Weekly Message: Integrity

We live in a world that seems to change a lot every day.  Recently I was reading through some articles on what several journalists believe will be the most impactful changes to our world over the next decade.  Some of the more notable changes that are predicted include the increase average age of the population and their medical & physical needs, the trajectory of our governments both democratic and not, the diminishing supply of natural resources like food and fuel, and the difficulties with selecting sound political leadership.  There is no doubt that selecting good leadership is critical to the effectiveness of our country, our businesses, and other important organizations.  When we look to those that lead us, what are the most important factors we should consider? Although many qualities are important, I think one of the most important attributes in a person’s character is integrity.  So, what is integrity and how can we assess it in the people that are around us? 

Assessing someone’s integrity requires us to observe behavior over time to understand what is the nature that is driving someone’s speech and behavior.  It is easy for any of us to say the right thing, but much harder for us to remain consistent in thought and action.  A person who shows integrity is someone who behaves honorably, even when no one is watching. Someone with integrity follows moral and ethical principles in all aspects of their life, including their profession.  Integrity extends into all relationships whether family or in business. An individual with integrity can be trusted to do what they commit to and follow through on what they have started.

Jesus gave us a perfect example of what integrity looks like.  “Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. And after fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry. And the tempter came and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, command these stones to become loaves of bread.” But he answered, “It is written, “‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.’”  Then the devil took him to the holy city and set him on the pinnacle of the temple and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down, for it is written, “‘He will command his angels concerning you,’ and “‘On their hands they will bear you up, lest you strike your foot against a stone.’”  Jesus said to him, “Again it is written, ‘You shall not put the Lord your God to the test.’” Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory. And he said to him, “All these I will give you, if you will fall down and worship me.” Then Jesus said to him, “Be gone, Satan! For it is written, “‘You shall worship the Lord your God and him only shall you serve.’”  Then the devil left him, and behold, angels came and were ministering to him.” Matthew 4:1-11.  It did not matter what the devil offered Jesus. Jesus remained faithful to carry out God’s plan for his life, so that those who believe in Him would have eternal life and a home in heaven.

Have you ever worked for a leader with integrity or one that lacked integrity?  What was that like?  I have worked for many leaders over time, and I can honestly say that integrity matters a lot.  One leader I worked for did not care for the people around him and only focused on what it would take to make more money.  People did not matter to this person and you knew that by the way he spoke and acted.  On the other side, I worked for an individual who cared about others and showed that by the way he treated them. Despite his high standards, he would work with others to help them get better at what they did.  He honored loyalty, trust and keeping his word.  He was a man who acted with integrity.

Talking about good character and living it fully are two different things.  So how can we live life with integrity given the pressure that is all around us driving decisions that are just better for me?  It starts with seeking guidance from God.  The closer our relationship is with God, the more likely we will behave in an honorable way.  Prayer and studying the bible is an excellent tactic to fill our heart and mind with what God would do.  Setting the stage for honesty and integrity in our communication with others is a great start, and then through prayer and guidance from God, we can make choices that honor Him and other people.

Vivimos en un mundo que parece cambiar mucho cada día. Recientemente estuve leyendo algunos artículos sobre lo que varios periodistas creen que serán los cambios más impactantes en nuestro mundo durante la próxima década. Algunos de los cambios más notables que se predicen incluyen el aumento de la edad promedio de la población y sus necesidades médicas y físicas, la trayectoria de nuestros gobiernos, tanto democráticos como no, la disminución del suministro de recursos naturales como alimentos y combustible, y las dificultades para seleccionar liderazgo político sólido. No hay duda de que seleccionar un buen liderazgo es fundamental para la eficacia de nuestro país, nuestras empresas y otras organizaciones importantes. Cuando miramos a aquellos que nos guían, ¿cuáles son los factores más importantes que debemos considerar? Aunque muchas cualidades son importantes, creo que uno de los atributos más importantes del carácter de una persona es la integridad. Entonces, ¿qué es la integridad y cómo podemos evaluarla en las personas que nos rodean?

