just like the authors of the Declaration of Independence.  The cost of freedom is high, and it requires all of us to lead and act in the best interests of many, rather than just one.

Memorial Day is a great chance for us to take time to celebrate and remember the sacrifice of others.  As we value the privilege to live in a free country, one of the awesome opportunities we have is the freedom to choose who we worship.  As our soldiers gave their lives to defend our free country, our savior Jesus gave his life as full payment for our sins and through His sacrifice, we are forgiven and will spend eternity with God.  The cost of our freedom from death was not small. As we remember Jesus and what He did for us, it is important for us to understand that He is God. “Long ago, at many times and in many ways, God spoke to our fathers by the prophets, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed the heir of all things, through whom also he created the world. He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature, and he upholds the universe by the word of his power. After making purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high, having become as much superior to angels as the name he has inherited is more excellent than theirs.” Hebrews 1:1-4.

Sometimes it is hard for us to understand how far we are from being righteous.  We can compare ourselves to others and think “I am not so bad; God will accept me.” The challenge we face is that God is perfect in every way, and we can’t be in his presence if we are guilty of any sin, even something simple. “Now the works of the flesh are evident: sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality, idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, rivalries, dissensions, divisions, envy, drunkenness, orgies, and things like these.” Galatians 5:19. Even something as simple as a white lie is enough to exclude us from heaven and eternity with God. But Jesus came to give his life, as full payment so we could be forgiven.   ^“Who shall bring any charge against God’s elect? It is God who justifies. Who is to condemn? Christ Jesus is the one who died—more than that, who was raised—who is at the right hand of God, who indeed is interceding for us.” Romans 8:33-34.

Through faith in Jesus, God will forgive any sin that we have committed if we believe in Jesus and ask for forgiveness.If you are not sure about your faith and would like to talk to someone, seek me out on a Tuesday or give us a call at the number below.

Esta semana celebramos a aquellos que han dado su vida en defensa de nuestro país y por la libertad que tenemos viviendo en los Estados Unidos.   El Día de la Decoración, ahora conocido como Día de los Caídos, se celebró por primera vez después de la Guerra Civil y se identificó como feriado nacional en 1966. Los estadounidenses celebran esta festividad visitando cementerios y monumentos conmemorativos, así como organizando fiestas y barbacoas, ya que esta época también marca el comienzo de verano.   Vivimos en un país que fue fundado con la idea de que “Todos los hombres (y mujeres) son creados iguales, que están dotados por su Creador de ciertos Derechos inalienables, que entre ellos están la Vida, la Libertad y la búsqueda de la Felicidad”. 

El presidente Kennedy se enfrentó a una tremenda amenaza a la seguridad de los Estados Unidos en octubre de 1962. El ejército soviético comenzó a almacenar armas ofensivas en la isla de Cuba, lo que representaba una amenaza importante para los Estados Unidos.   Concluyó un discurso a la nación con el siguiente resumen. “El camino que hemos elegido para el presente está lleno de peligros, como todos los caminos, pero es el más consistente con nuestro carácter y coraje como nación y nuestros compromisos en todo el mundo. El costo de la libertad siempre es alto, pero los estadounidenses siempre lo han pagado. Y hay un camino que nunca elegiremos, y ese es el camino de la rendición o la sumisión.

Nuestro objetivo no es la victoria del poder, sino la reivindicación del derecho; no la paz a expensas de la libertad, sino la paz y la libertad, aquí en este hemisferio y, esperamos, en todo el mundo. Si Dios quiere, ese objetivo se logrará”.   El presidente Kennedy defendía tanto la paz como la libertad, al igual que los autores de la Declaración de Independencia.   El costo de la libertad es alto y requiere que todos lideremos y actuemos en beneficio de muchos, y no solo de uno.

El Día de los Caídos es una gran oportunidad para que nos tomemos el tiempo para celebrar y recordar el sacrificio de los demás.   Mientras valoramos el privilegio de vivir en un país libre, una de las increíbles oportunidades que tenemos es la libertad de elegir a quién adoramos.   Así como nuestros soldados dieron sus vidas para defender nuestro país libre, nuestro salvador Jesús dio su vida como pago total por nuestros pecados y a través de Su sacrificio, somos perdonados y pasaremos la eternidad con Dios.   El costo de nuestra liberación de la muerte no fue pequeño. Al recordar a Jesús y lo que hizo por nosotros, es importante que comprendamos que Él es Dios. “Hace mucho tiempo, muchas veces y de muchas maneras, Dios habló a nuestros padres por los profetas, pero en estos postreros días nos ha hablado por su Hijo, a quien constituyó heredero de todo, por quien también creó el mundo. Él es el resplandor de la gloria de Dios y la huella exacta de su naturaleza, y sostiene el universo con la palabra de su poder. Después de haber hecho la purificación de los pecados, se sentó a la diestra de la Majestad en las alturas, siendo tan superior a los ángeles cuanto más excelente es el nombre que ha heredado que el de ellos”. Hebreos 1:1-4.

A veces nos resulta difícil comprender lo lejos que estamos de ser justos.   Podemos compararnos con los demás y pensar “no soy tan malo; Dios me aceptará”. El desafío que enfrentamos es que Dios es perfecto en todos los sentidos y no podemos estar en su presencia si somos culpables de algún pecado, incluso de algo simple. “Ahora bien, las obras de la carne son evidentes: fornicación, impureza, sensualidad, idolatría, hechicerías, enemistades, contiendas, celos, iras, rivalidades, disensiones, divisiones, envidias, borracheras, orgías y cosas semejantes a estas”. Gálatas 5:19. Incluso algo tan simple como una mentira piadosa es suficiente para excluirnos del cielo y de la eternidad con Dios. Pero Jesús vino a dar su vida, como pago total para que pudiéramos ser perdonados.    “¿Quién presentará cargos contra los elegidos de Dios? Es Dios quien justifica. ¿Quién debe condenar? Cristo Jesús es el que murió, es más, el que resucitó, el que está a la diestra de Dios, el que verdaderamente intercede por nosotros”. Romanos 8:33-34.

A través de la fe en Jesús, Dios perdonará cualquier pecado que hayamos cometido si creemos en Jesús y pedimos perdón. Si no estás seguro de tu fe y te gustaría hablar con alguien, búscame un martes o danos una llame al número que aparece a continuación.