Evaluar la integridad de alguien requiere que observemos el comportamiento a lo largo del tiempo para comprender cuál es la naturaleza que impulsa el habla y el comportamiento de alguien. Es fácil para cualquiera de nosotros decir lo correcto, pero es mucho más difícil para nosotros mantener la coherencia en el pensamiento y la acción. Una persona que muestra integridad es alguien que se comporta honorablemente, incluso cuando nadie está mirando. Alguien con integridad sigue principios morales y éticos en todos los aspectos de su vida, incluida su profesión. La integridad se extiende a todas las relaciones, ya sean familiares o comerciales. Se puede confiar en que una persona con integridad hará lo que se ha comprometido y seguirá adelante con lo que ha comenzado.

Jesús nos dio un ejemplo perfecto de cómo es la integridad. “Entonces Jesús fue llevado por el Espíritu al desierto para ser tentado por el diablo. Y después de ayunar cuarenta días y cuarenta noches, tuvo hambre. Y acercándose el tentador, le dijo: Si eres Hijo de Dios, di a estas piedras que se conviertan en panes. Pero él respondió: “Escrito está: “No sólo de pan vivirá el hombre, sino de toda palabra que sale de la boca de Dios”. Entonces el diablo lo llevó a la ciudad santa y lo puso en el pináculo del templo y le dijo: Si eres Hijo de Dios, tírate abajo, porque escrito está: “A sus ángeles mandará acerca de ti”, y “En sus manos te llevarán, para que no te golpees”. tu pie contra una piedra.’” Jesús le dijo: “Otra vez escrito está: ‘No tentarás al Señor tu Dios’”. Nuevamente, el diablo lo llevó a un monte muy alto y le mostró todos los reinos del mundo y su gloria. Y él le dijo: Todo esto te daré, si postrado me adorares. Entonces Jesús le dijo: “¡Vete, Satanás! Porque está escrito: “Al Señor tu Dios adorarás y a él sólo servirás”. Entonces el diablo lo dejó, y he aquí, vinieron ángeles y le servían. Mateo 4:1-11. No importaba lo que el diablo le ofreciera a Jesús. Jesús permaneció fiel para llevar a cabo el plan de Dios para su vida, para que quienes creen en Él tengan vida eterna y un hogar en el cielo.

¿Alguna vez ha trabajado para un líder con integridad o uno que carecía de integridad? ¿Como fue eso? He trabajado para muchos líderes a lo largo del tiempo y puedo decir honestamente que la integridad es muy importante. Un líder para el que trabajé no se preocupaba por las personas que lo rodeaban y solo se concentraba en lo que se necesitaría para ganar más dinero. A esta persona la gente no le importaba y lo sabías por la forma en que hablaba y actuaba. Por otro lado, trabajé para una persona que se preocupaba por los demás y lo demostraba en la forma en que los trataba. A pesar de sus altos estándares, trabajaría con otros para ayudarlos a mejorar en lo que hacían. Honró la lealtad, la confianza y el cumplimiento de su palabra. Era un hombre que actuó con integridad.

Hablar del buen carácter y vivirlo plenamente son dos cosas distintas. Entonces, ¿cómo podemos vivir la vida con integridad dada la presión que nos rodea para tomar decisiones que son mejores para mí? Comienza buscando la guía de Dios. Cuanto más estrecha sea nuestra relación con Dios, más probabilidades tendremos de comportarnos de manera honorable. La oración y el estudio de la biblia es una excelente táctica para llenar nuestro corazón y mente con lo que Dios haría. Preparar el escenario para la honestidad y la integridad en nuestra comunicación con los demás es un gran comienzo, y luego, a través de la oración y la guía de Dios, podemos tomar decisiones que lo honren a Él y a otras personas.
